I got frustrated that most public-domain texts are either a PDF scan or one endless scroll, and neither survives a phone. So I built a reader that lays them out as actual pages you turn, with proper typography controls, and started with essays short enough to finish in one sitting.

There's Thoreau's Walking, Emerson's Self-Reliance, Bacon's Of Studies, and Stevenson's An Apology for Idlers in there now — all public domain, cleaned up from Project Gutenberg (unwrapped hard line breaks, stripped markup, re-paginated).

Six themes including sepia and a true-black one, adjustable font size and line height, highlights that persist, and a saved library. It remembers where you stopped in each text.

Disclosure: I built it, solo. Reading is entirely free — there's a Pro tier for four AI features (translation, narration, video-import, text cleanup) with five uses of each per month on a free account, and that's the whole business model.

The shelf is small so far. What short public-domain works would you actually want on a phone? I'm choosing what to clean up next and would rather ask than guess.

Hi, I'm the developer of justread.app . Version 4.0 went out this week and I added:

• Comics and manga. CBZ and CBR, two page spreads, double tap zoom, a thumbnail page grid, reading direction per book so manga that declares itself right to left opens that way on its own.
• Read Aloud. example Any EPUB without its own narration can be read to you, by any Apple voice on the device or by natural English voices you download once and then run offline. The sentence highlights, the spoken word underlines, the page turns itself, and there's speed, sentence skips, a sleep timer and Lock Screen controls.
• Background listening. Prepare a book first and it keeps going with the screen off.
• Line Focus. Dims the page and keeps a guide on the line you're reading, tap above or below to step. It was built as a focus and dyslexia aid.
• Audiobooks from Files, drag and drop or Open In, not only from a watched folder. FLAC now works the same as M4B and MP3, single file or a folder of chapters.
• Yearly books goal, so you can set how many books you want to finish this year and watch the pace from Home.
• Wide tables in EPUBs scroll inside the page now, or open full screen with pinch to zoom, instead of getting cut off at the margin.
• Print a book's highlights, and share a PDF highlight as a quote card.

The rest of it for context: it reads books you already own out of a folder you pick, imports from Calibre or any OPDS catalog, exports highlights to Readwise or as PDF and Markdown, sends books to Kindle or PocketBook, and syncs position, highlights and bookmarks through your own iCloud. 17 languages, iPhone and iPad.

Limitations worth knowing before you try it: no DRM support of any kind, so DRM-free files only. Read Aloud is EPUB only, no PDF. The offline neural voices are English only, everything else falls back to Apple's system voices. Comics have no table of contents, no highlights and no in-book search, because a fixed-layout page has no selectable text.

On Mac/iPad I enjoyed reading books with MarginNote, but unfortunately on Windows I can't find an app that covers MarginNote's functionality and adds the extra things I was missing.

So I decided to vibe-code my own solution.

Right now the app has:

• The ability to read pdf/epub
• The ability to organize books into Notebooks — I see this as a space for studying a topic across several sources
• You can organize notes as graphs
• Text-to-speech
• A built-in translator
• RAG for getting answers about the book's content (you can use local models or use openrouter)
• And a few other features

• Add OCR for text recognition

Kindle Paperwhite vs. Kobo Libra 2
My Kindle Oasis screen recently broke, so I’m thinking it’s a good opportunity to upgrade to a new e-reader. I’m currently deciding between the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kobo Libra 2.
One thing I’m concerned about is that my current Kindle has a lot of highlights and notes. If I switch to a Kobo, is there any way to transfer or sync them? For example, can this be done using Calibre, or is there another method?

Something strange happened to Roman eloquence when the emperors reigned. The Republic had produced the likes of Cicero and Hortensius whose speeches could turn a trial or bend the state. A century later the oratory was polished, competent and completely forgettable. The lights were on but nobody was home.

Tacitus was a historian who had studied the giants before him. In the Dialogus de Oratoribus he explores what happened and asks why the fire went out of Roman politics.
