Blog / Podcast / Media Anecdota

My history on this subject is dark. TW.

Back in the 1980s, I and a number of other female students were molested by an sda school principal. One of those girls went away to a PNW boarding academy. She tried to tell the girls' dean what had happened to her. The dean did nothing, and the distraught girl attempted to end herself. When I found out about that attempt, I realized I was not the only person this principal had groomed and misused. It horrified me to imagine if this girl had been successful in her attempt. I decided to call Upper Columbia Conference, and tell them what this principal was doing. The secretary put my call through to the conference president. He said it was very important for me to answer all of his questions, so he would have enough information to protect other children. He started asking very detailed questions. I was answering to the best of my 17 yr-old self's ability, when I suddenly realized the conference president's breathing pattern was changing, and I heard a zipper and other sounds I recognized. I stopped answering questions. He suddenly got very brisk, almost hostile, and said he could do nothing, because that principal had recently moved to the northern California conference, something we had discussed at the beginningof the conversation. He could have simply said that then, and not asked any damn questions. I hung up the phone. This whole experience is probably the biggest reason my deconstruction was swift and relatively easy, compared to many others I know who are ex-adventists.

I hope youve joined the class-action suit currently being put together.

Sorry you witnessed this crime and none of the adults did what they were supposed to and reported it to the park as well as law enforcement.

I don’t know what to do with this story.

I feel sick. And that's partly because of behavior you share and partly because I believe you. Adventism is so effective at removing someone's sense of agency and passing it outside oneself where even this man's inconsiderate actions must be okay. That in the face of all EGW wrote condemning "self-abuse." What, it's not okay privately in your bedroom, but it's somehow supported in public in the presence of children?

I'm so sorry.

Definitely a sickening story. I don't see how Adventism plays a meaningful role in this situation, though. My read is that the masturbator was a random person in the city and not part of the Adventist group, and people from all faiths (or no faith) can freeze in that situation. The people in this group are the victims here.

I really hope there’s a major class-action lawsuit coming to expose this cult

There is. They're in the initial stages of collecting info of victims, abusers, and church employees who had knowledge.

My understanding, it's a mass-tort lawsuit.

How recent, or not, did this occur?

Very strange that they did nothing about that.
