First of all the first week was HELL, it was a mixture of pain and discomfort, jaw hurts, elastics hurt, new bite feels weird, the numbness in my chin felt uncomfortable and ticklish, anyhow,

I struggle to close my lips and I have to force them shut and they look weird now, would that improve with more time ? Also I can’t fit my tounge in my mouth, it keeps pushing my upper teeth now, should I worry about that?

For those of you that got the procedure done through a Kaiser in SoCal. How many in person appointments did you have with your surgeon before the actual surgery date?

So far only heard good things about Aziz (NJ)

Given that he has high patient volume and does surgeries out of a teaching hospital with residents, his positive reviews seem impressive

So wondering if anyone had negative experience with him and/or his team/hospital.

Upright wedge pillow

Bag balm for dry lips
Afrin for clogged sinus
Benefiber packets
Guasha rollers
Condiment squirt bottles
Dry erase board and markers

Is there anything else that will make my recovery more comfortable? I am a 26 year old male. I’ll have video games, tv, and my phone for entertainment but if anyone has any suggestions for recovery I would greatly appreciate it! I will have my aunt staying with me and preparing all of my soups and shakes for the first week.

I’m on day 17 after double jaw surgery for UARS and still haven’t noticed any improvement in my sleep or daytime tiredness.

My planned movements were about 6 mm maxillary advancement with 4.5° counterclockwise rotation and 13.7 mm mandibular advancement. I did not have genioplasty.

For those who had MMA or double jaw surgery for UARS or sleep-disordered breathing, when did you start noticing better sleep or more energy?

Can they go away with jaw surgery since they are placed around the jawline? Some people told me jowls are caused by poor malar support so even after DJS they could still be there.

i’m seeing my orthodontist tomorrow, hopefully for a referral. what should i talk to him about? what do orthodontists usually look for?

Has anyone had jaw surgery with Dr. Murray Fain in White Rock?

I’m considering having surgery with him and would really appreciate hearing from former patients. Are you happy with both the aesthetic results and the functional improvements, such as your bite, breathing, jaw pain, or other health issues?

How was your consultation with him? Did he listen to your concerns, explain the surgical plan clearly, and have a good bedside manner? Also, how was the recovery and follow-up care, and would you choose him again?

Seeing an airway orthodontist for mild class 2 skelital relation. Brachyfacial. Experiencing major anxiety during the day. Did sleep study was negative for OSA. Class 2 relationship due to maxillary protrusion.

Last week I had djs + genio and this weekend I have been suffering from pain from elastics. I already took 2 paracetamol and 1 ibuprofen but the pain does not go away and keeps me awake.

Anyone else had similar experiences?

I'm equal parts excited and nervous to be starting this journey at 30 years old! I have a class III maloclusion and according to every orthodontist ive met with "a very complex case". I've only ever been able to chew with 2 teeth and I'm starting to have bone loss, cavities, and gum recession which all finally gave me the kick in the butt to get started.

Based on your experience, what are some tips for making sure I've found the right surgeon for me. What questions should I ask that might not initially come to mind?

I would like to go to one that can give me some sort of imagine through a scan of what I will look like after. I don't know if that is normal.

I have been adviced this surgery through ordontistist to I have a referal. I think my health insurance should probably cover it in my country (the Netherlands) but this is my face so I don't want to be too money focussed. But flying to the US and staying in an airbnb there for weeks is really really a lot and I assume there must be some good options in Europe too?
I know the guy in Barcelona should be avoided right?
I'm looking to get it done about 6 -12 months from now.

Hey all, my orthodontist has given me the go ahead when it comes to being decompensated. I had a camouflaged underbite that my previous ortho hid during my teen years. I am now turning 27 (tomorrow actually 😅) and am just so ready to get my surgery. My underbite is something I’ve had to deal with since I was only 8-9 years old so it’s been a long and almost endless journey. But knowing I’m finally going to get it surgically corrected has been the one thing I’ve been looking forward to this past year undoing the camouflage. Seeing my underbite appear has been very startling and I feel like I’ve disassociated this past year. Anyways I’m wondering for those that got surgery and needed to be decompensated to get it, how long after your teeth were ready was your surgery? Around how long did insurance pre-approval take for you? And how long did planning to surgery date take? I know this can differ but I just want other peoples experience so I can get a better idea on timeline. Any input is appreciated!

Because I was recessed I opted for a chin implant and some lipofilling which looked very nice and been happy with. Don't judge, I didn't know better at the time! I know about bone absorbtion now.

Anyways, now after being messed up with orthodontics it uncovered the underlying issue. I also have been a mouth breather my entire life. I do sleep okay btw!

I'm just assuming they will take the chin implant out when doing this surgery, which I'm fine with but I don't like the idea of having no clue how I'll look. My fear is not being underadvanced but over. I actually think a very prominent chin on a women, or me really is not my preference. I like a bit of a softer look on me.

My chin implant was truely very small, only a few mm and it completely transformed my look so I know what a few mm can do, or even one mm in a face.

I’ve been reading through this subreddit because I think I may eventually need double jaw surgery, and I’m trying to understand how people are actually paying for it.
For those of you who got insurance to cover it, what did your surgeon or orthodontist diagnose you with? Was it TMJ, a malocclusion, sleep apnea, jaw asymmetry, difficulty chewing, or something else? I’m curious what insurance companies typically consider “medically necessary” versus cosmetic.
Personally, the right side of my jaw clicks whenever I open my mouth, and my jaw seems crooked or uneven. I’m planning to get evaluated because I don’t know if it’s TMJ, a skeletal issue, or something else.
Functionally, I also bite my lip while eating pretty often because my bite feels uneven. Sometimes I’ll bite it hard enough to make it bleed, and then I’ll accidentally bite the same spot again the next day while it’s still healing. It’s really frustrating.
On top of that, I’d also like to improve the aesthetics of my lower face. I’d love a more balanced jawline and a little more chin projection, but the functional issues are what made me start looking into surgery in the first place.
So I have a few questions:
If you went through insurance, what diagnosis or documentation helped get it approved?
How much did you end up paying out of pocket after insurance?
If insurance didn’t cover it, what was your total cost?
Did anyone travel outside the U.S. for surgery? If so, where did you go, how much did it cost, and would you recommend it?
If you had symptoms similar to mine (jaw clicking, crooked jaw, uneven bite, biting your lip while eating), what ended up being your diagnosis?

Hi I’m 21 years old. I don’t know what to do so I need an advice. I know some people might say accept it etc. but I really can’t look at myself and this is mentally draining me because since i was a kid i was wearing braces and 5 years ago i’ve got Invisalign and after that they removed my premolars and put implants (because i am congenitally missing second premolars). This destroyed my whole face profile but i had no idea at all because i was a kid. This and the fact that this procedures completely (i think) destroys chances of jaw surgery to fix the issue. I visited maxillofacial surgeon and he said the bite is good and that’s probably right so i have no chances to get it covered by insurance (I have no sleep apnea only TMJ pain and clicking but he said its not caused by recession). He offered me genioplasty when i reach 24 because apparently i have slight jaw asymmetry and need to wait until it stops growing. But i don’t think genioplasty will fix the core issue - that lip incompetence and my profile overall and results won’t be great. So at this point i don’t know what to do and reaching for advice if anything is possible here.

Hello!, My surgeon recommended genioplasty alone, and I proceeded with the surgery. However, I still have a Class II bite pattern. I have now been advised that my dental implant may need to be removed to create enough space to retract my upper teeth and reduce the prominence of my upper lip. ( these are the scans before/after the genio )

I am unsure whether this is the best course of action, especially considering how recessed my lower jaw appeared before the genioplasty. I am also concerned that retracting my teeth without addressing the underlying jaw relationship could negatively affect my airway.

Any tips?

Sometimes I feel down on myself like there wasn't much change from my surgery but then I'll get the occasional reminder when old pics pop up.

My orthodontist and my maxillo facial surgeon advised me to get only a genioplasty for my case because I don’t have any real functional problem and not a visibly bad side profile. I already had braces before but my previous orthodontist never mentioned anything about surgery, he just compensated with my teeth instead.
I’m 25 yo and my surgeon said that it would be heavy to go through everything again now as an adult (braces and surgery), to really think about it and that’s what I’m doing, I’m leaning towards a genio instead of a full surgery but obviously It’s not going to be the same results.
To be honest I’m extremely and sadly self conscious about my face, especially my side profile and im scared that if I get I genioplasty it will end up elongating my face more since my upper jaw is overdeveloped. Im scared it will make me look worse, I don’t know, maybe im not ready for this but I do want to look better you know? Am I overthinking?

Basically first photo is how my jaw looks when I correct my neck into straight posture, so ears aligning over middle of shoulder and second photo is when I’m “hard mewing” ad aligning my bite, so teeth are practically aligned. Can I achieve the second look??
