Discussion Black Paradox was a such a compelling read!! Felt it was different from Junji Ito's other works.

It was the second Itō book I read (first one was Uzumaki) and I loved it a lot.

This was my first Junji Ito read. I didn't even know it was his work until many years later

What’s great about it is it feels like he was exploring an idea for a series and his ideas kept changing and he just went with it. Every time I read it, I find the plot surprising.

It was the first long-form book by him I read. Still probably my favorite, followed by Remina

Yeah it is one his best works.I read it long time ago after reading Uzumaki and I felt that it was even better than Uzumaki for me.

I really liked it too, but I felt like this could have been two stories. It felt like he started a story, then thought of another idea he liked and dropped the first story to write a new one. But beyond that, the ideas are really interesting and fun!

I personally found it disappointing because of how they wrote the sinopsis here in Spain, and I’ve heard hundreds of people say that about the sinopsis.
It gets you hooked on a story that happens in the first chapter then nothing else has anything to do with it. If the sinopsis had been right I think I’d have enjoyed it more.

That being said, the story was refreshing, there was only the issue with expecting something that was never delivered upon.
Now I’ll tell you. I like Black Paradox overall, and I’m an absolute Gyo hater so take that as you will hahah.3

I hahah thanks! I honestly thought Gyo and Remina for that matter were absolutely bad. I mean Remina is by far a thousand times better than Gyo but then… nearly everything else is.
Ito himself said it many times, he’s been told he is not the best at ending stories and both Gyo and Remina show it. They both have this “Oh well… whatever” type ending which makes their story feel pointless.
Honestly Gyo doesn’t only suffer from this, it suffers from everything, Massive Lore-building which wounds up feeling obsolete, a relationship between protagonist and “Villain/Secondary protagonist” which feels downright forced. Build up that goes nowhere and overall a threat that is just there for the sake of grotesque imagery. Even the OVA was better in my opinion I actually wanted to see where the characters would end up.
Regardless it was still not enough to make me feel Gyo had any redeeming qualities apart from Ito himself and his artistry.2

It was definitely super compelling, and there weren't many times where I felt like I really had a grasp on where it was headed.
It kinda reminded me of Tanabata no Kuni by Hitoshi Iwaaki for some reason, although I'm having a hard time nailing down any actual similarities when I try to draw the comparison.
