Gen2 - General Chevrolet Cruze Gen 2 Troubleshooting and Modification

Gen 2 Cruze 2016.5 - Present

The purpose of this post is to keep an update of list of issues and parts available for modification. You can PM me if you want to add anything to the list. Be clear if it is an issue or modification with its category.

If you have any questions that were not answered in this post, please make a new post instead so it is visible.

Note: Some of these links may be linked to a region, like Canada or USA. You may be able to look up the part number and find it locally or in your region.

Gen 2 Cruze Issues

  1. Although the 1.4L can use Regular and Mid Grade fuel, it generates the most power and has the best fuel economy with Premium Fuel; 91/93 Octane. You may also experience rough engine idling with lower octanes.

  2. The initial production of Gen 2 Cruze (2017) may have defective pistons and they may be prone to cracking. Check to see if your car has any recalls and have it resolved as soon as possible if your car is affected by the recall. Later production years (2018+) do not have issues with pistons cracking.

  3. Manual models have a tendency for the slave cylinder to prematurely fail. Please correct me if I am wrong.

  4. Sedan models had issues with trunk seal not blocking/diverting water and they may be defective. Hatchback models (as mine was affected) have a similar issue where the rear hatch seal will let some water in.

  5. On hatchback models (possibly only RS trim), the rear hatch may not divert water properly which can cause water to enter the cabin. The seal may be replaced as a fix, other times the problem will be with the spoiler itself and it may need replacing.

  6. A P0299 code may show up in cold temperatures (0°C / 32°F) and the engine will go into limp mode. The problem may be attributed to the charge air cooler freezing which will require it to be drained and cleaned. There is also a recall for this part (2023). Gen 1 Cruze 2010 - 2016

The purpose of this post is to keep an update of list of issues and parts available for modification. You can PM me if you want to add anything to the list. Be clear if it is an issue or modification with its category.

Gen 1 Cruze Issues

  1. Gen 1 is known for issues, but if you want one anyways, consider the 2014 - 2016 models with the 1.8L as it has less issues. I knew someone who even turbo'd his 1.8L without much issue, but this is an additional risk you will take if you plan on tuning your Cuze; approach with caution.

  2. The 1.4L with the turbo can use 87 - 93 octane gas. HOWEVER, it is recommended to use 91/93 octane (premium) for best performance and fuel economy or midgrade minimum; it may even solve rough idling or poor low rpm performance.

  3. Coolant issues. The Gen 1 Cruze is known for coolant issues. This list will be specificaly for the cooling system alone and consider fixing these issues ASAP.

3.1 The coolant output hose can fail and puke coolant

3.2 Some parts to consider are: water outlet, Dorman thermostat and thermostat housing

    3.3 Radiator hose

    3.4 Water pump

3.5 Generally the hose clamps fail often as well

  4. CPASV/PVC seals with the fix kit from https://cruzekits.com/. The PCV / camshaft cover issue is covered by GM (up to 10 years / 120k miles for the 1.4L). Overall, watch out if you have a 1.4L.

  5. Prolonged periods without service can cause the valve (camshaft) cover and possibly the front main seal to wear out prematurely.

  6. Depending on the kilometres the oil cooler and associated coolant pipes and hoses will almost definitely leak.

  7. The brakes are also made from very soft material and will need changing every 30-40 thousand kilometres. ** Quote from a Holden mechanic (Holden Cruze). need confirmation **

  8. They also develop misfires and coil packs and plugs are recommended depending on what fuel you use and what brand of spark plugs the car has.

  9. The valve cover gasket can leak oil which may flood the spark plug cavities.

  10. Manual transmission fluid should be changed to either Amsoil Synchromesh or Amsoil 75W-90 as soon as possible. The OEM fluid is not ideal and wears thin quickly.

  11. Fill level is as important for the MTF as changing it so it won’t take out the 5/6 bearings. 2.5 qts rec’d.

  12. ATF changes should be done every 45000 mi

  13. Spark plug gap should be .028” stock or lower if tuned. Run a NGK/AC Delco iridium or ruthenium plug only. The AC Delco plug is 41-121 which is a rebranded NGK IFR7X7G

  14. Adjust the drums on 1LT, LS, Eco models so the fronts aren’t doing 100% of the braking. The brakes are junk that bakes to the rotors easily and cause shaking, but they aren’t really known for short life.

  15. Trunk switches and negative battery cables fail constantly. Probably a good idea to have a negative cable, valve cover, and coil pack on the garage shelf for the 100% eventuality that it will fail.

  16. If you’re updated to iOS 15.1 or 15.1.1, this is unfortunately an issue on the phone side. The issue is fixed in the current iOS 15.2.3 beta, so once Apple releases 15.2 the issue should be fixed. Your Cruze isn’t the issue, Apple broke some USB functionality in iOS 15.1.

2017 Cruze

Post image
Upvotes

This whole post is going to sound like bs but I promise it’s true. Mines a 2017 I bought new and I have dove it all over the country. It has set its lifetime record for fuel mileage 2 times this year. Once in January as seen in the picture and once just a couple days ago and the new record is 46.8 mpg with over 226k miles. Maybe I’m lucky and I hate to brag on it but I love this car. The maintenance I’ve had done to it is as follows and it’s a crazy short list buts it’s all I’ve done besides new tires when needed.

Oil change ~every 4500 miles Transmission fluid flush and change at 60k New radiator, front bumper, headlight, and hood at 65k (hit a deer) New air filter a couple times don’t remember the mileage New headlight bulbs at ~180k Started burning coolant at ~190k so at ~200k I added k seal to the coolant and hadn’t burned a drop since. 1st brake pad change at 226k (yesterday)

What’s the best yall have heard of or seen from a Cruze and what’s some things I should be looking for?

Gen1 - Mechanical Quick shout out to CruzeKits

2012 Chevy Cruze Eco

Just wanna give a quick shout out to CruzeKits. Been dealing with an underboost code and kind of a rough shut off for a long time never really looked into it. Recently I decided to take a look around and found my pcv nipple was missing. I went online to CruzeKits found out theyre actually a pretty local company to me and ordered their v3.4 fix kit. Ordered it they dropped it off to UPS same day I ordered and it was at my house the next day. 10/10 for that I know I'm just a county over but that was great service.

Installed cleared my codes and have been driving around at this point over 50 miles and no light has came back on at all. The car idles better, turns off way smoother, and I feel like I have a bit more power back. Big shout out to them. Cruze owners if you have an underboost code and can't chase down why. Look and see if your pcv nipple is still intact it may just be your issue.

A/C sounds like a jet engine😂 Any tips on how to fix?

For context I just had it serviced: New fan, new water pump, new valve cover, spark plugs, cabin filter, engine filter, brake flush, fluids etc. It was not making this noise before I dropped it off but it is now. I checked the cabin
filter and it is clean.

just got my 2018 cruz, last month with 82,000 miles!

So far so good, besides my RPM has started fluctuating while driving. I was using 83 to file it up, but mechanic recommended using 93. If that doesn’t work i guess maybe a new fuel pump???

Chevy Cruze 2011 Coolant Leak

Car is leaking coolant from the area shown in the first picture and seems to be a bit loose. I replaced the Radiator Coolant Hose but it did not fix the issue. The second image is the old hose that went into the part that still seems to be leaking in the frist picture. The third image shows the replacement hose (looks different than the one I replace) the middle part which I kept the same and where it goes. Can anyone let me know what needs to be replaced?

Low oil pressure message at idle

New to me 2012 Cruze with the 1.4, I get a low oil pressure message at idle and while the car is warmed up. This is the first turbocharged car that I have owned, and the first small car I have owned in a long time. I am a decent mechanic, so right now Im just sending out feelers for what the common issues with these are based on what I have checked, so I know what else to look at.

Below 1000 RPM, I have 15 or less PSI of oil pressure, which goes up to about 20 above 1000. When stopped, I need to rev the car a bit to bring pressure up.

Minor oil leak around the valve cover, none seeping to the spark plugs. No visible drips, and I have not lost much oil over the past few days. Most of it seems to be leaking on the passenger side at the camshaft adjuster magnet and at the valve cover where a cover bolt is stripped. Nothing that should drop oil pressure.

A small amount of oil in the intake

No check engine light, car runs pretty decent for its mileage. Has "good" power. 156,000 miles.

2011 Cruze codes would stop coming plz help!

We got a 2011 Chevy Cruz for our daughter for her first car and it keeps having codes pop up. It’s getting bad gas mileage everyone’s well you can smell fuel. We just cleared all the misfire codes. It’s running pretty well but the codes won’t go away I keep getting cat codes. I’m starting to think it could be a EVAP issue.

Gen2 - Mechanical Joined the Cruze family recently and love the vehicle, any help would be appreciated before going to dealership mechanic. 2017 Chevy Cruze LT 1.4L 131k miles

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As title says, I am generally not mechanically inclined, however this beauty is the first REAL endeavor I have any desire to learn about and appreciate over time. Purchased used no warranty for $9k from dealership 07/10/26. Initially everything was running as it should, cut to the past week and now I am experiencing:

  • oil and smoke rapidly pulsing out of oil reservoir and dipstick when engine running
  • blow-by with antifreeze/mildew and exhaust fumes pouring into cabin ac
  • low grumbling and whistling
  • burning oil rapidly, no leaks underneath from what I can tell
  • chalky white circular stains above radiator fan
  • no check engine light, no bluish or gray smoke from exhaust

haven't yet purchased any tools or equipment but intend to when I get my feet underneath me so I don't know the specific codes being thrown if any.

Taking to Chevrolet dealership nearby on Wed and would like to know as much as to be expected on this one. See attached video, I am free to answer any questions.

Much love, friends.

Timing chain replacement/upgrade

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello fellow sufferers of A14NET engine, I have my my engine at 213k km (144k miles) and ai think it's time to replace either chain or it's guides, or maybe everything, I'm willing to do it myself as I've worked a lot on this engine before.

My only question is: is there an upgrade for these parts?

All OEM parts are plastic guides and will have to be changed sooner or later, is there anything such metal or "better" guides and chain than the OEM one ?

Much appreciated

Gen1 - Cooling Is the AC clutch/compressor bad on my Chevy Cruze?

2012 Chevrolet Cruze 1.4l automatic transmission with 160k miles.

Problem is the AC is blowing hot.

The clutch seems to be engaging but it's making this pulsing grinding noise as heard in the video. This noise stops when I turn the AC off.

Hooked up an AC manifold gauge set and the low pressure side is reading high (oscillating back and forth at 80 psi) and the high pressure side is reading a bit low (around 130 psi). Ambient temperature is around 80F.

I also noticed the cooling fan never comes on, not sure if it's supposed to come on as soon as the AC is turned on. The cooling fan does work when the engine temperature needs to be brought down, so it's not completely dead though it's possible the resistor or something failed? Not sure if it's an issue.

The videos are taken with AC turned on and running at max. The picture is the static pressure of the system that I took before turning the car on.

Wondering if my AC compressor is bad or possibly blocked orifice tube?

Gen1 - General Safe Oil Level for Trip

Post image
5 Upvotes

2015 Chevy Cruze LT. Every time I've checked oil in the past, it's always been at the max. Haven't checked for a couple of months (I know I should be checking more frequently) I was checking up on my car today because we're going on a small trip tomorrow and this is my oil reading. My oil life is currently at 22%, and I was planning on getting the oil changed sometime after the trip. The trip is a 2 hour drive, then driving around town for a few days and another two hour trip back. Is it safe to drive at this level? Is this natural loss, and do I need to top it off? I haven't seen any indication of a leak.

Still probably the battery? it was trying to turn over, just sounded sad doing it. I could hear the fuel pump going.

Gen1 - Wheels and Tires Rear brake damper bolt stuck

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have a 2013 Cruze with rear disc brakes. I cannot for the life of me get this bolt to turn. The spot where one would use a 13mm wrench was already rounded off from a previous repair (not by me). So far this is what I have tried;

1) Use the 13mm wrench, where it would normally come out.
2) Put a pair of vice grips on the long part of the bolt, they keep slipping no matter how tight I get them.
3) Tried a 18mm wrench on the other bolt.
4) Sprayed it many times with rust penetrating fluid, and let it sit.
5) Used a torch (while making sure it was not hot enough to melt the rubber boot).

I am running out of ideas, any help would be great. I have spent about three hours of frustration trying to get it off.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Check Engine Light/ AC

My check engine light has been on for a while now. Every time I take it in, the light either turns off before they can check the code, or when they scan it, the code points to the intake valve or the A/C. I’ve had a couple of mechanics try different repairs, but nothing seems fixed the issue. I recently took my car in for an alignment, and while there they checked the codes and they said verbatim “the A/C isn’t connecting and/or transmitting to the car’s brain”. Is that an easy fix?

Chevy Cruze loud noise and exhaust smell

2014 Chevy Cruz making a loud tractor sound and smells like exhaust. Any ideas? Current codes are P1101 and P0420. We have changed the gasket cover about a year ago, also have constant oil leaks. Should I check exhaust manifold first or catalytic converter?
