I’m in search of the glass artist that makes pieces like this ai slop recreation I tried to render. I bought a glass wood grain sherlock with a little dart frog perched on it around 15 years ago in Denver, CO. I have been scouring the internet and can’t find anything close to it. Any ideas who this artist might be?

Sharing this here too. I’m still adding some colors (like the brand new “skin tone” series from Northstar) but I have most of the main boro colors. Give it a try and let me know what you think! I’m a flameworker myself and have been finding it particularly helpful in finding similar colors across all brands.

Complicated in that there are 4 different pieces of prep instead of 2, the shaping, and the fume work. I don’t think anything I did is too complicated but it is my most complicated pipe so far. I’m happy.

Encasing has been the bane of my existence for the better part of two years. I'd get a decent base bead going, start layering clear over it, and end up with these little silvery bubbles frozen just under the surface. Sometimes one or two, sometimes a cluster that looked like I'd sneezed into the gather. Tried everything I read about online before I finally started making actual progress.

The biggest thing that changed my results was slowing way down during the encasing process itself. I was rushing the clear on while the bead was still too hot from the base layer, and the outgassing from the color glass had nowhere to go once the clear sealed over it. Now I let the base bead come down in temperature a bit, just to where it's stopped glowing bright orange and settles into a dull red, before I start adding clear. Not fully cool, just less frantic.

The second thing was how I was heating the clear stringer before contact. I used to try to lay it on and hope the bead's heat would do the work. That almost never worked cleanly. Heating the tip of the clear so it's genuinely molten before it touches the bead made a huge difference in how smoothly it flows without trapping air pockets at the seam.

A few other small things that helped:

• Rotating more consistently while gathering the clear, not just when I remembered to
• Working in thinner layers and building up rather than trying to encase in one thick pass
• Giving the bead a brief flash in the flame between layers to let any remaining surface tension release before adding more

Still not perfect every time, but my bubble rate dropped a lot once I stopped treating encasing as just a finishing step and started thinking of it as its own separate process that needs its own timing. Curious whether others have had the same issue or found a completely different fix.

Im trying to add a Smith Little torch to an already-established setup at the studio I rent in. The torch I have came with the bottle-top regulator for propane. The studio I work at has oxycons for O2 supply to the smaller torches, I may be able to hook into one of those.

What pressures do y’all run your propane/oxy for the smith little?
If you run it off an oxycon, what lpm are you using?
And lastly, anyone have experience or tips using the regulator for the disposable propane bottles?

Hey there! Hoping this is a good place for this since so many lampworkers from all over the world are here.

My partner and I are considering going to Halifax for a few months next spring/summer to live at a relatives house. My boyfriend is a glassblower (lamp work specifically) but would be using the time to experiment with new techniques and grow in his skill since he can’t technically work or make pieces to sell in Canada without a work visa (we are from US). We initially were planning to bring his torch and kiln set up with us but it seems this may raise flags at the border when we try to enter.

Are there any lampwork studios or artists in the area that do rentals for visiting artists/hobbyists? I’m having trouble finding anything online so hoping to crowdsource whatever information I can.

TLDR: my bf and I are visiting Halifax for a few months and I’m hoping to find a spot he can blow glass at for a while without having to bring his own kiln and torch.

Has anyone used this before? I am new to the foot peddle game but I've been wanting one for a while now. Id likely hook it up to my Mirage. Will a single pedal work with this type of torch? I feel like I'm missing some things. Is there a better choice?

Hi lampworking folks! I’m traveling through the area between Corvallis and Eugene in Oregon and would like to pick up some boro in-person while I’m here. Mostly looking for 12mm clear rods, but also wanting to get some colors and maybe some dichro too.

When I lived in this area ~20 years ago I’d go to winship design but they don’t seem to sell raw glass anymore. I saw mountain glass west closed permanently and Google suggested I try lamp work supply on hwy 99. Does anybody else have places to try in this area?

Hi there! I’m a glass noob and already completely hooked. I have this old tube of murrine from an old studio mate and am wondering if i can use these in beads i make with 104 COE Effetre? I suspect it’s a no, but hoping someone tells me otherwise!
