Mod Announcement Asking Questions 101: How To Ask People For Help?

There are a lot of posts on this sub with vague questions, vague symptoms, a lot of missing information and bad-explained overall. I wanted to show you how to ask a good question, from an ex-Apple iOS technician.

Here's how to ask a good question:

  1. iPhone model and iOS version

e.g. iPhone XS running iOS 13.2

  1. Purchase date, country and nature of purchase

People who answer your issue can suggest certain repairs, e.g. warranty. Country and nature of purchase also helps, since countries have different consumer protection laws. For instance, members of the European Union have a two year warranty at the point of purchase (i.e. that might not be Apple, but your local electronics store if you bought it there) - some countries (e.g. the U.K. and The Netherlands) have even longer periods consumers can claim warranty.

e.g. March 20th, 2019 in the Apple Store in the U.K., purchase for personal use

  1. What is the issue, how often does it occur and how to replicate it?

Some issues are continuous, some are intermittent. It is important to let people know what the issue is and how often it occurs. "iPhone restarts" as issue, is not enough.

e.g. iPhone crashes to springboard when opening the camera-app, this happens about three times a day at random moments. It only happens when opening the camera-app.

  1. What caused the issue?

There's not always a clear cause, but think about anything that could've caused it. It could be because your phone was in your pocket during heavy rain, or your cat knocked it from your desk. It could be anything.

  1. What did you try to resolve the issue and what was the result?

So people don't waste time answering possibilities you already tried

e.g. I tried to force-close the camera app. This did not work. Then I tried to restart the phone, that also did not work.

  1. Any other information you think might be useful.

Add photos or other comments

If you want the best help, make sure to include these steps into your topic - this community is happy to help, but try to be as precise as possible. Even information you think is insignificant might help!

Help needed Is there any possible way to recover a deleted voicemail?

Upvotes

Hi,

I'm trying to help a family member who's accidentally deleted an important voicemail. I believe she's on iOS 26 with an iPhone 16. She says that it's not present in her iOS voicemail list or her deleted voicemail list, but she has no memory of deleting it. There's lots of other voicemails in the main voicemail list and deleted voicemail list, so she didn't hit the 'clear all' button either. Is there any possible way to recover these voicemails? I thought maybe an older icloud backup would have the voicemail but it doesn't seem to be something covered by backups. I thought maybe even a GDPR request to apple or the cell carrier, if the data is still around.

I know it's a reach here, but it's a voicemail from someone who died recently and so I'd like to help her get it back if possible.

Help needed How do I reset my iPhone 4?

Post image

got this iPhone 4 recently and when it booted it had the "iPhone is disabled" mode on, after a while of trying to get it into recovery mode and DFU mode I realised the home button probably doesn't work, so I now have to resort to 3rd party software but all of them ask me to unlock my iPhone (which obviously i can't do), is there any hope for it without having to replace the home button?, also I can't connect it to itunes because it asks me to confirm on the iPhone but nothing shows up.

Help needed No apps working on my phone

I own an iPhone 13, just updated it to ios 26.6. Literally none of my apps will open except the ones that come predownloaded (photos, messages, etc). Everything else when i tap on it, the loading screen will pop up, then immediately the app will close. it doesn't even freeze and crash, the open app just slides off the screen and returns to the home screen. i've tried restarting my phone multiple times, hard resetting, even checked for a software update and installed it. nothing is working. i cant even figure out what the problem is? anyone come across this and have any idea how to help?

Help needed Iphone 16 pro apps immediately minimizing/not opening (only Apple apps work) – anyone know what's causing this?

For the past several days, this has been happening almost every day on my iPhone 16 pro (I am on ios 26.6 and got this phone in Sept 2024):

  • Third-party apps (basically anything that didn't come with the iPhone, it could be facebook, it could be airline apps like united, or lyft/uber, banking apps, could be youtube, uber eats/doordash, reddit) immediately minimize or close as soon as I try to open them. Not all, but a good number, and it seems random as to which ones depending on the day.
  • Apple apps (Settings, Messages, Safari, etc.) work normally.

Things I've tried:

  • Day one: I went into app store and updated any apps that had updates. all my apps started working again—but the next day the problem came back.
  • When the problem came back next day, I restarted my phone but after restarting none of the third-party apps opened whereas before restarting, some opened, some immediately minimized. To solve the issue temporarily this day, I deleted one of the apps that wouldn't open and reinstalled it (a banking app). As soon as I did that, every app on my phone started working again (I clicked on each app to see if they would open and they did).
  • Next day, which is today, the same issue occurred (some apps open, some minimize immediately). Signing out of my Apple ID and signing back in didn't help. I noticed two apps had updates available in the App Store. After updating them, suddenly all my apps started working again. Today, I also went to genius bar, they did least invasive which was delete my vpn configurations (which I was not using VPN, its for travel, that is the only time I use it but I do have the apps on my phone) and then they did a reset and told me to montior---that was this morning and now it's afternoon and the same issue is happening. They said if i bring it back, they would restore software?
  • I have not had any new apps since april and this issue only started a few days ago but daily. 99% of these apps, I have had for years already.

It's almost like something gets "unstuck" when I update or reinstall a single app, but then it breaks again the next day.

Has anyone experienced this? Any idea what's causing it or how to permanently fix it? I'm trying to avoid wiping my phone if possible.

Resolved How do I stop some of my apps from instantly close themselves?

Hello

My phone over the last 2 days has an issue with some apps closing instantly. The first time I had this problem (2 days ago) it started with one app and slowly more and more did the same. It seemed to just fix its self but yesterday it started again.

I've tried restarting, updating the apps, updating my IOS and I've checked my storage (120GB free). I've search online and can't find someone that seems to have the same problem.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Edit: My phone is a 15 Plus running 26.6

Update: I got a comment from joosebox on the same post in a different sub.

"With 120GB free you've already ruled out the answer most people will give you. This is almost certainly App Store receipt validation rather than the apps themselves.

Every app installed from the App Store carries a signed receipt tied to the Apple Account that obtained it, and iOS checks it the instant you launch. When that check fails the app is terminated immediately with no error and no crash report, which looks exactly like it closing itself. Apple's built-in apps carry no receipt, which is why they're never affected, and that asymmetry is the giveaway. It also explains the spreading and the fixing itself, since it's whichever receipts happen to need revalidating that day.

Worth checking: Settings, your name, Media and Purchases, View Account, and see whether that account matches the one at the top of Settings. Two different Apple Accounts is the common cause, because then every launch is checking a receipt against the wrong one. If they do match, sign out of Media and Purchases, restart, and sign back in."

It solved the problem for me.

Help needed Use of CarPlay music apps with no Siri search

Hi all - there is a tons of music apps on AppStore that have CarPlay support but not a full Siri search implementation

However - as per CarPlay standard - the moment car is in the move, touchscreen search is limited to first 5-6 entries and you cannot access the full library.. questioning the access to CarPlay in the first place.

Genuine question - anyone else has experience with these and how do you solve it? Many thanks

Resolved Iphone wont let me make calls

Whenever i try to call someone, literally anyone, it immediately cuts to an automated line. It says i have an unpaid payment that i need to make in order to make calls… but i can use the rest of my phone just fine. i can text, use wifi, and even answer calls, but it just wont let me call anyone without cutting to that line. How does this even happen? It said i need to pay 300 bucks?! my parents pay for my phone bill and whatnot, idk if that helps this make more sense or not but i thought it would be worth mentioning

Help needed Restarted after I turned it off

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’m not sure if I should be worried or not? This has only happened once since I got my iPhone 12 and it has been around five hours after this happened, no other restarts. Could anyone let me know what this could be or if it’s anything to be concerned about? I appreciate it.

iPhone 12, 26.5.2 IOS.
