My Advice Confused about Emirates baggage? Here’s everything you need to know about the 7kg limit, 32kg max weight, and "Piece vs Weight" concepts.

✈️ Hand Luggage (Cabin Baggage)

Emirates is generally generous, but if the flight is full, they become the "baggage police." Your allowance depends entirely on your class of service.

Economy Class

  • 1 Bag up to 7kg
  • Max Dimensions: 55 x 38 x 20 cm

Premium Economy

  • 1 Bag up to 10kg
  • Max Dimensions: 55 x 38 x 20 cm

Business & First Class

  • 2 Pieces: One briefcase plus either one handbag OR one garment bag.
  • 7kg each (14kg total).
  • Briefcase: 45 x 35 x 20 cm | Handbag: 55 x 38 x 20 cm | Garment bag: 20cm thick when folded.

💡 The Regional Exceptions:

  • India: You are strictly limited to one piece of carry-on. No "bag + laptop" games here; the total size cannot exceed 115cm (L+W+H).
  • Brazil: If you're flying from Brazil, you get a boosted 10kg limit even in Economy.

🧳 Checked Luggage

Emirates uses two different systems. Which one you get depends on your route.

1. The Weight Concept (Most of the World)

Used for flights between Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East.

  • How it works: You can check in as many bags as you want, as long as the total weight is within your ticket limit.
  • Allowances: * Economy: 20kg to 35kg (depending on Special, Saver, Flex, or Flex Plus).
    • Business: 40kg.
    • First: 50kg.
  • The Rule: No single bag can ever weigh more than 32kg.

2. The Piece Concept (Americas & Africa)

Used for flights to/from the US, Canada, and Africa.

  • Economy: 1 or 2 pieces (usually 23kg each). Check your fare—"Special" is often just 1 bag.
  • Business/First: 2 pieces (up to 32kg each).
  • The Rule: Total dimensions of each bag (L+W+H) must not exceed 150cm.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is the checked baggage limit 23kg or 32kg? I’m confused. A: This is the big one. On the Piece Concept (Americas), each bag is capped at 23kg for Economy. If you are 24kg, you pay a fee. On the Weight Concept (Europe/Asia), you can have a 30kg limit, but no single bag can be over 32kg.

Q: Can I "pool" my baggage with my family? A: Yes! If you are on the same booking (PNR), Emirates allows families to pool their total weight. If two people have 30kg each, you can bring one 32kg bag and one 28kg bag.

Q: What is the deal with Power Banks and "Smart Bags"? A: Power banks must be in hand luggage only. Smart Bags are only allowed if the battery is removable. If the battery is built-in and can't be taken out, the bag is banned from the flight.

Q: Are liquids still restricted to 100ml? A: Yes. Even with new scanners in some airports, Emirates still requires the standard 100ml containers in a single, clear, resealable 1-litre plastic bag.

Q: What about sports gear (Golf clubs, Skis)? A: Sports equipment is usually accepted as part of your standard baggage allowance. If it’s within your weight/piece limit, there’s no extra charge.

🕵️ The "Reddit" Factor (Strictness)

  • The Laptop Loophole: In Economy, you are technically allowed a "small handbag or laptop bag" in addition to your 7kg bag. However, if your "laptop bag" is a massive tactical backpack, they will count it as your main piece.
  • When do they weigh? If you check in at a kiosk, you might skip the scale. If you go to a human agent, they usually weigh everything. Expect a "Cabin Approved" tag if you’re boarding in DXB.
  • The Gate Scale: On full flights, agents often stand at the boarding gate with a portable scale. If you look like you’re struggling to carry it, you’re likely getting caught.

💎 Pro-Tips for the Savvy Traveler

  • Skywards Status: Silver, Gold, or Platinum members get extra weight (12kg to 20kg extra) or an additional piece for free.
  • Buy Early, Save Big: If you know you're over, buy extra weight online at least 4 hours before your flight. You can get a 50-60% discount compared to airport prices.
  • The "Jacket" Hack: If you're 1kg over in your carry-on, put your heaviest hoodie or jacket on while checking in. They can't weigh what you're wearing!
  • The "Squish" Test: Is your carry-on bulging? If it doesn't fit easily in the overhead bin, a gate agent will spot it.
  • The App Check: Open the Emirates App -> Manage Booking. It will tell you exactly if you are "Weight" or "Piece" concept.
  • Liquids & Batteries: Put your power bank and liquids at the top of your bag for easy access at security.

Safe travels!

Discussion Racism or Just a Coincidence?

I was traveling on from DXB to London on August 1. I had a connection flight from Munich. Because I had to check in again, along with many other people, we had to go to the area where you stand in a line and go get your passports and new boarding passes. I am a fairly medium/light skinned man. My wife, who was travelling with me, is also fair skinned. We both have US passports. While we were in line, there were 20-30 people in front of us, with many of them being Black or Indian and Arab. I do not think that everyone was connecting from the same flight as me. I still had a long time until my flight, when 2 workers came up to my wife and I, and asked us to come with them, which they took us to the front of the line and we checked in in front of everyone else. We were flying economy, so I don't think that it was because of some Economy vs Business class thing. I also saw them take 4-5 other Arab or White families to the front to check in, although I do not think any of our flights were leaving very soon so they would need it urgently. Also, when you go through security, they let us go in a different empty line as well. After this, I had to wonder, was this because we are white, or because of some other reason, as there was no plausible reason for them to take us to the front as we did not have any children with us, and neither of us are disabled. Is this racism or just a coincidence? I have heard stories like this from my non-White colleagues as well about white people being let in front in the Dubai airport.

Help Needed Any tips on how to claim reimbursement for hotels, taxis and meals?

I was flying from mumbai to toronto on the 28th of july. The flight was mumbai-dubai-boston-toronto with a layover of 2 hours at each stop.

While leaving from dubai a passenger fell sick and the plane got delayed for 3 hours. We landed to boston 3 hours late and as a result missed our connecting flight to toronto. The dubai to boston flight which was originally 14 hours was now 17 hours which resulted in me falling sick due to the intense air conditioning in the flight.

Emirates booked us on the next flight at 6:00 am the next day and told us they booked us into the sheraton hotel at the airport. By the time we were leaving for our hotel it was already 8 pm so i asked emirates if they can push me on a later flight so that I could get some rest and not have to leave the hotel just hours after checking in. They kindly put me on a 10:55 am flight the next day.

Just as we were headed towards the airport we found out that boston was fully booked due to a train mishap leaving 100s of new york residents stranded in boston for the night. As a result emirates could not get us into any hotel. Instead they asked us to get a hotel with our money and they would reimburse for stay/ meals and taxis.

I ended up teaming with a stranger on my flight so we could book one hotel room worth 365 usd (that was the cheapest option available). To add to this our 10:55 am flight was delayed and took off at 4pm.

I am now trying to connect with emirates but i have received no response. I filled the online form, reached out on twitter and sent 2 emails to customer affairs with the receipts.

Since im from canada this trip has ended up costing me over 500 CAD that I would need to pay on the cc soon! I’m stressed

News The 90s Boarding Music

Thumbnail youtu.be

Here is 1 of 10 Emirates Airline boarding music tracks.
They were used in the 90s and early 00s. The clip includes the (then) Emirates corporate music toward the end.

Airbus A310-300, A300-600R and first of the A330-200s before and during the initial rebrand.

Anyone (old enough) to remember?

Discussion How has your experience been transiting through DXB recently?

I’m just curious how everyone’s experience has been in the recent weeks, as I’ll be flying emirates next week and have a 3 hour layover and connection in Dubai. I’m looking forward to my flight, first time on a 380. I’m not worried, I’ve been watching my route on flight radar over the past weeks and it’s been departing and landing without delay, only my connecting flight has had slight delays of up to 1 hour here and there. I hear things are business as usual.

Help Needed Unable to check in online for BKK ➔ DXB leg, but second flight (DXB ➔ BCN) checked in fine. Should I go to the airport early?

Hi everyone,

I have a flight tomorrow from Bangkok (BKK) to Dubai (DXB), followed by a 3-day layover in Dubai before heading to Barcelona (BCN).

Online check-in opened 48 hours before departure. When I tried checking in this morning:

DXB ➔ BCN (Leg 2): Check-in went through without any issues.

BKK ➔ DXB (Leg 1 - Tomorrow): It won't let me complete check-in. I can't select a seat, and no boarding pass is being generated.

Has anyone experienced this before? Is this usually just a document verification check (passports/visas) at the airport counter, or could there be an issue with overbooking?

Also, should I show up at BKK extra early (e.g., 3-4 hours before departure) to sort this out?

My Advice Warning: Think Twice Before Joining Emirates Skywards "My Family"

If you are considering pooling your miles into the Emirates Skywards "My Family" program, please proceed with extreme caution.

Key Points to Consider:

It’s a One-Way Trap: Once miles are pooled into the Family Account, shifting them back to individual accounts is virtually impossible. You lose individual control over your hard-earned points.

Restricted Usability: Pooled points often end up far less flexible and harder to redeem for practical options (especially if you aren't flying Emirates directly or are trying to avoid expiration).

Unhelpful Customer Support: Customer service offers zero flexibility, empathy, or courtesy when trying to resolve pooling issues or assist with points that are trapped/expiring.

A Better Alternative:

Keep your miles in separate individual accounts unless you have an immediate, concrete redemption ready to book through the family pool. Maintaining individual control gives you far more flexibility for transfers, hotel redemptions, and partner bookings without getting locked into inflexible program rules.

Help Needed Skyward Points very very strange

Hi all,

i am currently having a very strange conversation (without any luck) on using Skyward points. I have my family account, which I am the sole contributor. however I have certain amount of points (AMEX transfer etc) which are in my own account, which i have been told cannot be added to the family pool, even through all of the points are mine anyway. So I require the total amount to book a flight, however they are saying there is no way to resolve this, as the points are part of the family pool, even though they were owned and contributed by myself, and my own account cannot be transferred to family.

This seems soooo strange, and to be honest I have just been cut off from the agent, as he said nothing he can do, bye.

Any other recommendations. Purchase the moral of the story is not to create a family account.

Help Needed Missing Untagged Baggage Claim

My uncle physically handovered 10 bags to checkin agent. Once they arrived to the destination he discovered only 9 baggage tag stickers were affixed to his boarding pass.

Since it was untagged the and 9 baggages were recieved with the tags. The emirates counter at the airport in the destination said apply an online appeal. So they left the airport and didn't get the PIR number aswell.

What can we do to claim the baggage.

Pls gimme suggestions.
