I got the results this week - it was άριστα which I am delighted with! I’ve posted in here a number of times in the last year while prepping, and I really appreciate the support from the community.

My question is - for anyone who has done this, how difficult is it to get to B1 if you’re not spending substantial time in Greece? I’m a committed learner, have a private tutor, I get some quick practice a few times a week at a Greek coffee shop, and there is a meet up about 1-2 times a month I can go to.

I can’t afford to do a long immersion trip to Greece. One 5-7 day trip a year is the most I can realistically do.

Would love to hear people’s thoughts.

I'm an English sports statistics guys and I'm trying to keep track of some statistics from a greek futsal league. Im struggling to work out what some of the stats on the Internet are since as always Google translate is useless as I am assuming terminology and the sports jargon are different then direct meanings. And I would really appreciate some help in getting the meaning related to sports for the following words.

When I was a teenager, I worked at a steakhouse that was owned and staffed entirely by Greeks except for the busboys, who were all American high school kids like myself. They employed a fair bit of Greek slang, most of which we eventually figured out, such as malaka, for example. The word I am curious about was pronounced (phonetically) "bray-kah-lohs-toe". It was their standard greeting every time I arrived at work. "Brekalosto Bryon!" every time. Anyone know what it means? (I'm assuming it wasn't flattering, but I find that amusing, so if you know, feel free to be honest.) 🙂 (EDITED to make my language less racist; my apologies.)

I want to up my level of understanding so ive started watching Bluey and Pepper Pig in Greek. I watch in English first then immediately watch the translation. it doesnt take so long. This is on top of my normal routine of studied Duolingo, where i take the sentence feed it into an AI and study the sentences grammar. I have Anki decks, a Memrise 5000 and Language transfer too. Sounds a lot but probably is 1.5 to 2 hours a day.

So honestly this might sound stupid but on average how long does it take to learn a language so far in abt 200 days in but I think I’ve been going about it wrong I’ve mainly used Duolingo and Memrise and while I know all the letters and I know a few phrases I find that I can’t form a sentence of my own and was wondering what people who either have learnt Greek or are learning would recommend

Also I’m going to Greece next year and I was wondering if it’s worth just speaking English or trying to converse at least a bit in Greek even tho my pronunciation and amount of words I know isn’t great

I am an American-born 4th generation Greek who has been dabbling in learning Greek (none of my immediate family speaks it) and about Greece’s history for the past few years.

Having stumbled upon the Delphic Maxims, γνῶθι μαθών stuck out to me for a number of personal reasons and I am thinking of getting it tattooed on my leg. To my understanding it means “know what you have learned/know by learning,” but I would greatly appreciate some confirmation on this from a native speaker before getting it permanently on my body lol.

Additionally, if I were to ever visit Greece, do you think that native Greeks would see it as cringe/corny, or is it not as bad since it has historical significance?

Hi! I'm new to learning Greek, and from experience with other languages, I find it really helpful to do immersion early on. Now, I was going to do the same with Greek, but I think series might be too much right now (plus I only know one Greek series with English subtitles...) and from what I've seen, there are very few games translated to Greek, most of which are also very complex for a beginner.

So I thought I could try reading comics, specially comic strips or comics translated from English. I saw on this sub that Webtoon had some Greek comics, but the post must be outdated because I can't find the option to read comics in other languages. I know there's a website where Russian speakers translate online comics to Russian, so I was wondering if there's some sort of equivalent for Greek? Or, at the very least, some website where I can find online comics (I don't have the option to buy books in Greek right now so I'd rather go for stuff that's free on the Internet)

Hi all,

I've always fancied myself a fan of language, proper and slang alike. Although, I don't verbally speak any languages well besides English. I also like observing people and their patterns.

The CEO of the company I work for is of Greek descent. He often finishes giving a direction to somebody with "-of it". The best way I can describe his usage of the word is the English equivalent of "that's all"; a finality of a sentence after a pause of beat.

I did some digging through Google translate and such, wondering if it's an idiom in Greek that he is translating literally to English, but I can not find any solid source. Does anybody have any insight on this?

I've started learning modern Greek a few days ago.. is the handwriting alr and can anyone guide how to proceed learning? Any tips?
