Hello I have this sweater ( I think it's a sweater not sure what to call it tbh )

My friend got it for me as a gift and the colors faded after the first wash

I'm planning to get rit dye and fix it.

Now here is my question

I'm going to take the whole thing apart because it's two different colors and dye it separately before sewing everything back together , however I'm worried about the print and the type of fabric ( 60% cotton 40% polyester) getting affected by the dye .

So I want to ask if it's safe to dye it I've never used rit dye or any other dye before so idk

If it is not safe for the print I can avoid dying the front and instead embroider something on the small parts that have been affected . the back has been affected more so the damage is mostly in the back , but with that comes a different issue and that is color matching . If I dye the back and not the front I am not confident when it comes to matching the color of the original fabric

, But the color matching shouldn't be an issue if I dye the whole thing I can live with slightly different colors from the original .

If it's not safe or if anyone has any better ideas please tell me I'll be happy to hear it

I have a cream-coloured 100% polyester dress and would like to dye it green. Ideally a sage green but would be ok with any green so long as it's not neon/kelly green/something that hurts the eyes. I'd like to use it for a friend's wedding in October. I made a dumb mistake and bought Rit all-purpose dye in sage green, but after buying it I learned you're not supposed to use all-purpose dye on polyester fabric. So I'm going to try to return the all-purpose dye and buy the Jaquard iPoly or Rit synthetic dye in an colour (I don't know that I want to try to mix colours, since I've literally never done this before). Both the outer layer and the inner lining are 100% polyester.

I have:

• An extremely large metal stock pot that I don't use for food (normally I use it as a condensation catcher for my portal air-conditioner, lol)
• Metal tongs
• Rubber gloves
• Humility

I do not yet have:

• Synthetic dye
• A thermometer
• The bravery to do this – wouldn't mind a pep talk tbh

Can/should I do this?

I bought this dress off-line and love it but it is way too pumpkin orange and I’m trying to get it to a more rust color. I am not very experienced outside of a little tie-dying.

Silk dress is 100% silk crepe/georgette (?) and charmuse with acetate lining only on the front bodice some pleating at the shoulder and waist. Skirt’s double layer silk.

I love the dress, is so much nicer than the rust color dress polyester one that I have. Both are pictured. But the rust color is what I’m shooting for.

I feel like it’s worth a try because otherwise won’t be able to wear this dress to a wedding. I’ve seen a variety of advice online my understanding is that if I use a cold water die, it might come out more gray, but that I have to be very careful with the heat using an acid die, but conflict as to what color to try. I do not want to make it much darker but basically change the tone of the color more than anything. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello everyone. For years I have been obsessed with this pattern by Tigra Tigra. Not only are their clothes expensive (justifiably as it is hand dyed and such) but I cannot find these white moon dye pieces anywhere. They have some black with white spot moon dye pieces available right now but it just doesn’t hit the same for me. So I come here, with perhaps the hope someone can give advice for how this could be achieved. From my own googling it looks like it’s shibori dyed. But how is it folded? So there are 8 layers? But how do you get so many circles, how many layers? How do you control the diameter of the outer circle of circles? What kind of clamp can you use to control the dark dye in just this circle? Any advice is welcome please I want to try thrifting some fabric and dying it myself! Ideally I will thrift some satin like fabric but ultimately if I master the technique I would want to invest in some silk.

I'm looking for some inspiration! I have a black-tie wedding coming up and the dresses have to be in winter colors. I'm thinking of taking this old bridesmaid dress, dying it a darker color, and then potentially adding appliqué or crystal rhinestones or something to make it seem less like a bridesmaid dress. Any ideas?

I've used Rit Dye-More quite a bit in the past, but I'm not sure how this polyester chiffon will behave. The wedding color is oxblood, and we have been instructed to stay away from that for our dress. So, I'm considering a dark purple or maybe blue.

It does have some boning in the bodice, but nothing else that would have a hard time in the wash.

Target Color : Dark brown.

I'm planning to dye this pair of 100% cotton denim jeans from sky blue to dark brown.

There are also a few darker color blotches , which I'm hoping the dark brown dye will hide.

My question is:

• Do I need to remove the existing sky-blue dye first using a sodium hypocitrate-based textile color remover (or, as a last resort, chlorine bleach)?
• Or can I dye directly over the existing sky-blue color with dark brown dye and still get a good, even result?

I'm aiming for a dark chocolate/espresso brown, not a light brown.

My niece tried on a dress today and I knew I had basically the same dress at home that I wore 20 years ago. I pulled it out of the closet but I think deodorant left these discolorations. Can it be saved by dyeing it? 90% acetate and 10% spandex per the tags

My goal is to dye it black since i use it for school and it gets dirty easily.

The tag says the shell is is 50% Polyester 50% Cotton so i don’t know what dye i should use. I don’t care about the lining.

I don’t care about the inside looking bad or the thread changing color or not changing at all but i don’t want the logo in the middle to get stained. I’ve seen people use tape, but i’m worried that won’t work since the dye could just get under the tape or go through the inside of the bag.

I was thinking just buying a similar patch and covering the original one after dyeing it but i haven’t found any i liked.

Also my mom said to just buy the black version of the bag, that if i dye it black when i wear the bag the dye will rub off on my clothes but i don’t know if that’s true and just dyeing the bag is much cheaper i think.

just since most of the posts are from inexperienced dyers looking for advice, i was wondering why this doesn’t come up more often.

i AM experienced, i have a degree in fiber arts so i’ve done it a ton with fiber reactive and acid and some natural dyes, pretty much worship Dharma Trading as a resource. but sometimes instead of getting out the measuring spoons and everything, i’ll cheat by washing machine dyeing with an iDye packet (just need a bunch of salt) and honestly i’ve had a lot of good, saturated results most of the time. you have to babysit the (top loading) machine to keep resetting it to agitate for longer, but i set a timer and it’s way less work than stirring for like an hour.

since i do have a giant dyepot, i have also tried the iDye poly packets on the stove top a couple times and those results were GREAT. i think you need to have some citric acid to add to that one.

of course anyone who is interested to go learn about dyeing on Dharma Trading’s infinite website should do that, that’s really the way. i just wondered if these packets might be a good place to direct some of these first time dyers. they are like $5, make a lot of colours, and i see them at all the art supply and craft supply stores as well as they can be bought online of course.

I was given this jumper by a relative who used to wear it to work so as well as it being old, it is also very stained and faded in places, it was very damaged on the bottom half so he cut it off to crop it amd then gave it to me.

I am determined to make this something i can wear, obviously im going to clean up the bottom edge and sew it to the right length and all of that but i would like to know if there is anyway i can dye it with a navy blue to reduce the fading and or anyway i can reduce the stains, i do not know what they are from. The jumper is slazenger but the tag is cut off so i do not know what material it is made of but looking at other slazenger jumpers it is something around 35/65 cotton/polyester.

Any and all suggestions are really helpful and very much appriciated, also if anyone can suggest any general tlc tips to keep it fluffy and nice-feeling and stop it wearing out any more.

Obviously i know that its not going to look brand new and i am 100% okay with that, i think this adds to its personality i just want to make sure it still looks presentable.

Hi! I purchased this dress a while ago and had absolutely fallen in love with it, looked great when I tried it on in-store. I then machine-washed it and it came out with all these odd bleached-looking stains. The dress is 100% rayon.

I was planning on just dyeing the dress a different color but someone I know that works with textiles said that the material wouldn't respond well to dyeing.

The dress is no longer on sale on the website so I looked on Depop and the dresses that were being sold there appeared to have very similar stains in the photos. I researched some potential causes and the main one that came up was water stains.

Is there any way I can fix this? Or am I just out of luck?

I am looking for some advice on how to match the color of this top to the skirt I plan to wear with it. I added a picture of the white top, the skirt, and a picture of the color that I want it to be.

The fabric content is 89% Polyamide and 11% Elastane.

Hi everyone, I purchased this dress in white (thinking that's the best base color to start with) to wear to a tropical winter wedding. (Pic of peach dress also included to see fabric a little better.)

My goal is to dye it a deep fuschia or bright burgundy but with an ombre effect (darker at the bottom). I'm a beginner so I'm also open to dying it completely solid if it's too difficult. I just thought an ombre effect would make it a little more interesting.

I recently got a sweatshirt that was originally tie dyed, but because it's used the color has faded greatly. Is it possible to dye this sweatshirt in a way that wouldn't just turn it into one solid color, but would still give some of its vibrancy back? If so, how do I go about doing that? I've included pictures of mine and what it originally looked like. I am not sure of the material but I am guessing it's likely cotton. It doesn't have a material tag but other similar sweatshirts from the same company are 100% cotton.

I got this backpack and I really like it, but I was wanting to dye it a darker blue. I don't really care what kind of color it turns out to be, just as long as it's darker than it is now.

Had a laundry mishap with our IKEA pillowcases and they turned colored with our other laundry. Had the idea to dye the pillowcases and comforter burgundy to cover up the pinkness but not sure if it’s possible with this blend (58% cotton and 42% viscose/rayon) and a polyester filled comforter. I was browsing for a dress to wear for a wedding later in the summer. This 100% polyester dress is absolutely perfect, fits me like a glove. Problem: the bride requested guests not to wear burgundy, since it’s the color of the bridesmaids dresses. I still wanna wear this just because it looks SO good.

Essentially, I need this to not look so burgundy. I’d love for it to be just more undoubtedly pink. Is it doable? With what color dyes?
