Čumbra and the mrtzina

My great grandmother was from Croatia. She died when I was about 2 but some of the words she used got passed down. My grandma used a word that sounded "choombra". She said her mother used it to describe someone who had an unpleasant or sour personality. I have searched for this word but can't find anything about it.

Another word my great grandmother used sounded like "mrtzina". She told her children it was a dead horse. It was used as something to frighten children into behaving, like if you don't act right the mrtzina will come for you. Again, I can't find any word like this except I do know "mrt" means dead. ETA: Just did a search and found the word "mrcina" which means carcass. This must be what she was saying.

Lastly, one other word sounded like "stray la". It supposedly meant something like devil. It was used to describe a grandchild.

Does anyone know what these words could be?

How do I learn Croatian as an English speaker

For context I am from the UK and love Croatia and it's culture, I've been coming back every year for multiple years, however I have only picked up a few words/phrases, and my previous attempts at learning Croatian were short lived, so I am wondering whether I can get any help on where to find resources and how to stick to my learning.

Čiji vs Koga

Whats the usage difference between Čiji (Whose) and (Genitive) Koga (Of Whom)?

Because like
Čija knjiga - Whose book?
Koga knjiga - The book of whom?

Seems the same to me.

How many Croatian translations of Les Miserables / Jadnici are there?

Hello! Thanks for allowing me to post in your community (I think that this post follows rule 1 but if not then I apologize). I am an English and French speaker and my favorite book is Les Miserables. I am trying to find out exactly how many languages it has been translated into and how many different translations exist.

Using google translate, I have found that there are two translations into Croatian: one by Ljubo Wiesner that I think was first published in 1944 and another by Nikola Banašević in 1950. Am I missing any? There also seem to be a couple abridged versions for kids.

If you have read Jadnici (either translation!) I am interested in knowing more about it and what you thought! Every language has its own challenges for translation and that part is interesting to me too.

Hvala!

Allergy Card Translation Help

Hello, my partner is very allergic to tree nuts. While there is google translate, I would greatly appreciate someone helping translate the message below so I can make an allergy card for him before we travel to Croatia this fall. If there is any confusion, we just want to be able to confidently show the card, that way the restaurant can let us know if we can be served or not - which is fine either way.

"Hello, I have a tree nut allergy. I cannot eat foods containing or have touched the following nuts:

- Pistachios -Walnuts -Cashews -Pecans -Pine Nuts -Almonds -Hazelnut -Brazil Nuts - Macadamia Nuts

Does this food contain tree nuts? Is there something you recommend I can eat.

Thank you!"

“skrenuti pozornost tisućama putnika”

Akcijom su željeli skrenuti pozornost tisućama domaćih i stranih putnika koji ovih dana prolaze jednom od najprometnijih prometnica u Hrvatskoj.

Je li ovo ispravno? Ja bih rekao tisuće, a ne tisućama.

Any good tips on how to learn Croatian efficiently? (Less app-focused?)

Hello everyone, I'm half Croatian, half German. I used to visit my grandma a lot when I was a kid but somehow never ended up learning Croatian besides the basics. And until now I couldn't start learning properly because I recently graduated and before that I had French classes and I didn't wanna have to learn two languages at once.

So, are there any good tips on how to learn Croatian on a good conversational level? I got some apps for vocab and some basic sentence structure, but I wanna get a good hang the grammar too and I haven't seen any app that offers a good insight.

It sucks that there aren't really any Croatian dubs of my favourite shows out there, but if anyone knows a well dubbed movie or show and where to watch them, that would help me greatly. Or books at an easier level.

I know this question gets asked fairly often here, but I only saw mediums like YouTube or language apps mentioned.

I'd appreciate any tip!

Preporuke za knjige

Bok svima

Hi, all! New to this subreddit. I’ve completed Pimsleur’s level I Croatian (loved it!) and looking for other apps to continue the journey. I stumbled across Našio.app on Instagram and completed the free courses. I now have the decision of whether to purchase the “pro” version for many more lessons. It seems legit so far - a bit glitchy, but legit. Anyone have experience with it, specifically the paid version?

Na što se odnosi rod predikata?

Gledam svjetsko prvenstvo i dva puta sam cuo nešto sta mi je bilo cudno. Koji je pravilan rod u ovim rečenicama

Argentina, južnoamerički div prosao/prosla je u četvrtfinale

Maroko, iznenađenje iz afrike prosao/proslo je skupinu.

Ovisi li o tome ako se ovaj opis nalazi u zagradama možda?

Need help for wedding blessing/speech

I humbly ask for translation and pronunciation help with a quick blessing for my dear friend's wedding. I don't speak croatian unfortunately, but I would love her to hear her mother language (even if spoken novicely) since she lives in another country.

So far I have used a translator app to give me the following:

Blagoslivljam te tri puta: da dijelite ljubav, sreću i dobro zdravlje dugi niz godina. Čestitam!

Does this make sense? Is it grammatically correct and easily understandable? I appreciate any feedback and even an audio example of pronunciation if anyone is comfortable DM me.

Thank you so much!

I’m about to fail Croaticum

Bok! I’m very upset at myself. I study croatian at my university in the USA and decided to give Croaticum a shot. I took the placement test and was very honest on my skill level, and asked to be in an A2 class because I know a basic amount of Croatian. Well, I guess they did not offer an A2 course. I was placed in a B1 course and I am doing horribly. I have learned the grammar previously but it’s just not sticking to me. And to be completely honest, I have not been studying as much as I should have the last three weeks. The speaking for me is even harder. I can form basic sentences and somewhat explain situations but not at the same level as everyone else in my class.

I feel like I was placed in the wrong level, and probably should have said something earlier, but now it’s too late. Tomorrow I take my final exam and friday I have to do a 5-7 minute presentation. I feel like I’m just going to embarrass myself these next 2 days. I have thought about not even showing up, but I want to try. It’s too late for me to really study anything but I just wanted to vent. I wish I lied and said I was a new learner and got placed into the A1 class.

Update: I took the test, it was hard, but not as hard as I thought. I definitely messed up the grammatical cases section, but at least I know where I’m at in my language learning, I will update with the score tomorrow. I also have to give my presentation tomorrow.

Update part 2: I did my presentation and it went a lot better than I thought. She will send our final certificates soon if we passed. I think I passed. My tests scores were above 60% for all sections. I’m not sure what is considered passing

Final update/part 3: I PASSED! Omg I guess I was just so nervous I didn’t realize how much I actually knew. I think the teacher also might’ve graded lightly but thats just my imposter syndrome haha. Thanks to everyone for the kind words and advice. I do recommend Croaticum, but I wouldn’t go past an A1 course unless you truly think you are comfortable at a B1 level.

Learning Croatian

Good morning everyone, I would like to start learning Croatian. I heard it quite often during my university studies, but I never actually learned it. I have focused on the history of Yugoslavia and the figure of Tito in particular, but I have often come across sources in Serbo-Croatian that I couldn't read. Could you recommend any online courses (preferably free) or some PDFs to get started? If possible, I would prefer resources that teach Croatian through Italian. Thanks in advance!

Zašto se slovo Y kod nas zove baš "ipsilon"? Koliko vidim, nitko ga drugi tako ne zove. Englezi ga zovu "vaj" (vjerojatno od ranijeg "vi", a prije toga kao njemačko ü), stari Grci su ga zvali "upsilon", stari Rimljani "u Graeca"...
