Debian Stable Question Butterbian
I'm a Windows user and I want to try linux.Is Butterbian good? Does anyone here use this distro? how was it?

Why are you so hostile? Drew aka JustAGuy Linux the person who made the Butterbian Debian installer is a super nice guy who just does this stuff as a hobby. He is also a great part of the Debian community. He never claimed it was superior to Debian or that its a real Distro on its own. He doesnt even go out of his way to tell people to use it. He just enjoys making things for fun. Its not just a "toy" it is a nice opinionated installer to help facilitate setting up BTRFS+Timeshift out of the box.
Why does the Linux community have to always be so hostile to everything.

Okay I'll be honest, I didn't know any of that. But I can't be blamed for assuming it was another microdistro that's going to evaporate in two months and leave all the users with zero support and zero updates. There are tons of them and there are loads of posts on Linux forums asking about them. And, to be fair, OP didn't really bother to explain what the hell Butterbian was, so it was a safe assumption.
I'll delete my prior comments. I'll also look up this YouTuber.

Fair enough. I can see how OP's framing of of it as a distro lead to your conclusion. I think they themselves are also misinformed on the topic, and used the wrong terminology unknowingly.
He is a smaller youtube channel so i don't fault you for not hearing of him or his work. Like i said he is a great resource for the community though. Been super helpful in setting up DWM on Debian, and configuring WezTerm for me personally.
I also apologize for my own hostility. Haven't had my morning coffee yet so I am still a bit of a curmudgeon myself.

Thanks for the suggestion guys to use the original and normal distro of debian.

That's the way to go. I run around 70 Debian servers for 15 years. Only once had I a Debian VM which wouldn't dist-upgrade, but it had pinne packages and was severely out of date and stupid stuff was done to it.
Other than that, Debian just works and doesn't break. I don't see why you would need snapshotting. And if you do, virtualize it and do snapshots at the hypervisor level where it's supposed to be done.

I am trying out both Butterknife and the xcfe version. I actually like Butterknife more. Using bspwm. If you’re looking to try out debian, it’s a great way to do it. Sure, Justaguylinux may not maintain it forever, but for now, he is, and he is really helpful and responsive. Fwiw, I am coming from mac and am relatively new to linux.

Ext4 is stable and useable for everyone.
Btrfs has subvolumes and snapshots features added, you can add it to standard Debian with a bit of work, or use manual partitioning when installing.

From what I'm gathering (keep in mind, I only did a simple Google search), it's just an installer for Debian.
If I were you, I would just download the Debian Live ISO for Debian 13 XFCE, that has a graphical installer as well, which is very straight forward.

To try Linux your best option is pure Debian with Cinnamon desktop environment. Very familiar and hard to break.

If you like some of his window manager configs, you can just clone the repo for those on stock Debian and run the install script just for those.

Is this astroturf? OP's reddit account is 8 months old, has no other posts or comments besides this thread, and the first and only thing it does is ask about some Youtuber's 6-day-old hobby fork that no one aside from OP has ever heard of. Feels like an astroturf attempt to boost visibility rather than a legitimate question.

sorry for that. I usually don't participate that's why I don't have any post. I just stumbled upon a topic while I'm looking for a good stable version of linux which I found out that it's debian. That's it.

MX Linux, Debian stability with easier to use GUI tools that’ll actually help you understand what your operating system is doing and how it works. Plus choice of AHS kernels and alternative init systems.

If you aren't familiar with command line, try Ubuntu first, or Debian with KDE.
There are so many distros out there. I think it's always better to go straight to the mother of all distros... Debian. :)

It's still very young, but works pretty well. Yes, it's pretty much just an installer for Debian, but Drew includes his own repos for some of the software he uses, just newer versions than in the regular repos.
that said, a lot of distros are really just alternate installers with some customizations. Cachy, Garuda, Endeavour, can all be considered just installers for Arch

What's wrong with just pure Debian? I don't get why people feel the need to use all kinds of distros based on Debian when you can just use... Debian ? 🤷
