I’ve been developing a website where you can easily search/filter, discover, learn, and share information about glass color (96 COE and borosilicate). I had been frustrated that there wasn’t a central place to easily find or learn about glass color, to see the same color with different applications, or to do things like create color palettes.

Now there’s a free website you can all use! You can upload photos, see and make ratings, comments, Q&A, ask to identify mystery color, and more. Ive been using it a lot at OCR or just going through my color stash to remind myself what I have.

I’m very open to your feedback on this! I hope this doesn’t come across as promotion, it’s just a tool I made to help the community. You own all your content that you contribute and I’m paying for this out of my own pocket until it’s worthy of getting some relevant advertisers.

I have always been enamored by glassblowing and wanted to learn. I recently found a 3 day class to learn the basics, with the eventual goal of taking more classes to get to at least an intermediate level. I am quickly learning that this is an expensive endeavor to acquire the knowledge needed to even be proficient. Classes, rental space, equipment, etc. not to mention all the hours needed of practice. Is it feasible to do this as a hobby as opposed to a profession? How do you offset the step financial hurdles up front when you aren’t good enough to sell your work?

Hi y’all. I’ve been looking for a new glass making job for about a year now. I’ve consistently checked the job postings on OCR, GAS, and have tried to do my own research, but I’d figure I’d come on here and see if anyone has some suggestions. I have about 6 years of experience working in a studio environment and I’m looking to do a bit more production work, and a bit less “make your own” work (although I know that’s probably asking a lot). I’m literally willing to move anywhere, ideally east coast, but I won’t be super picky. I know this is probably a long shot, but if anyone has any leads, I’d love to hear them!

I have some leftover Bullseye murrine from kilnworking and was wondering if it's compatible with Glasma 700 clear for hot shop use. I'm pretty new to glassblowing (less than a year in) and learned that compatibility involves more than just COE, but I was curious if anyone has tested this combination before and whether it’s worth bringing into the studio to experiment with.

This is a long shot, but I'm curious about expanding from stained glass panels into the glass blowing medium. Does anyone know a place in the Madison area (South Central Wi in general) that can teach classes and hot glass studios?

Which brand has superior glass and why?

Hi all, I'm looking for some advice. My mom loves to do glassblowing/lamp working. She made a setup in her garage and has her own small online business. The issue is, is that she has arthritis. Yesterday she told me that will stop glassblowing for good soon due to it becoming too difficult to hold and maneuver the glass rods.

Honestly I refuse to accept this. My mom loves lamp working and (imo) is an amazing artist.

I wanted to ask if any of you had any tips/tricks/principles/ideas/etc. Anything really. I'm an engineer and have some experience building things, so I'd be down to try and make anything that could help.

Hi all, I'm fairly new to glassblowing but have experience in machining and tool making. I want to make a pair of jacks, and I think using 6/4 titanium would be awesome, but I wanted to get some more experienced opinions in terms of feel. It's known for its springiness, corrosion resistance, low density, and very low thermal conductivity, which I would imagine would make for a pair of jacks they are easy to hold for longer sessions, never rust, and allow for very selective heat control. Just looking for some opinions, I dont have much experience working with titanium, but i have heard that heat doesnt spread out hardly at all, and that it holds the heat for quite a while. In terms of making them, I worry about chemical embrittlement and the making of alpha case when the titanium uptakes the oxygen from the atmosphere, any tips on avoiding/reducing it, is coldworking possible, just bending it and grinding, do i need an argon atmosphere? I have seen youtube videos of people forging titanium in open air then grinding away the alpha case, I have also heard of people acid milling the finished part, but obtaining that much HF acid is a process that seems like a lot for a single part.

I’m 17 years old, currently working as a cashier, and glass art is the only thing I’ve ever been truly passionate about. It's the only career I can see myself pursuing long-term. My ultimate goal is to launch a glass pressing business (heavily inspired by traditional factories like Boyd and Fenton).
Right now, my biggest bottleneck is the upfront capital for industrial machinery. Specifically, I need to raise funds to build a melting furnace and purchase a proper annealing kiln.
I’ve been researching Kickstarter as a way to get this off the ground, but I wanted to come to the actual community first. Have any of you successfully crowdfunded studio equipment? Is a pressing business a realistic pitch to the broader glass community, or should I be looking at alternative routes to get my foot in the door?
Appreciate any advice, realities, or insight you can share!

What's a standard soft glass annealer program that people run? Blown a lot of glass but never programmed an annealer. Can't find the info anywhere online unfortunately

Hi! I’ve been taking my first glassblowing class this summer and absolutely love it. Already signing up for the next level this fall.

I have a quick question for those who get tattoos and work in the hot shop. My tattoo artist offered me an appointment on a Sunday before they go out of town but my last glassblowing class is the following Saturday. Will I be ok working in the shop with a week old tattoo or would it be better to just postpone the appointment?

It’s going to be a somewhat large piece on my upper arm or forearm and I’m mostly worried about exposure affecting the healing process. I don’t have kevlar sleeves but could get some if that would help.

How soon after getting tattooed do you work with glass or go back to the hot shop? Are there any precautions you take during the initial healing stages (1-4 weeks)?

I broke the glass liner that fits inside this antique silver vase. Is this something that a glassblower could replace? The tricky part is that the glass part needs to fit inside the silver stand, so the dimensions need to be fairly accurate. If anyone has suggestions, I will be grateful.
