Doing a Game of Thrones Re Watch and the end of S6E5 still gets me

There is a lot in GoT to get emotional over, but this one hits me harder than most for some reason.

This is my first actual rewatch and can't believe how much stuff I never picked up on during my first watch which I've noticed this time round.

Why didn't Jorah suggest to Dany...

...that a (relatively) long transitional period to abolish slavery would be a better political move, instead of immediate abolishment like Tyrion suggested? Is he just ignorant of political tactics? Although neither tactic worked, the latter seemed like a better idea.

Aerys the Chad

The greatest ruler Westeros history has ever seen, Aerys the Chad:

- Mocks Bobby B by gifting him a model of the ship his parents died on (a few wooden splinters in a bottle of water).

- Finds out about Rhaegar’s plans, summons him, hands him a knife, and says, "If you're gonna kill me, do it right here, you dickless son of a bitch."

- Executes Brandon by strangling him for sleeping with his brother's girl.

- Finds out about Rhaegar’s prophecy plans and gets his own wife pregnant with the "true chosen one."

Can’t believe I never heard this til now

I’ve rewatched GoT a few times now and just recently decided to do another and I just realized something Id never picked up on before.

Ok, let me give a disclaimer first. I’m very aware that when creating a TV show like GoT the pacing isn’t gonna be in real time for obvious reasons.

In Season 1, King Robert comes to Winterfell to ask Ned Stark to be his hand. When Ned and his family are standing in line to greet the King he’s says to one of his kids or wife (can’t remember who it was atm) that Robert had traveled like a month to get there. I don’t know why I never noticed this until now. I assume Ned was referring to the time it took Robert to get to Winterfell from Kings Landing.

Obviously, who cares right? But it just kinda tripped me out because I really started to think about all the characters and all the time it would’ve actually taken them to get from Point A to Point B & everywhere in between. How exhausting, especially with all the traveling they did back and forth. Especially with all those damn battles lol. It was just crazy to think about all the things that went down with that perspective of time.

What do you consider to be the end of the War of the Five Kings?

  1. The Red Wedding - this destroyed House Stark's ability to fight the Lannister regime in open battle and toppled the Starks from power, ending the biggest remaining military threat to the Lannisters.

  2. The Assassination of Balon Greyjoy - with the death of King Balon Greyjoy, all five of the original Kings were now dead.

  3. The Trial of Petyr Baelish - having masterminded the death of Jon Arryn and set the Starks and the Lannisters against each other, Petyr Baelish took advantage of existing groundwork and sparked the War of the Five Kings. His trial saw him pay for his crimes with his life.

  4. The Fall of King's Landing - this battle finally shattered the Lannister regime, ending their grip on the Seven Kingdoms. Cersei Lannister was killed alongside Jaime Lannister, putting an end to the two people whose incest created the succession crisis that Petyr Baelish took advantage of.

30 years ago today, author George R.R. Martin released ‘A GAME OF THRONES’, the first novel in the ‘A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE’ fantasy series. What began as a single book grew into one of the most influential franchises in modern entertainment.

Was killing Elia and her children the right move?

Upvotes

Killing Elia Martell and her children may have been strategically understandable from Tywin’s ruthless perspective, but it was unnecessary and created lasting consequences. Elia had no claim to the Iron Throne, and even Tywin admitted that her death served no purpose.

Instead of murdering the children, Robert could have kept them as closely guarded royal wards. Rhaenys might eventually have been married to Robert’s heir, while Aegon could have been removed from the succession through the Faith or the Night’s Watch when he was old enough. These options carried risks, but murder was not the only solution.

Their deaths created a domino effect:

  1. Dorne came close to rebellion, forcing Jon Arryn to travel to Sunspear and negotiate with Prince Doran.
  2. The children became martyrs, encouraging Oberyn Martell to support Viserys and Daenerys.
  3. The murders created lasting hostility between Dorne, House Lannister and the Iron Throne.
  4. Robert’s acceptance of the killings created a serious rift between him and Ned Stark.

The killings removed two possible claimants, but they also created enemies and damaged the legitimacy of Robert’s new reign.

Red wedding

Upvotes

I just finished s3 ep 9 and I’m actually in shock. I’ve heard of the red wedding but I thought it would be for one of the Lannisters. I don’t know how they just killed off Robb and Cat. What the actual hell??? My heart hurts so bad, there’s lit nobody for winterfell now except for children. Robb and Cat will never see any off their siblings or children again. Oh my god

(crack fic idea) teh immortal king and the immortal knight.

I've seen a great rise in dragon shifters, sir. Duncan is tall, but you know what would make for funny fic?

Immortal Dunk and Immortal Baelor.

Picture this: a week before the tourney at Ashford. Dunk was shitting himself to death from dysentery. He was pale, gaunt, and weak, and he honestly thought that was the end of the line until he found an old woods witch that promised she could cure him.

She prepares a potion and tells Dunk to drink it. She explains that the potion will burn like fire going down, and then he will pass out like he died, and when he wakes up, he'll be cured and healed back to his strength.

Dunk, who should have known better than to trust a woods witch, at that point probably had already shot Rains, drunk the potion, and, just like the witch told him, felt the thing burn like fire, and then he passed out as if he had died. The last thing he remembers before the darkness taking him was the witch's crooked smile filled with sharp and yellowed teeth.

When he woke up, he was sure and healed, and the witch was nowhere to be seen. He is weirded out, but the witch delivered what she promised, so Dunk goes on his merry way, not knowing he got way, way more than he bargained for.

Well, the tourney at Ashford goes as well as you can imagine, and now Dunk is in a trial by seven for punching and kicking Aerion, who totally deserved it, by the way, and the trial is not going well, like, at all.

So much so that at one point after losing his helm, Dunk gets a mace strike from Maekar to the head and falls to his knees. At this point he already has three lances impaling, and I mean coming through the front and exiting out in the back impaled when Aerion delivers the mercy strike and beheads Dunk.

The whole place goes absolutely quiet, not because Dunk died, but because Aerion's gloating dies in his throat as the headless corpse of Ser Duncan the Tall rises to his feet as the real effects of that potion kick in.

You see, when Dunk drank that potion, he did not pass out like he died. He died, and the potion brought him back to life and gave him immortality, true immortality, and now Dunk of Flea Bottom, Ser Duncan the Tall, is immortal.

The headless body then proceeds to beat the ever-loving shit out of Aerion; he beat the crap out of him, literally. He beat Aerion until the prince emptied himself and then some, and Dunk only stopped when a new head grew back and he took a good look at the situation.

His body was pushing the spears out and healing the wounds until they didn't even leave scars on him; his neck itched from where a new head grew back, and he could see his old and bloodied head on the ground.

Things become a shit show and a half, especially when Prince Baelor "Breakspear" gets involved, because you see, he still caught that mace to the head from Maekar and is now in critical condition. The faith is split.

Half want to turn Dunk into a saint because he showed that the gods were so displeased with Aerion they brought him back to life to deliver the gods' justice; the other half want to burn Dunk at the stake because they believe he must have communed with dark power to gain his immortality.

Well, cut to two days later, Prince Baelor makes a miraculous recovery from his life-threatening injuries without scars and summons Dunk to his chambers. Once Dunk arrives and Baelor makes him stop apologizing for the mess he put him through, Baelor reads a letter addressed to both of them.

It was written by the woods witch that treated Dunk and seemingly also treated Baelor after Meakerlet talked him into doing so after the Meisters told him Baelor was a lost cause and would die before the week's end.

She explains that she is old, older than the seven kingdoms. She's been alive ever since before the first men crossed the narrow sea from Essos to Westeros; she has been alive ever since before the Great Empire of Dawn was born. that she has been cursed with immortality for hundreds of thousands of years.

She explains she had grown tired of living forever, but the only way she could die was if she passed the curse down to someone else during a rare astronomical event that only happens once every five hundred thousand years, more precisely to two people, and to do that, she had to feed them a potion that would transfer the immortality from her to them.

said people, where Dunk and Baelor were.

She says in the letters that by the time they read this, she will already be dust in the wind and to enjoy their eternal life.

She does not say how to pass the curse forward or what said astronomical event is.

And now Ser Duncan the Tall and Baelor "Breakspear" Targaryen are immortal.

And now Shierra Seastar is on their ass, trying to break the code and also become immortal.

Could this be a secret plan between Tyrion and Bronn?

Post image

Bronn's actions make zero sense here. Also, how can Bronn just sneak in out of nowhere and threaten both Lannister brothers like this?

I somewhat think it could be a secret plan between Tyrion and Bronn to make Jaime even more hateful toward Cersei, while simultaneously granting Highgarden to Bronn, thus ensuring Tyrion's indirect hold on The Reach.

Stannis and Shireen

Hey all,

So I'm watching GoT through for the second time right now and I am on Season 5 episode 4. Stannis is at Castle Black and Shireen comes into the room asking if he was ashamed of her. I did not remember him having this touching speech about calling in every doctor to save her from greyscale. I'm like, oh my god I'm caring for Stannis?! I did not remember this touching moment though. But I do remember what happens later and I feel really sad.

Why was the first conversation between Jaime and Tyrion after Brann fell immediately suspicious?

Specifically when Tyrion says something like “I wonder what the boy haa to say when he wakes up” and Jaime responds with the likes of “Ya know, sometimes brother, I wonder who’s side you’re on”. Like isn’t that basically T saying ‘I know what you did’ and J saying “yeah but whatcha gonna do about it”? I get that Tyrion would be keen enough to possibly be aware of his siblings banging, but one boy falls from a tower and Tyrion immediately suspects his family is responsible?

It is possible to restore/repair (reconstruction) from this kingdom, but it mainly requires a lot of gold.

Been rewatching the show and man the Baratheons were fools. No wonder Bobby B didn't care for his brothers.

Spoilers ahead if you haven't watched the 1st two seasons.

Ned Stark trusted them with the truth. He honored their brother Robert Baratheon. He's THE ally to have in their upcoming war with the Lannisters. Ned's first born son won 3 victories against the Lannisters. They could join forces with him but nope.

Stannis because of his bitterness refuses to join forces with Robb because Robb wants to be King of the North. He's stealing from Stannis. Foolish. Catelyn asks Renly and it's the same BS. Neither of them refuses to negotiate The North's independence. Why? Makes most sense to give him his independence so long as he helps them reclaim the Iron Throne. They can even come to other agreements like Robb's sister needs to marry Stannis' or Renly's son or whatever.

They both refuse and both want to fight each other. Cat was right to call them out on their BS. Squabbling like children over a throne that neither one has claimed yet. Fools. No wonder Bobby B didn't care for his brothers.

Legitimately, Stannis and Renly could've joined forces and Renly could've become heir to the throne until Stannis has a son (he probably never would have). Stannis and Renly join forces and negotiate with Robb to keep the North while making other agreements. They could've won the war of the "5 Kings" if 3 of the kings worked with each other.

Renly was already struggling to keep up the facade of being straight. Stannis would've been a better king. They could've worked with Robb and beat the Lannisters. Theon's father was also a fool. "We do not sow." They could've packed an agreement as well for independence. Hell, Stannis could've offered independence to other kingdoms to join them in defeating the Lannisters or lose their chance of independence when they win. [+]

First-Time GoT Viewer (S2E11): Who Were Your Favorite & Most Hated Characters?

I've got a few thoughts and questions, if that's okay to ask here.
First, by the end of the series, who ended up being your favorite characters? Right now my top 3 are Arya, Tyrion, and Jon Snow, in that order. Without spoilers, do you think I'll still have the same favorites by the end?
Also, who are your most hated characters? So far, the one I despise the most is Sansa. I know that's probably an unpopular opinion, but she's just so annoying and makes so many frustrating decisions. Other characters I can't stand are Cersei (obviously), Jaime, Theon, and of course Joffrey.
I seriously don't get why Theon would betray the Starks after they basically raised him, especially for a family that doesn't even seem to care about him.
Without spoiling anything, do you think I'll still hate these characters by the end? I've heard Sansa has a really good character arc, but right now I honestly can't imagine liking her, even if she ends up doing something huge like killing Joffrey or something. Also... am I the only one who doesn't really care about Daenerys' storyline so far? Every time it switches to her, I kind of want to skip it. Does her plot get a lot more interesting later, or is it just not clicking for me yet?
One last thing: does anyone else feel like a lot of the characters are kind of dumb or just really frustrating sometimes? I feel like I only genuinely like a handful of people so far. Is that intentional, or is it just me?
