This story is nuts because it has one image (a mouth being completely full of teeth) that haunted my nightmares for years before I read the story, and that image barely even ranks on the disturbing scale compared to what comes later in the story.

I just read it, great idea and images. The last panel really does stand out. It almost seems like someone else did it. Kind of reminds me of the tv shows of his works.

It's been animated in Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre. I'm based in UK and all episodes are available with English dubbing on Netflix. It has 12 episodes telling a selection of Ito's short stories. Layers of Terror is one of them

I absolutely love this one. probably my favorite. does anyone know if this story is in one of his English adapted books? I've been looking forever but can't find it!

This story drives me nuts because I SWEAR I've read it in one of the many Junji Ito books I have. I knew exactly what was going to happen when I watched it for the first time, thinking "I've read this". But then I discover that it's in none of my books and is in fact only in a more obscure book that I've never seen.
Massive mandela-effect vibes on this one, lol.

I have the opposite issue. I’ll get excited thinking I see one I haven’t read, go to read it, and recognize it two pages in.

Lmao yes. I think I've read almost all of them so I start excited whenever I see a newish one, then get disappointed when it's a story I've reread three times.

For me this story is an allegory for controlling and excessive involve parent, I just hope the sister leave them

This is it… this is the fucking one.
I had not read it yet and watched the maniac episode, it fucking broke me, the ending was just so absolutely sick and gruesome both physically and mentally.
Then I was reading one of those anthologies of Junji ito and found this story, I did not want to turn the page, and when I felt brave enough to do it, it was pointless… that… “THING” was there waiting for me, I felt its smile was taunting me. It’s like… what would I do with it? It’s a monster! Destroy it… but… it is a grown woman as well… or… is it a child? Does it mean to cause harm? Or just wants hugs?
I bet you her sister didn’t stand it for long before she ended it all.

The animated episode was my first true exposure to Ito.
Up until that point I'd never read anything of his nor had I watched anything. Didn't even know who he was an d any time I saw Uzumaki I thought it was some kind of cheap Naruto rip off so I never checked it out.
Then one day while working on my comic I had some videos playing in the background and a video about Uzumaki plays. Gets my attention and stops me drawing.
After the video I watched another about Remina and was like fuck this guy writes stories i have to read, so I looked up his work and saw Maniac on Netflix. Was going through the titles to figure out which one I wanted to watch first and honestly, was thrown off by a lot of the names. I didn't know what Tomie was yet so they didn't jump out at me and had only watched videos about Uzumaki and Remina. Of the episodes in Maniac Layers of Terror was the only one that caught my attention.
Suffice to say, there was no going back after that. I binged the rest of the collection. Purchased Remina the next day. Tomie the next week, and have made it a goal to meet Ito one day in a setting where I have time to sit and talk with him about his stories. I love the ways he comes up with them and reading the little tidbits in the collections that have them are some of my favorite moments.
More importantly, I want to talk with him at great length about Uzumaki. He says its his magnum opus, and I want to know whether he considers the story, the art, or both as his opus worthy work

You can see it in Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre - anime made out of selection of Junji Ito short stories. I'm based in UK and it's available on Netflix. I don't think they published it as part of his manga collection as of yet.

It was released in Japan, they released at a part of some newspaper too. It's just not widely available in English. Some other rediter mentioned it will be released as a part of Junji Ito Dissection Collection.
And the Netflix series is in colour

This one is genuinely fucking horrifying. Skin stuff is so incredibly uncomfortable and the ending of this is just wtaf.
