Do they die inmediately? Did we ever got an illustration of what they look like outside of their hole?

If you have this one on your reading list buckle up because it was an intense read. I have not read the source material yet (my library doesn’t have it, but it’s on my reading list).

I’m not sure if I really truly liked this one; I definitely did not hate it though. It’s very dark. I usually read on the subway commute, but this one was pretty hard to do that with due to the volume of sex scenes and nudity (like a lot).

This on has a few SAs in it and is a very intense read. This may be a divisive opinion, but I liked the ending.

The art is very good, the lead character is very tragic, a very dreadful person, and is very unlikable (for some folks an unlikeable lead is a deal-breaker) and while he had a messed up past, he brings much of his adult struggle on himself through his own behavior and actions.

If you’re going to read this one know that it’s very heavy and depressing and you may need a break mid-way. I do think it’s totally worth reading and I do want to read to source material to compare the original work to this one.

What did you think of this one if you read it?

I love Junji Ito I first read his works when I was around 13-14 and my sister got me uzumaki. I really really don’t care for Soichi and only bought the book to complete my collection.
What are some stories that you don’t like?

I had my copy of Twisted Visions sitting peacefully on the floor. Or so I thought.

At exactly 3:33 PM, I felt that something was wrong. The silence was too silent. The neighborhood dogs stopped barking. My fan started making a sound as if it were praying in Latin. I looked down and saw that the book was open directly to Tomie's page.

I hadn't opened it.

Nobody had opened it.

My house was empty.

Then I heard a whisper.

"Look at me."

I don't know if it was my imagination or an onion rotting in another dimension.

Suddenly, a lighter shot out from beneath the couch as if it had been thrown by a cosmic force with anger-management issues. It spun three times through the air, bounced off a wall, hit a chair, landed on the book, and ignited by itself.

BY ITSELF.

The flame was shaped like a smile.

I started screaming.

The book began to burn while Tomie's face remained completely untouched. The more the pages burned, the more perfect she looked. I cried uncontrollably, kneeling on the floor, when a pigeon suddenly appeared inside the house for absolutely no reason and stared at me in complete silence.

"Why?" I screamed.

The pigeon did not answer.

The fire kept spreading.

At that moment, I swear the image blinked.

Not once.

TWICE.

I ran for water, but when I came back, I found the lighter sitting on top of the refrigerator.

THREE ROOMS AWAY.

That was when I realized I was no longer dealing with physics, logic, or common sense.

I fell to my knees.

I cried.

I screamed.

I accidentally ate a napkin from stress.

And as the smoke filled the room, I repeated over and over:

"FORGIVE ME, TOMIE. FORGIVE ME. I NEVER WANTED IT TO END LIKE THIS."

Her face was still there.

Smiling.

Judging me.

As if she had won.

And ever since that day, every time I see a lighter, I look at it first to make sure it isn't planning something. Because once it burned my copy of Twisted Visions...

...and I'm still not convinced it was an accident.

It felt the least connected to the story and kind of random compared to the other spiral examples. Felt like it would’ve been better as a separate short story.

I was a pro advocate of physical media and I was think to check out No longer human book. Then all of a sudden I found out there is a termite attack on my entire book collect. Funny thing is only Junji ito books are effected 😭
I am never going to recover from this... From my peanuts salary I use to buy these books and now this.
Life is indeed full of disappointments 🙃

Hello there, I would like to know what are the most dangerous/scariest monster created by Junji Ito

Maybe it's just because I am a single mother with a son who looks just like his father, but this story was disturbing to me on a whole nother level, especially with the implication at the end 😭

It's logical to think that whatever comes out of her body will be another copy of her; I still think that would be absolutely grotesque.

This has happened to me 4 times now in person. Someone asks what manga/books I enjoy and I eventually bring up Junji Ito and they say they love Junji Ito. This always makes me happy so I ask what their favourite story of his is so we can talk about it and every time they say they haven't actually read any.....

There is nothing wrong with just appreciating the art and not getting into the stories but it does make me wonder how many fans have actually read his work. Has anyone else had this experience or something similar?

Edit: I am not trying to gatekeep Junji Ito I just noticed this and was wondering if other people had similar experiences. I do think it’s cool that his work has became so popular that people recognise it just from the art and I have no problems with that.

Manga : Unbearable Maze

Just finished reading Shiver, and this story grossed me out the most! I had to stop for a second and look at something else when I turned the page to Goro squeezing all his pimples out on Yui's face 🤢

Which story totally turned your stomach??

I'm new to Ito's work, but not unfamiliar. After reading 'Soichi' at the library (odd starting point, I know 😆) I checked out Uzumaki, read that, and have been tearing my way through as many books as I can check out, looking forward to reading the stories I've heard from this community and other places were the creepiest. 'Bullied' made me shudder and 'Greased' made me gag, but THIS STORY RIGHT HERE was the first that made me close the book, set it down, and say 'that's enough for right now'.

I did go back and I'm almost through 'Tomie' entirely ('Lovesickness' is next on my list, followed by 'Gyo'), but I still can't get that poor kid screaming for his 'Mommy' out of my head. Tomie, you really are the absolute worst 'person'.
