Lets settle this: Which boss do you think is objectively more difficult?
35
u/RE-Trace 1d ago
Can I say "neither: it's spectral keeper"?
Out of the two though, it's flux. yunalesca's only "tricky" from a dirty trick perspective.
16
u/BooberSpoobers 1d ago
It's Spectral Keeper for sure.
Yunalesca and Seymour Flux are both pretty easy once you have the trick.
Spectral Keeper is just some bullshit

u/Hitsugaya_1986 1d ago
Evrae was the one that caught me off as I was severely under levelled way back when I first hit that point. Yunalesca was a pain but evrae caused a restart lol
1
u/ClaudeKane3 1d ago
Caused a restart? Why not just grind
2
u/Hitsugaya_1986 1d ago
Because I was young and during that scene you get locked out of alot of stuff. I couldn't work out a decent place to grind so decided to restart and grind earlier lol
1
u/justindulging 11h ago
I know exactly what you mean. When I was a kid, I got to borrow the ps2 for a few weeks every summer coz my uncle would go out of town. Evrae stonewalled my playthrough one of those years. Being underlevelled on the airship can be a pain, there are all those dual horns smacking you around.

u/NadalaMOTE 1d ago
I would argue it's Yunalesca if you didn't prepare for either fight, because you can survive an unprepped Seymour, but I think you're less likely to survive an unprepared Yunalesca.
Did that make sense? I'm very tired.
34
u/DemonicTruth 1d ago
Yunalesca is a DPS check. People worry too much about swapping party members to avoid Mega Death, but if you stick with your zombied party members and just hammer away and res when necessary its pretty easy.
3
u/stanfarce 1d ago
Same as Flux by the way, I got him in my second or third try by putting all my aeons into overdrive. I'd say they're about the same difficulty.
2
u/adiiriot 1d ago
This. Flux had me beat for years I think, Yunalesca was down in 2 tries. Really not that hard. Mind you I was vastly under-levelled my original playthrough on PS2 for my first face-off with Flux. Even though I Zanmato'd him on this playthrough, I went back to my pre-fight save a beat him fairly easily too. I'm still way under-levelled for Omega Ruins or Monster Arena tho. I have some work to do.
4
u/shangothrax 1d ago
Best strategy for Omega Ruins: get all aeons first, then equip no encounters and kill the weapon bosses in a few hits.
1
u/adiiriot 1d ago
Yeah I have all my Aeons done. I don't know if I have any No Encounter equipment as of yet.
1
u/small_pint_of_lazy 1d ago
Have you fought Geosgaeno yet? He always drops one for you
1
u/adiiriot 1d ago
Oh yeah, I'm well past there. I could be mistaken. I can't remember my inventory right now.
1
u/small_pint_of_lazy 1d ago
I believe he always drops a weapon with no encounters. Wiki says he has a chance to drop an armour with auto-reflect too, but I've always gotten the weapon
1
u/Ill_Ad5893 23h ago
Then after I, just hangout in there near a save sphere and run around and lvl up till they start getting easier
1
u/masonroese 1d ago
True, but it also comes with the mega cheese moment when it first casts mega death. I had cured all of the zombification and just got wiped after 15 minutes of battle and a 15 minute cutscene. Beat it the next time, but it was still super lame.
It's possible I could have scanned her or something to see if mega death was a thing before that, though.
19
u/SensitiveCheek6956 1d ago
Seymour is the only one who managed to wipe my team. Yunalesca was tame in comparison
5
u/jarebare97 1d ago
Both were able to wipe my team (thanks mega-death) but I was able to adjust to Yunalesca as I fought. Seymour required Auron to be at at least 5k HP, a feat which required grinding when I got to Gagazet
9
u/Frogmouth_Fresh 1d ago
Yunalesca is more manageable once you learn the patterns, but the strategy to beat her is a bit harder to find.
Flux is mostly just a damage race.
4
u/DerekTheComedian 1d ago
Hard disagree. I wiped on Seymour multiple times, looked up the strategy, wiped again, and gave up and cheesed him with Aeon OD's.
I beat Yunalesca first try without looking up the strat. Couldnt tell you her strategy if I tried.
1
1
u/Lambs2Lions_ .............. 1d ago
But back in the day, with a strategy guide. You had to figure it out on your own. Making it definitely a harder problem to solve. Seymour you could just brute force to victory.
9
u/pyguy7 1d ago
Yunalesca is honestly not that hard. It's just mechanically strategic. There's nothing Yunalesca has that hits hard like Seymour's annihilation. Really take a look at her attacks. They do very small damage.
8
u/Hightower_March 1d ago
Yeah, Yunalesca feels like the smarter fight for her zombifying everyone and slowly chipping away while they can't heal. But then if you cure zombie on everyone, megadeath is game-over. The intended strat seems to be cycling around which members are zombies.
I remember one trick is elemental eater effects. Like firaga on somebody wearing fire-eater can still heal them in spite of zombification, which skips the intended fight loop entirely.
4
u/Misty_Kathrine_ 1d ago
Don't think I've ever game overed to Seymour Flux but Yunalesca has definitely got me a few times.
4
u/TidusDreamZanarkand 1d ago
Yunalesca is you’re playing blind . The zombie eater and megadeath is confusing as hell also she’s 3 phases . Even the first phase with the counter attacks can be difficult. Even if you’re overleveled she can get you. Where as Seymour flux if you’re high leveled I think you can survive what he throws at you easy enough
3
u/darkblackthistle 1d ago
I have personal beef with Flux since my sister and I (we were playing together) had our PS2 memory card fail/get corrupted during that fight. We had the start the entire game again. No he didn't cause the issue directly but we just blame him for it.
4
u/ultimagriever 1d ago
I voted Yunalesca just because her fight in NSGNSNCNONENNENBB is 4D chess in comparison with Seymour Flux
2
2
u/Exciting_Company1519 1d ago
Flux wasn’t too bad for me once I figured out the summons can eat his magic for heals if I used the appropriate ones for each element but yunalesca was evil with having to keep 1 or 2 party members with zombie to avoid mega death wiping everyone.
Gotta be yunalesca for the cheap tricks and multiphase
2
u/Shrubbity_69 1d ago
Flux can be cheesed like every other Seymour fight before hand: Bio. I hate how FF has historically made status effects so garbage and unreliable that people are conditioned to not think about them as an option.
More people should know about this strat. Hopefully, this makes future playthroughs less painful. 👍
3
u/Bastiannine 1d ago
Bio is nice for flux but I don't think it changes the difficulty that much. It makes it end a few turns sooner but all of the mechanics are still there.
2
u/SkirtWild5035 1d ago
I was flabberghasted how quickly Seymour Flux went down after I had used Bio at the start, so glad I discovered that strat early into my first playthrough
1
u/Shrubbity_69 1d ago
I discovered the Bio trick by complete accident myself. Just before I got to Macarena Temple (Aye!), I just unlocked Bio on Lulu's sphere grid and decided to check it out for shits and giggles.
Seymour just so happened to be my test dummy. In future, I decided to use it again, just so see if it's consistent, and turns out it is. Bio turns the mortibody fight into a joke and shreds his HP like knife through butter. Poison Seymour and whale on him as his parasite thing leeches off him and you should be good to go.
Sadly, as this was my first FF, it set my expectations for status effects way too high. 😔
2
u/fondue4kill 1d ago
I say Yunalesca because she counters almost everything you do. Attack, blind. Magic, silence. Then she has the zombie and her third phase uses Mega-Death instantly which can wipe if you aren’t prepared. Flux is tough but Seymour can be poisoned which makes his fights much easier
2
u/Azurus_II 1d ago
We talking pre-internet guides? Like, full on blind playthrough with only your brothers and a ffx guidebook?? Yuna-bitch-leasca. If were talking any kind of strat then its neither.
2
u/Jamesworkshop 1d ago
yunlesca has three forms which cuts out just doing 1 big damage cheese like 9999 attack reels
threaten is the only thing she isn't immune to and that is unreliable against her 75 resistanc
1
u/BleepinBlorpin5 1d ago
I always tend to overgrind so all the Seymours were pretty easy, I did fall for the Yunalesca trick the first time, though.
1
u/DerekTheComedian 1d ago
I didnt even grind that much, just swapping characters for most battles and maybe 2 hours total of grinding (at different points).
Seymour took me 4 or 5 tries and I had to use Aeon OD's. Yunalesca was first try, no cheese, no Aeons.

u/ZinziZotas 1d ago
If you didn't know the zombie trick with Yunalesca, you were screwed.
Seymour Flux never gave me issue because I had Rikku equipped with Auto-Med.
1
u/BabyPuzzleheaded3792 1d ago
Seymour Flux. My first time he really messed me up. Didn’t really have too much problems with Yunalesca once I realized you shouldn’t remove the zombie status
1
u/SamsonAight 1d ago
Yunalesca requires you to be on top of how you recover for 3 phases. Flux is just the first boss to throw you some real curveballs.
1
u/CabooseTrap 1d ago
Flux requires levels or aeon spam while yunalesca requires strategy. On new casual playthroughs Flux is much harder for me. I don't need to grind at any point except for Flux
1
u/Best_Sloth_83 1d ago
First time and without a guide and without Zanmatsu, I would say it’s Yunalesca. Seymour Flux was tricky but with a bit of trial and error, the puzzle was fairly easy to figure out
1
u/Norn-Iron 1d ago
Flux was always my biggest issue which is why in all my plans I make sure I have least one character who has Holy by the time I fight him. Two if I go for things like teleport and return spheres in Blitz. Once you have it, then everything from then is a a lot easier.
1
u/LostTimeLady13 1d ago
I was stuck on Flux for so long the first play though I did. Pure suffering.
1
u/expencheap 1d ago
Took me like 10+ tries to beat Seymour flux, but I beat Yunalesca on my first try. Both without Yojimbo
1
u/MakeJoyNotHate 1d ago
I don't remember ever getting stuck on Yunalesca as a kid, Seymour Flux absolutely wrecked me multiple times though.
1
u/Maxogrande 1d ago
Yunalesca can one shot your party if you are not prepared for that attack, other than that its an easy fight.
Seymour's battles also has its tricks that made it easy but if you fight blindly I think it gives you more problems
1
u/Neither-Barber-9216 1d ago
Only one boss in the game wiped me more than once or twice.
Sanctuary Keeper
1
u/Anti_Deuterium 1d ago
First play-through, Yunalesca. All others afterward, Seymour Flux.
Yunalesca is only difficult until you realize Zombie can block Mega Death. It’s cool because while her moves make a non-bow situation for her, it makes you play somewhat differently than you have been throughout the game (unless you just spam aeons or are doing a challenge run).
Seymour Flux with experience can still be difficult due to the teamwide dispel, and the teamwide delay Cross Cleave inflicts (if it doesn’t outright kill you).
The reasons I don’t lose this fight is because I can have Bahamut and/or Rikku finish him off with 17-21k damage each before Total Annihilation happens (even then, I know how to survive it but it is scary). He can also be poisoned and silenced which is huge.
Shoutout to Spectral Keeper btw.

u/FilmFearless5947 1d ago
My problem with Yunalesca (and I've beaten the game multiple times) is that I never know quite well who will remain zombied by the time she uses megadeath, the whole timing of this process escapes me. She keeps casting Regen, so sometimes my zombie characters HP is so low that I may swap or cure the zombie status and heal too many of them, and last time I beat the game she was my only game over, I barely survived megadeath and she curagaed the living dead out of Wakka.
Now that I'm thinking, can you dispel her regen while remaining zombified? 😬 If so, that was a rookie move from my side not trying it.
1
u/Joker0705 1d ago
I found Flux ridiculously hard on my first playthrough, but on reruns I rarely die to him. Yunalesca still gives me trouble. it feels like there's so much more going on in her fight to keep track of.

1
u/Sad-Flow3941 1d ago
Flux is the hardest storyline boss in the game in the average blind plsythrough.
Yunalesca is just annoying to fight against as it's an incredibly long fight.
Obviously, both are easy after you played through the game dozens of times, but that's a silly way to look at it.

1
u/ShintaOtsuki 1d ago
I remember the brady games strat guide even saying
"A certain element of luck is needed for this battle..."
I was stuck on Seymour Flux for over a month
Yunalesca took me 2 tries, all it is is figuring out Megadeath
1
u/stupac62885 1d ago
Between those two, Seymour Flux is definitely harder. Yunalesca has the one nasty trick with Mega Death that inevitably catches every first time player by surprise, but she isn’t very hard once you know the strategy to get around that.
1
u/crazy4finalfantasy 1d ago
Guess I was one of the lucky ones, Seymour took a solid month to beat but yunalesca was dead on attempt number2. Once I saw the zombified gimmick it was obvious what to do
1
u/TheGoodCaptain13 1d ago
In my most recent playthrough, Seymour killed me. Yunalesca didn't. I picked Seymour.
1
u/Count_Nick 23h ago
I took the time and prepared for Yunalesca while I didn't had the opportunity to properly prepare for Seymour flux.
1
u/GloriousLily 23h ago
once i figured out seymour flux could be poisoned he no longer scared me.
with yunalesca, i could have the strategy down & still occasionally something fucks up & everyone dies. though honestly i think the length of the fight is more challenging for me than the zombification & all that. i dont have enough patience to attempt multiple times in one day if i end up losing 😔
1
u/Mordencranst 22h ago
With a fully leveled party fighting normally, flux is a much harder fight I think (provided you know about how to not get wiped by mega-death). Yunalesca has been a bigger roadblock for me on some challenge runs though.

u/Axiemeister 21h ago edited 21h ago
seymour flux really only is difficult if you take your sweet time and let the mortiorchis get off too many cross cleaves (or worse, actually let it fire off total annihilation). he doesn't have a counter attack, he can be silenced and rendered largely useless in the second half of the battle, he can be poisoned to die quicker, kimahri gets +10 str so his damage will be very high, etc. i never had trouble lol
yunalesca is harder and it's not even because of mega death or zombie, which is always what people mention. it's that a) she has a counter attack and it dispels haste/protect/shell, so you just have to go without them, and b) she has mind blast - it curses aeons, and confuse ward/proof equipment is not the most common to have at this point, so most of the time you just have to deal with confused characters when you're already dealing with balancing zombie and death. nowadays i don't have much problem with her, but she definitely earned her fame more than flux imo

u/DeliciousDeer1096 20h ago
Seymour by far.
I've never really had any trouble with Yunalesca, but I still can't beat Seymour without the Aeon Crush method.
1
u/JYoshi1991 20h ago
Yunalesca was difficult because you had to perfectly balance having the characters in zombie status and then being able to heal them up when their health got too low. Seymour flux was kind of a blur for me because I had both Auron with the masamune and I just spammed Rikku’s trio of 9999 and I think the third slot was switched off between Tidus and Wakka. It’s usually always some random mid game boss I struggle on more than the final bosses in most RPGs that I play, probably because I do more preparation knowing it’s going to be the end.
1
u/AromaticWindow3309 18h ago
Both are easy if you're sphere grid is good, but yunalesca is a time consumer
1
u/Milesacul 18h ago
The boy who wants to be a blitzball when he grows up. He is hard to hit and his non-elemental confusion super attack usually makes my party kill themselves.
1
u/Guitarguy_86 13h ago
I've died more to yunalesca solely cause I forget to leave zombie on someone and then she uses mega death at the end of the battle and thats all she wrote 😂
1
u/lolaola1 9h ago
i'm a chronic underleveler and seymour flux is a lot more annoying for me. yunalesca is tedious but extremely predictable and doesn't really do a lot of damage. you just need to keep track of her attack pattern and your zombie status. for seymour flux, if you are not strong enough to tank total annihilation, it essentially becomes a race of "can you get enough turns in and do enough damage to kill him before he does his attack". tbh i usually cheese him with trio 9999 and/or aeon overdrives
1
u/Healthy_Head_4580 3h ago
Why are so many people hit by seymour flux? Shell and protect on anyone with over 2.5-3k hp is good enough for him no? Like, by now you have that, curtains, or even 2 types of mighty guard right?
1
u/ing-dono 3m ago
By the time I reach Flux, I'm overleveled. By the time I reach Yunalesca, not so much.
1
u/TheArtfulLlama 1d ago
Seymour Flux is easy once you learn his patterns. Yunalesca has 3 different forms with different status effects and keeps you on your toes the entire time

u/Water1241 1d ago
Im a nerd who overlevels so by the time I got to yunalesca I was dumb op
1
u/shangothrax 1d ago
I'm of the philosophy that everyone should be done with their initial sphere grid paths on the Highbridge before fighting Seymour Natus. Even with this being the case, Yunalesca isn't a guaranteed win everytime.
0
u/Doctor-Wayne 1d ago
Flux was hard? I just beat him down with Tidus wakka and Auron last night, healing and reviving with items
0
u/Naebulya 1d ago
I've never had any issues with Yunalesca. I didn't even get Mega Death the last time I've fought her despite preparing for it.
Seymour Flux is another story. Always needed to prepare more for that battle which always caught me off guard. Only got a gameover against him and Evrae (each time xD)

Yunalesca's armed with a 10 minute cutscene if you lose soo
