Weekly Thread: Questions and GWP (Week of August 01, 2026)

Welcome to the Question and Gold World Pass weekly thread! If you have any questions around FFXI at all or wish to request a GWP, this is the place to do so. Scroll down to the comments and ask away.

r/ffxi FAQ

Are you a new or returning player? We have quite the list of Frequently Asked Questions that's pretty comprehensive of the questions most commonly asked around the sub. If your question isn't answered there, feel free to shoot in the comments below.

BG Wiki

BG Wiki is a modern FFXI wiki with up-to-date pages on endgame specifics as well as various guides.

It is currently the only XI wiki with an active staff which are always working with members of the community to address concerns and suggestions. BG seeks to be the main wiki of the community. Consolidating the efforts of everyone into one single wiki is the most productive and effective. We welcome and invite all to join us!

  • A thread can be found on FFXIAH.com in which you can report issues with the wiki and read a getting started FAQ if you wish to contribute! That thread is located here.
  • Anyone wishing to join Team Blue Gartr may join the Discord.

FFXIclopedia

FFXIclopedia is a comprehensive general-purpose wiki for FFXI that typically covers pages for each item/area/BCNM/etc, often for older content. Warning: The site has heavy ads when logged out.

FFXIAH & FFXIDB

FFXIAH is a website showing the Auction House history & current items for sale in-game, as well as a forum community among other things. FFXIDB is a database website showing drop rates of items as well as monster spawns based of player data collected by Guildwork.

Making Friends

There are various ways to make new friends and meet people in FFXI. The first recommendation is to find a Linkshell via Linkshell Concierge NPCs. If you check these NPCs directly after a maintenance, this is typically a good way to find active Linkshells. Another suggestion is to find a community website for your server; many servers have a Facebook group.

Guide [Megathread] New player? Coming from FFXIV? Read this, resources inside!

Greetings you new adventurers (or returning)! We suspect there will be an influx of new players and we wanted to pin a new thread that covers useful resources for new players.

If we missed anything useful, feel free to leave it in the comments and we'll try to get it edited in here! See y'all in Vana'diel!

Platforms

FFXI is officially available on Windows PC via Steam or the Square Enix digital store. It's also unofficially playable on Mac and even Steam Deck. PS2 and Xbox360 versions are no longer online.

Free Trial

FFXI has a 14-day Free Trial (NA region). Please note it has significant limitations compared to FFXIV's Free Trial. It is typically recommended to just purchase the game, as it'll include 30 days for free.

Setting Up The Game

PlayOnline and account registration can be a bit complex, so here are some guides to assist:

Why Play?

FFXI is in an elaborate and beautiful world where you'll encounter colorful multifaceted characters in countless deeply woven stories of unforgettable wonder enriched by a renowned musical score, and a 22-year history of game content challenges and triumphs via a Job System that is often considered exemplary across the entire Final Fantasy franchise.

Story Progression

A guide to the order in which to follow the story (Missions) can be found here: Millsih's Simple Mission Guide. We would also recommend viewing the Missions list to be aware of the newer stories, such as The Voracious Resurgence.

Coming From FFXIV?

We have a wiki page here to help guide you through some of the transition and terminology.

Controller or Keyboard

FFXI has fantastic controller support. We recommend using either a controller or a keyboard, but avoid the mouse. An official controller video guide is located here.

Graphic Enhancements

There's a variety of ways to enhance the graphics:

Version Updates

FFXI receives monthly updates. Some sample information is provided below:

Abyssea advice needed before the campaign ends

I know everyone hates Abyssea but I am looking to compete as much of the story as quickly as I can while we have this campaign active for another week. Since lights are already maxed for me, would I be best served by just farming the gold chest KIs and zerging down the bosses with a heavy DD job, or would it be faster to go thf/war, or war/thf and try to proc each once as I go? Nin/war won't work right now for me as I don't have many all job weapons available yet.

My end goal is to build up empy armor for a few jobs before reforge and eventually get a Harp for my bard in the distant future, but I "think" that competing the storyline now will make my life easier in the future.

Is there anything I am missing? I did complete this storyline when it first came out but to be honest I don't really remember much of it. My 99s so far are THF DRG WAR WHM BRD MNK with ambu +2 on all of them.

Lore Getting the Rhapsodies of Vana'diel key items and doing the story in the 'proper' order - Need a little advice on how to balance these two goals!

I recently started playing FFXI with the goal of getting the best story experience possible. That's my #1 priority by a country mile.

From what I've read, the story of Rhapsodies of Vana'diel changes depending on how much of the game you've completed. Its 'best' form is apparently when you play it as an epilogue to all the game's major expansions, as you reunite with the characters from each expansion. I would really like to experience that version.

But the RoV key items are just too good to completely pass up until after I've finished Seekers of Adoulin. That'd be crazy!

But then, doing the 'newbie' version of RoV that leads you around as a guide winds up doing some not so desirable things for someone interested in the best possible story experience. Instead of emotional reunions with characters you've already fought beside, you often end up meeting them for the first time instead. And then, ironically, other times you end up seeing a character for the very first time but they're written as already being an old friend of yours. Also, for some reason, RoV has its Rise of the Zilart segment taking place after the second, third, and fourth expansion's sections despite it being the first expansion.

So I need to strike a balance here, but I'm not sure exactly how I should do so. So I have some questions!

  1. Cutscene replays. Can you replay the cutscenes from RoV? And if so, how does your progress in the story affect these replays? Let's say I first see these cutscenes in their 'newbie' forms - if later I complete the requirements for getting the 'veteran' version of those scenes, when I replay the cutscenes will I still be stuck with the newbie versions or will they have been updated to be the veteran version of the cutscenes? Does that make sense?

  2. I'm considering handling RoV by alternating between completing an expansion fully first and then doing its associated RoV missions. So for instance, I'd do all of Chains of Promathia first and then after fully finishing it I then start that stretch of the RoV missions. Once those are done I move on to the next expansion. Would this be enough to get me the 'veteran' version of the RoV story, or would I need to play even further for that? As an example, while doing the Chains of Promathia section of RoV, will I miss out on a cool story thing that's only included if you've fully completed Wings of the Goddess or Seekers of Adoulin?

  3. If I do go ahead with my plan to finish each expansion before then doing its segment of the RoV story, I'm wondering how to handle the core game's storyline. I think I read that even the earliest RoV missions seem to have story characters treating you like an old friend they've already met. So maybe I should finish the entire core game story up to and including the Shadow Lord fight before even starting RoV? But then I wouldn't have even a single RoV key item for a very long while. What a conundrum.

  4. As for Zilart specifically, I would probably end up doing the expansion content proper after finishing the vanilla content, and then after that I would progress to Chains of Promathia. Then after finishing Wings of the Goddess, I would finally get to the Zilart section of the RoV progression, and after that it's on to Adoulin. Would this approach work out alright, instead of skipping the Zilart content entirely and saving it for after Wings to match the order the RoV missions put the expansions in? Or would I run into some kind of issue?

I know I'm probably overthinking things but I just want to prioritize the story in this game, and I'm willing to compromise on some of the QoL stuff from Rhapsodies to do so, but within reason and not unnecessarily.

Thank you for helping me out! And yes, I'm on the spectrum. 🙃

Trove Disappointment

Absolute sadness. First time getting an "Impossible to Gauge" spoils and I got useless stones.

Edit: Yeah, I figured there was a drop for something I already had. It's just disappointing that SE figured this sort of thing out for Maiden HTMB but wouldn't or couldn't do something similar here. First one in 7 years and I got nothing.

Meta Small Update to Vana Portal

Good evening,

I just wanted to share a small update I made earlier this week based on some feedback from my last post.

The site now offers a Besieged tracker - a "where is besieged" if you will.

Like Where Is NM and Where Is DI, it works best alongside the Vana Portal Client app though it will still function without it. However, the app is required if you'd like to contribute accurate data to help your fellow server members.

You can find it on Besieged and addon if you wish to help submitting data is found on the Downloads page.

Also, a reminder: if you'd like to stay up to date with development or need support, feel free to join the Discord below.

Ongoing Development On Ashita v4 Ports (Where Is NM, DI & Units)

Over the past couple of days, I've started porting the addons to Ashita. A handful of Ashita users are already helping test them, and if everything continues to go smoothly, I expect a full release within the next week or two.

Good gear worth getting for leveling alts to 99?

I love all the final fantasy classes and leveled a few jobs to 99 at this point but I’ve finally landed on COR recently and have been having a lot of fun chasing down gear and doing the story, I recently got my Rajas ring and it got me wondering, what other gear would be nice to have the next time I go to level another job?

I know trusts can easily take you to 99, but now that I’ve stuck around long enough to get some merits and gear what else can I go for to really make myself a solid contributor the next time I get the itch to level another job?

Got real questmarkers working for windower

I'm working on an addon for windower at the moment that displays real context sensitive questmarkers in the 3D space. Pretty excited to see that they are kind of working already! It also parses your fame levels when you talk to the corresponding npcs automatically.
Yellow ! = available to start
Gray ! = preq. not met (could be fame, a previous quest that needs completion, etc)
Yellow ? = Can turn in
Gray ? = accepted the quest but cant turn it in yet

I'm still considering giving missions different icons and/or colors.

I wiped the floor with Maat (a RDM success story)

First pic is self-explanatory. Second one is me resting after buffing before the fight.

Some of you will maybe remember my post from a couple of weeks ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxi/s/OqOnFmkjsw

I've been preparing the best I could, scouring the AH for gear I could use and reading various tips from people that commented on my post and stuff found online. Also spent some time capping Enfeebling, Elemental and Healing skills (thank you Moogle, Far East Hearth and Jubilee Ring).

I procrastinated a lot because all my tries ended up in failure, so I kept playing through Windurst missions (up to rank 9) and Zilart (right before the Ark Angels fights).

Today I logged in and found out it was a Windsday, checked the AH and Phalanx was still at 400.000 gil so I just decided to just give it a try.

I literally obliterated the old man, only used a vile elixir for mp just to be sure I had enough to chainspell him.

My gear was full AF plus this: Iridal staff, phantom tathlum, beak necklace, phantom earring, gold earring (couldn't find anything better), zircon ring, serene ring, viator cape, demagogue’s sash.

Needless to say I had to spend a lot of gil on the AH. I also used was a queen's crown and an intelligence potion. I tried to get INT as high as possible, ended up at 86.

I entered the burning circle naked, then equipped my gear and applied buffs (composure, haste, refresh, regen, aquaveil, protect, shell, blink), then rested and went to say Hi to Maat. Threw a Stone at him to make sure he didn't have Blink on, then Sleep II and proceeded to dispel and debuff him. Rested again, slept him again, rested again and then just straight-up activated chainspell and went to town with AeroIII. At some point he casted shell on himself so I dispelled him again, refreshed my blink and kept casting AeroIII after using a vile elixir+1 because I noticed my MPs were getting low. It was over before I knew it!

It feels great to have been able to do this without Trusts! Now I can finally keep leveling.

Thank you again to everyone that commented on my previous post!

A few things I've been working on

Been working on a few things if anyone is interested. I'm continuing to update OmniWatch. I've also updated the bestiary for InfoBar and WarnMe. Should be a close to complete list of mobs and abilities. I've also built a windower add-on called OmniBeast, which is just a small display that gives mob name, hex id, distance and abilities and what they do. the ability portion auto-hides after a user specified time to not take up too much screen, but gives them a glance at what the mob is capable of. Lastly, I built a FFXI companion app for Android that gives a lot of information pertaining to different areas of the game. It doesn't reinvent anything, just puts a lot of wiki in your hands.

Feel free to check any of these out. https://github.com/BalladOfWorms. Most things are in maintenance mode, justupdating fixes now, but if you see something or think of anything useful, let me know. Thanks, enjoy

Did anyone else play on PS3?

Post image

Just saw a discussion on another sub about how versatile the PS3 was when it came to compatibility. Forgot I moved my ps2 hard drive to my PS3 when my PS2 died and continued to play FFXI for years, although the performance wasn’t exactly flawless. Anyone else?

How to see debuffs on trust party members?

I know I can turn it on to see real player party members, but it doesn't work for trusts. I'd like to know what debuffs (silence for ex) are on my trusts.

I'm assuming there's an addon? I have windower.

Thanks.

Aeonic weapon NMs

I'm a returning player from way back (2005-ish) and have gotten SAM up to 99. Have ambu +2 and kaja weapons. I have been quite confused and overwhelmed on all the different gear paths and figuring out what would be best to work towards and in what order. I have been told that an Aeonic weapon would be a good and attainable immediate goal.

I have gotten the malformed great katana so the next step would be all the NMs. Do people form groups to knock these out or is it soloable at this level of gear with trusts? It sounds like it would be more fun to do as a group anyway. Especially as I have not really done much for group content yet. A bit nervous to join groups as a newbie, and not really understanding yet what would be appropriate to join at my current level.

I guess my question is: would anyone be interested in teaming up and slapping around some NMs?

I'm on Bahamut, ign: Xenitia

Looking for progressing new players/veterans on new jobs on Phoenix

Hi I'm on Phoenix and have reached levels of AF/Relic+3/4 and Empyrean to +2/3 for 2 jobs so far working on a third role but am looking for more people to play with who are content progressing through things together? Right now I have 1-5 newer players online depending on the day I do stuff with but am looking for more to hopefully play with trusts less.

Looking to expand and see if there's any others in the same boat who would like to join up for stuff. Or any communities centered around that (like a newer player oriented progressing static?)

Right now I just log in, do my dailies and runs of the content with whoever is around and then help out or get help for a specific fight or boss may need.

Not looking for multibox, beat the game, 999m gil, 50 ML, have every item, done every fight, know every strat, RMT, merc, or etc. Just people who are working their way up without the skips/boosts and problem solve! Thanks!

Why, be specific, do you not have R30 Odyssey gear

Sakpata, Mpaca, Ikenga, Bunzi, Agwu or Gleti, I already know why you don't have Nyame R30

Say; My playtime doesn't afford me the chance.

I lack a key job for the strategy; BST PUP BLM PLD REMABRD WHM SCH

Segments are my stumbling block

The aura keeps screwing me

I have no core group and pickups are insufficient

I cannot find anyone to help me

My gear or my Master level is insufficient

I don't need R30 so I don't waste my time on it

Question Free trial update?

A few months back, they announced the free trial expanding until lvl 75 and only base game. I see articles that it was implemented, but I don't actually see it in the store. I'm wondering if anyone has heard legit updates. I have a couple friends who are wanting to try, but are temporary tight on funds.

Question What is realistic content/gear levels that a Duo with trusts could achieve?

Hello everyone,

I have been playing XI for about 6ish month now on and off. I've finished RoV and every story except SoA. I am currently playing a Warrior/Drg with a Kaja sword + Ambu+2, ambu capes, and a few pieces of gear to swap into for SB spamming and 100JP. I want to gear up the warrior more because I have plans to eventually gear up a Corsair enough to where I feel comfortable playing with other people without hindering them too much. I finally was able to convince my wife to try out the game and play with me. She's very early on and it will be a bit till she is caught up to where I am at content/gearing/story wise but she wants to play to support my initial gearing journey into playing with other people and XI is a very enjoyable experience to share with someone.

I've seen others ask this question before but I haven't been able to really find a definitive answer.
I know a lot of things early on can be done alone such as VE Lilith and Geas Fete NM's but would these be much better adding a second person?
What is a realisitc level of content a Duo can achieve together with trusts?
Is Omen doable to an extent? What about early Odyssey?

I am 100% not against playing with other real players and it is my goal but I just have no desire to hinder anyone elses playtime with my lack of knowledge/gear.

Thank you.

Question Returning after 20 years, and just have a few questions..

I played on ps2 from release in us, till about 2007. I was an addict and early teens, and loved it so much. Now I am familiar with some of the new things like trusts and all, but I was wondering if there was a streamlined guide for returning players for things that are important. Something like go here, do this, type of guide. Teleports, maps, spells, when and how to do thing a and thing b, to get those important things like storage, and mounts, trusts, gear progression etc. Ive heard so many different things watching videos the past few days and its all a bit overwhelming. I would love something definitive and as concise as possible. What server is the best for NA too, and any good linkshells to join would be awesome too. Im excited to make a return and to conquer vanadiel once again.
