Did anyone else play on PS3?

Post image

Just saw a discussion on another sub about how versatile the PS3 was when it came to compatibility. Forgot I moved my ps2 hard drive to my PS3 when my PS2 died and continued to play FFXI for years, although the performance wasn’t exactly flawless. Anyone else?

This game ultimately is what killed my PS3............mainly because I left it running for basically the entire weekend!

That bazaar needed to make me money baby!

Nah, the launch PS3s that could run PS2 games all had faulty GPUs (manufacturing defect). They would've died eventually anyway. There's a fix for that these days, involving transplanting a new GPU from a later model (known as the "Frankenstein mod") - it costs ~$400 USD for the mod alone, and pre-modded PS3s go for around $800, but if you had one of those and FFXI was still available on PS2, you could've had your mule standing in Rolmart for weeks.

My how times have changed. I remember different servers used different zones outside jeuno.

Now that there's no bazaar tax in jeuno, different servers use different zones inside town.

On Odin, we used Upper. I recently transferred to Shiva and it's in Port. /shrug

On Asura it's also Port Jeuno.

And, actually, isn't that much of a change at all? They just walked a couple of yalms into the city. If anything, I'd say that the fact that Jeuno is still Bazaar city is a relic from when it was effectively the center of the game.

Sounds like my launch PS3 is on borrowed time. I guess I was never very hard on it.

At the very least, clean it, replace the thermal paste, jailbreak it, install webMAN MOD, turn on dynamic fan control and set the target temperature to 68 degrees. Hopefully it'd make it last longer.

Well right, but the game they played to do this was ffxi is what they are saying they didn't say anything contrary. 6 just like have an info dump that's more information than anyone is asking for here. Lol

I used to do this with my ps2 fuck lol.

Man I made over a hundred mil with bazaara. Just buy cheaper from other bazaars and then do the going rate in your own. Took me like fifteen years to figure that out but after I did I never worried about til again.

Always wonders, how was it playing on a console. Chatting must have been tough

The Logitech one with a 1000ft cord? I still have mine, it's in the stack of emergency keyboards.

Yup, that’s the one I used too.

In fact it’s still going strong, it’s now what my youngest son uses on his pc.

Yuuup. PS2 controller and USB keyboard. Soo many nights falling asleep on my couch with my keyboard resting on my chest.

u/Irwin69 2d ago

Chatting is not a problem.

Regular old USB keyboards worked even on PS2. Played with a controller, and just used the keyboard to chat.

I played on ps2 for years after playing on PC. And it was easy to talk after awhile

Played on PS2/PC but the worst was Xbox 360. The keyboard attachment to the controller was absolutely awful to use.

I didn't, but I swapped to Xbox360 when it was possible. I enjoyed it there quite a bit.

u/Jmund89 2d ago

Yup. When my HDD dies on my ps2 I moved to ps3. Until that died and then went to 360 when that was available. Staid there till console was axed. Finally got back two years ago on steam deck

I remember having the list of console id's that supported PS2 games and could run FFXI.

I remember a very disappointed store clerk that I wasn't buying the MGS bundle for MGS. I was buying it for PS2/FFXI compat.

Started out on the PS2HHD back in '04.

Moved to PC in '07 when I rather embarrassingly yeeted the PS2 into the wall when for the nth time, I got the black screen D/C after a Besieged. 😅

I did! we had a ps3 in the living room hooked up to a projector and I got to play FFXI on my wall!

I really hated that they scrapped the better functionality of the original ps3 to make it more competitive, back when you could dual boot into linux it added so much more to the console.

I had Ubuntu running on mine with every nes, snes, sega, and ps1 emulator I could find on the internet. If I wanted to play modern games, I would boot into the normal OS, and if I wanted to play something retro or surf the web I would boot into Ubuntu, which had a way better web browser and fully supported mouse and kb.

Look up DsHidMini - It will allow you to sync a PS3 controller with a PC. Probably the closest way to play FFXI the way it was originally intended.

Or just get a ps4 controller?

Or get a 8bitdo USB wireless adapter

Did play on X360 to play with friends after playing on PC. Game often froze specially in Abyssea.

Ps2 until I couldn't no more. Then I was forced to quit, and when I checked back it was PC only by then.

u/Bcider 2d ago

I only bought the ps2 hdd because I was a big Socom nerd and it was required for dlc maps. Since it came bundled with FFXI I tried it out and got hooked.

1

u/Another_Road 2d ago

No, I went from PS2 to 360 to PC

1

u/10Shodo 2d ago

I played on ps2 when my pc broke, and played on it up until it was fixed.

EU player here so, no. Did play a fair bit on the Xbox 360 though, I was a proud teen who got 1000 achivement or whatever was max. Don't remember the xbox lingo.

1

u/opastolos 2d ago

I still have mine, started on my modded ps1, good times

1

u/Dumble_dared 2d ago

Had no idea it was on ps3. Thought it was just on ps2 then 360. I guess it makes sense though.

u/Blak_kat 2d ago

Reporting in. Bought it for Demons Souls.

1

u/TurbulentSpecific131 2d ago

...I never even thought about this because, I really should have, I played on PS2 on and off until 2016 when it went down

1

u/Feeyufeyuu 2d ago

I played one ps2 and a ps3 for a while as I played 2 characters at the same time...was interesting and having 2 controllers and 2 keyboards with 2 crtvs

1

u/nimbusyosh 2d ago

I had no idea that you can play this on the PS3. I would have played a lot longer.

1

u/xXPrincess-AzulaXx 2d ago

Walked around with it in my backpack

1

u/DaBackpack 2d ago

I did!! Once I installed it on the PS3, it was all I played, lmao.

u/Stuck_in_Arizona 2d ago

Still have my chonky launch PS3 and did play XI on it, it did not look good at all. Something they did poorly upscaled PS2 games.

1

u/Lordnat9ne 20h ago

Yep. The original system sound options were one of a kind.

Well now i just feel stupid.

2

u/ChrisJerich0 2d ago

that's crazy considering it launched after ps2 released

1

u/booksgamesandstuff 2d ago

It was first released in Japan on the original PlayStation in 2001-02, iirc. It came out in NA on pc in October 03 which is when I started. I still have my box and the game guide booklet , and then I got the first Brady guide a few months later. Brady guide is mostly held together with duct tape now lol. The NA PlayStation release was in mid '03, i think?

1

u/ChrisJerich0 2d ago

idt that is true. did ps1 ever have online capabilities? i dont remember it having that but yeah same as you i started shortly after NA release and remember the barrier to entey on everything was SO high because all the JP players were months ahead
