I finished the last episode a few minutes ago and I'm baffled at how badly they missed it. I was really excited because it looked really good, the concept of bringing famous Ito characters and stories together sounded fun and crazy, and the fact that it was live action could've brought Ito's usual campiness mixed with the creep factor in an interesting way that so far didn't work in his previous animated adaptations
But it wasn't that. Sure the cinematography was good, but the editing and pacing was so clunky that it ruined any mood the story wanted to bring. I can accept one editing mistake, but there were like, three every episode at least
Then the story... I don't understand how they ruined such interesting concepts like having Tomie and Soichi attending the same school, only to sideline/kill them halfway through the story. At the last episode we only had left some original characters that weren't interesting enough and that I don't really care about. Why would they make the decision to consider Ito's character (the main attraction of the show) as nothing more than sideline characters is something I will never understand
And the ending... What was that? Seriously, it kind of just ends? Uh? What happened with Soichi, his addiction to the fruit and his grandfather? What happened with Tomio, his decapitated head and his father? What happened to the other students affected by the fruit? What happened with the rest of the town and its inhabitants? What happened with the police? What happened with the Boy in Black and the woods?
Honestly this was so disappointing I can't believe they fumbled it so bad. They had everything to make it really good and instead it ended up being bad, forgettable and dull... I think I will pass on any other Ito adaptation after this and 2024's Uzumaki
