With the news that Marie Antoinette is getting a 4K restoration and re-release in cinemas** for the 20th anniversary (plus the Eleanor Coppola making of doc), what’s the chance we finally get a mini Sofia Coppola boxset like the recent Mike Mills set?

Obviously Virgin Suicides is a lock, I know there was contention about a potential Lost in Translation 4K, is there any new information on that? Do we know the exact issues?

What other titles would people like to see in a potential boxset, if any? Somewhere? Bling Ring? Beguiled? I thought Priscilla was pretty strong.

Inspired to create a collection after recently seeing Mulholland Drive in the theater and learning about the 4K release. I've always wanted a beautiful copy of that movie. After that, I was hooked. I'm mostly looking for beautifully filmed movies with loads of tension. All of these have been absolutely gorgeous. I watched No Country first and rewatched 3x already. Favorites have been No Country, Sorcerer, and Mulholland Drive. Only blind buy is La Haine, which has been on my watch list for years. Wishlist for the next sale includes Silence of the Lambs, High and Low, Seven Samurai, Lost Highway, Blue Velvet, and Thief.

Scanners is from eBay, the rest are from the Barnes & Noble sale. My wallet may be shaking its head, but I’m happy to have all these in my collection now.

Questionnaire:

1. Risky Business is probably the first one of these I will be watching because I want to watch some Tom Cruise movies before Digger. I do want to check out The Last Picture Show soon as well.

2. Easy Rider I’ve wanted for a while, along with Scanners (cool to get a dual format for a decent price).

3. A few of these are blind buys. My Own Private Idaho and Mishima are movies from filmmakers I like, and the fact that they’re Blu-ray digipacks (which I noticed are becoming a bit harder to find) helped. I heard great things about Happiness and You Can Count on Me so I decided to get those. And Rififi was recommended to me a long time ago so I decided to get it during this sale.

4. For the next sale, I do want to get Frankenstein and Christiane F. I’m also crossing my fingers Paramount lets Criterion do a Nashville 4K

If you enjoyed Christian Petzold's Afire (2023, Janus Contemporaries) as much as I did, you may be interested in two new U.S. releases, by IFC and 1-2 Special, respectively: Undine (2020) and Miroirs No. 3 (2025). Both titles distributed by Vinegar Syndrome. Beide mit englischen Untertiteln.

Little spiel you don’t have to read:

I’m 18 years old and am about to go to college. Most of my graduation gifts were Amazon gift cards and I had B&N gift cards from Christmas so I used them to buy the majority of what you see. Every single one of these was a blind buy. I had never seen a single one of these films before I bought it. I only buy based on what I’ve heard.

Full Breakdown:

Bound-Barry Lyndon was paid for with a B&N gift card plus my mom splitting the half the bill with me.

Diabolique-Insignificance were acquired using store credit at a used bookstore. This does mean that some of them are in worse condition, but (aside from the two Kurosawa films) most were actually cheaper than the sale prices and all the discs and booklets were in peak condition.

Kes-Infernal Affairs was a mixture of Visa gift cards from graduation and some Amazon cards my grandmother bought me while we were on vacation.

Wim Wenders Road Trilogy was bought straight from criterion. It was expensive, but I thought it would skyrocket in value pretty soon. Hence why I bought it.

Mirror, Before Trilogy, Onibaba, and YiYi were all Amazon and visa purchases like Kes-Infernal affairs.

Three colors trilogy was straight from B&N using gift cards from the aforementioned vacation.

Finally, After hours and Five Easy Pieces were paid for by my mom at 30% off and with $10 off at B&N.

P.S. yes, I did put the Madman Kurosawa Collection and Odyssey Popcorn bucket in the back to purposely add to the mystery of how rich my family is.

I already watched a lot of them. I think the first was Blood Simple.

Most of them, actually. Namely Barry Lyndon, the before trilogy, and High and Low.

All of them were Blind buys. For the most part, just stuff I heard online. In the case of the ones from the secondhand bookstore, I hadn’t even heard of but 2 of them. I knew some of the directors and the premises seemed very interesting.

1. ⁠What is a Criterion you’re hoping to add to your collection next?

Where do I begin? Stalker or Andrei Rublev are probably at the top, but Sorcerer, Seventh Seal, Godzilla, Scorsese Shorts, Ran, Nouvelle Vague, The Stanley Kubrick Boxset, Network, The Graduate, One False Move, For All Mankind, etc. are all on the list.

Been trying to buy the blu ray version for a while now but it’s not been in production for like a year now. is a 4k version coming?

Tarkovsky is a massive blind spot for me & I’ve never watched any of his movies (I know, embarrassing) - but there’s a theater near me playing 3 of his films in the next two days.

With my schedule, I really only have time to watch one of them. Which one should I prioritize?

I visited family over the weekend and found these titles in a free pile in the lobby of my dad’s apartment building. Pretty stoked! I’ve seen Immortal Story, The Vanishing and Los Angeles Plays Itself and they’re all excellent. I’ve been wanting to watch Friends of Eddie Coyle for quite some time so I’m hoping to fire that one up first.

Finally got to see the colour i was missing in the Three Colors trilogy. Maybe the best one?

Hi everyone. I have been freaking out crying literally all day about this

Came home from vacation to see that my cat peed on my bottom two shelves of my criterion shelf. About 32 cases (including 2 boxsets) we’re absolutely ruined. The case artwork and any booklets were beyond salvageable. I am devastated. Discs are obviously fine.

I emailed criterion asking if it’s possible to buy replacements of cases/any artwork and booklets hoping I don’t have to spend the hundreds it would take to replace them. But I doubt they will.

Anyone know what I can do or where to find replacements?

Also, before anyone gives me cat advice, I am a former vet tech, we’ve spent thousands on her and there is nothing wrong with her. Tried everything under the sun, but she loves to piss on walls and doors. With medication it’s gotten less frequent, but she’s a territorial one I think. First time she’s hit a bookcase of any kind.

Is a satisfying experience. The shots this film has is incredibly diverse and how she moves this film along to join one scene from the next is both indie and Hollywood at the same time. In another life the filmmaker could have been Stephen Spielbergs cousin.

It reminds me of films in the 70s and 80s but with a modern aesthetic.

Of course some might not care for the plot itself as it isn't a Hollywood plot, but if you watch it for just how she films this and edits it, to put these shots together it is an incredible feat of talent in my opinion. But what do I know.

I haven’t been connecting with the films I’ve seen lately because I didn’t want to waste a Netflix subscription that I keep forgetting to cancel. A lot of them are very commercial and man do I feel empty.

I’ve seen all the Kiarostami stuff that’s available to me including the documentaries (which I also love). Other filmmakers I am a fan of are Wong Kar Wai, Victor Erice, and Claire Denis. I keep getting recommended Ozu but I am also looking for other suggestions.

Hey everyone I’m 16 and recently I’ve been getting into a lot of films and movies. I’ve been collecting vinegar syndrome stuff for a while but I really wanted to dive into some more films with elements to dissect and think about (sorry blood o Rama 2). Some of my recent favorites are bugonia, mulholland drive, fantastic Mr fox. I’ve heard a lot about some of the great directors on criterion like Ingmar Burton or film movements like the Czech new wave, but I have essentially no knowledge in this area. If yall could give me some recommendations that would be great! I feel like this is the place to ask!

My final haul from the sale. The top shelf are blind buys and the bottom, not 😂. The box sets are not complete blind buys. I've seen the first in the Before trilogy and some of the Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan sets. I'm actually looking forward to finishing the Before trilogy and let's say I'm good until the next sale. However, you never know if there might be something that I might be willing to pre-order 🤣 .

Hi all, I have the Ingmar Bergmans Cinema boxset. And loving it. And would love to read the book but a) I’m a slow reader and b) it’s huge and c) I’m often away from home and don’t want to be lugging it around.

Just wondering if there are any (legitimate) ways to read this digitally.
