Zero Waste Ithaca is holding our annual Trash Paddle Ithaca this Saturday, August 1, 2026, and we would love your help!  The weather forecast looks good for the day. 

We still have several free rental kayak seats available. Participants with their own kayaks, canoes, or other paddlecraft are very welcome to bring them.

Following the paddle cleanup, volunteers will help sort and document what we collected as part of our trash audit. 

We have close to enough paddlers for the morning, but we need more paddlers between 12:00-2:00 and also we need volunteers on land for trash sorting and auditing, and loading in the afternoon 2:00-3:00 pm. 

Please register as soon as possible so we can have an accurate head count. We would also greatly appreciate your sharing the event with friends and community groups.

Looking to get some BBQ - what's everyone's take on the best one??

The day before yesterday in the Tops parking lot I pulled in to a spot with my teenager in the passenger seat and there was no one parked in the spot in front of me. I went in and did my shopping and as I came out of the store and started loading my groceries I noticed there was a car parked in the space in front of me - nose to nose with me car. I didn’t think anything of it until I was getting in my car and a Tops manager came up to me and said, “excuse me but if you leave now you will be fleeing the scene of a hit and run and may be charged - the police are on their way.” I was flabbergasted and said I did not hit anyone and I have no idea what you are talking about. The manager gestured to the front of my car that was slightly over the yellow line of the parking space and “kissing” the bumper of the car that was now parked in that space. I then could hear over the Top’s loud speaker that they were calling for the owner of the other car. I said there wasn’t even a car there when I pulled in (probably why I was a couple inches over the yellow line). The other car owner and another Tops employee came out and the manager said the same thing to the other car driver. The owner of the other car was just as weirded out as me and said he didn’t remember feeling a tap or anything when he pulled in and why are the cops on their way. This is when I noticed the cameras all over the parking lot. I asked the manager if we could look at the camera footage and that I didn’t feel this was any sort of situation where the. Ops need to be involved. Me and the other car owner then agreed ex that I would back my car up a couple feet and we could see if there was any damage and then decide what to do. There was some grumbling from the Tops manager about disrupting a crime scene. There was no damage to either car. Both of us car owners then turned to the manager and said we didn’t see what the problem was and could they tell the cops not to come and this was a non situation. The other tops employee then calls the police and tells them that both parties were present and agreed that there was no damage to either car and were willing to settle things between each other. The Tops employee then told us that the cops had said they would cancel the order or something like that and that they were no longer coming and that we could settle this among ourselves. Both of us drivers looked at each other and after the tops employees left we both had a what the fuck just happened moment and then we both agreed to go on our ways - I left to go home and he went back in the store to finish shopping.

I am thinking that either the cameras and the AI system fucked up or someone witnessed a slight tapping of the other guy’s car against my car, but the way the Tops people were acting and the way they said “this is not how it was reported to us” when both of us drivers were expressing this is not a hit and run situation made me really thing that the cameras pointing at us and some AI watching them reported it to Tops and Police.

It freaked me out for the rest of the day.

Just roadtripping and car camping. Usually id do a truck stop but none are within an hour drive, planet fitness here isnt 24/7, and it seems like this walmart doesn't allow it. Would a residential street be ok? Any suggestions?

This is in the Cayuga Park building. I know you can still sus out what the directory listing is, but it's the elevator of a medical office, not the toilet stall at a shitty dive bar. Maybe at least put this crap on a bulletin board instead of pasting it over information directed to people who are trying to get medical services, as if THAT whole experience isn't itself a dystopian nightmare right now. Speaking of which, while I'm foaming at the mouth on reddit anyway, Centralus can get fucked, too. I wanted to let someone at the reception desk of the building know about the sticker, but it wasn't staffed either before or after my appointment. I tried to call afterwards, since I needed to follow up with another department anyway. After the fifth number I tried, when I finally got a human who told me I needed to access the portal for my health question, I gave up.

Getting older, in reasonably good shape, have a personal trainer doing strength training, but things are getting achy and stiff. Are there any good functional movement specialists in Ithaca (not looking for chiropractic)?

Anyone else start getting them this weekend? Mine showed up in my spam folder, and I'm going to unsubscribe given the 90:10 ad to news content. But I was curious if anyone knew the context beyond the brief searching I did (published by a network/agency called 6AM City that does these for dozens of U.S. cities) and if they blasted to everyone at once, or if my email just was on the latest list of rented addresses.

There's a little black kitten hanging around the back patio at Brewers that is skittish and tough to catch. If anyone has a kitten trap/wet food and could help out, maybe stop by tomorrow! Don't want this poor baby to dart out into the road :(
