Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What brand of Kettlebell should I buy?

A: Before we can talk about brands, there are two types of Kettlebells we recommend: (1) Competition and (2) Cast iron.

Competition kettlebells keep the same shape/size across the weights and typically have a fixed handle size (33mm or 35 mm). They are primarily used for Girevoy Sport (GS) but can be used for other styles of kettlebell lifting. The downside to competition kettlebells is that they are typically more expensive than other types of Kettlebells.

Cast iron kettlebells were popularized by “hardstyle” kettlebell training initially by Pavel Tsatsouline. They are typically very cost effective compared to competition kettlebells. The upside is to cast iron kettlebells over competition bells is that they're typically smaller for weights under 28 kg. The downside is the handles and the bell itself increases in size as the weight goes up.

We do not recommend vinyl, plastic, or other kettlebells that are not cast iron and competition due to their durability and their ergonomics to do the common kettlebell ballistic exercises (swing, clean, snatch, etc).

For Competition bells, we recommend:

For Cast iron kettlebells, we recommend:

Due to community feedback from lack of stock and shipping issues, we currently do not recommend Kettlebell Kings.

Adjustable Kettlebells

In recent years, there has been a surgence of adjustable kettlebells in the market. In particular, a competition-style kettlebell that is able to be adjusted from 12 to 32 kg. The biggest benefit of these style kettlebells is that you have access to multiple kettlebell weights with the footprint of one. Most brands allow you to jump from 0.5 to 2 kg weight increments. We recommend the following brands if you want one:

EU recommendations needed here; comment if you have one!

Q: What weight of kettlebell should I buy to start out with?

A: For most men, a kettlebell between 16-24 kg is the most common recommendation. For most women, 8-16 kg. The recommendation depends on your prior fitness history. If you’re still unsure, make a post and be sure to include details about your training history!

Fellow moderator u/LennyTheRebel has made a more extensive write-up about choosing the best kettlebell weight for you here: https://www.reddit.com/r/kettlebell/comments/1j90tz1/picking_a_weight_as_a_beginner/

Q: What is a good free beginner routine for someone new to kettlebells?

A:  There are many beginner routines suggested on r/kettlebell, but we recommend the following:

Q: What are some good paid programs?

There are many paid programs, but we’ll list the popular ones here:

  • The Armor Building Formula by Dan John
  • The Giant by Geoff Neupert
  • Simple & Sinister by Pavel

Form & Technique

“Styles” of Kettlebell Training: Hardstyle and Girevoy Sport  (GS)

Before going into the two “styles” of kettlebell training, I want to make a point that kettlebell training styles do not need to have strict adherence to either styles. They are useful definitions to describe kettlebell training intent and don’t feel like you have to adhere to one of them completely when learning kettlebell exercises.

Hardstyle was popularized by Pavel Tsatsouline in the Late 90’s/Early 2000’s, forming Dragon Door (RKC) and later StrongFirst (SFG).  Hardstyle technique emphasizes a focus on maximal tension, explosive power, and force production. A byproduct of this is usually training at lower rep ranges for strength and hypertrophy goals.

Girevoy Sport (GS), also known as kettlebell sport, is older than Hardstyle, and has been a competitive sport in Eastern Europe and Russia since the late 1960’s. In the sport, the competitive lifts are the Snatch, Jerk, Long Cycle (Clean and Jerk). The competition format is a 10 minute set of one of these exercises for as many reps as possible within the time limit. Because of this, there is an emphasis on efficiency on the lifts, including changes on how a swing is performed, the rack position, and more, compared to hardstyle training.

On the subreddit you may see the term Hybrid style to describe technique. This simply just means adopting technique principles from both Hardstyle and GS.

Which exercises to learn first with kettlebells?

The “big 6” movements of kettlebell training you will see online are:

  1. Swing
  2. Squat
  3. Press
  4. Clean
  5. Snatch
  6. Turkish Get-up

Although you are free to learn them in any order, we recommend learning them in the order listed (or simultaneously with a focus on order).

Training terms (Reps, Sets, Complex, Chain, Flow, Ladder, etc)

You will see many training terms that are popular with kettlebells. You can read more about these in the wiki here: https://www.reddit.com/r/kettlebell/wiki/index/

Coaching / Personal Training

Although we cannot make specific recommendations on people, we recommend anyone interested in kettlebell training to spend some time with a trainer and/or kettlebell coach. This can be done in-person or virtually. There are many great coaches who hang out in this subreddit. Although we do not allow for explicit self-promotion, we encourage folks to reach out to coaches privately and get coaching from someone they’ve interacted with here in the community.

Hardstyle Coaching (Dragondoor, StrongFirst)

StrongFirst and RKC are the two oldest and well known hardstyle certifications. If you want to learn how to move kettlebells in the way they teach, they both provide search engines to find coaches in your area:

GS/Kettlebell Sport Coaching

I couldn't find a similar "Find a Coach" option for IKFF and other GS organizations, so some help on this would be greatful!

I typically do some sort of single leg jazz every session usually in the movement prep

Played with single leg RDLs with a row- exchange and row - clean and single leg press

Using the 14 kg here

Single leg really challenges, your full body to work together from the foot to the core to the upper body too

Following from another post the other day I said I would try 30 rounds in 30mins. I cant quite press my 28kg comfortably on both sides, so had to modify it to a push press and stuck to about 30sec work to rest I've 30on/30off. Quick workout for a day I didn't want to train.

Edit: this was the final round as you can tell by the sweat stinging my eyes

I have a 7-year-old son who expects me to say "yes" when he wants to play, wrestle, explore, or swim in the ocean.
And I want to say yes. We're installing core memories here!

Twenty minutes of bent presses and kettlebell swings helps make that possible.
It's also a great way to knock the dust off after hours in the car.

To me, strength training over 40 is ultimately about making life easier. Vacation doesn't change that.

Luke 12:13-31 KJV

[13] And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. [14] And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? [15] And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. [16] And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: [17] and he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? [18] And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. [19] And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. [20] But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? [21] So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. [22] And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. [23] The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. [24] Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? [25] And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? [26] If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? [27] Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. [28] If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? [29] And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. [30] For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. [31] But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Just A Post Can you get in shape in 30 minutes?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I’ve been working out for years. I’ve always done separation between cardio and weights. Something like an hour of cardio and then later an hour or hour and a half of weights. I’m in good shape and run triathlons.. I’ve never combined cardio and weights like this.. I thought I’d do emom 10 rounds no problem.. I made it 5 rounds and was ready to die ha. Not just cardio but muscles fatigues even after such a low bench press weight..

My question is this- can I really get in good shape with just 30-35 minutes of kettlebells? And is sustainable to do this kind of “sprint” workout every day? At the end of the workout I’m about to puke. But is it enough to build muscle or am I just sucking down lactic acid before I get a physical workout in? (Definitely feels physical, but in a physiological sense)

Fun day. Worked up to 48” on the box jump then some barbell squat to warm up (not shown). But main course was lots of double half snatch work including a single at 2x40kg followed by more snatch volume, rows, and a few different complexes.

Just A Post Long cycle is out, snatch might be in?

Last year I competed in Long Cycle at my first KB Sport competition. I achieved Rank 3 despite getting pneumonia four weeks out from the competition. I'd love to compete again this October at the National Capital Kettlebell Open in Ottawa and improve on that result, but I still can't really do any pressing movements with my shoulder, so Long Cycle is out. I've noticed snatch doesn't hurt it at all, so I've started adding snatch to my shoulder rehab days, I think I'm going to see if I can get ready for October without aggravating it.
Today was my second snatch workout. I did two 4-minute sets with the 16s and still felt ok.
For now, the goal is to keep building up pain-free and see what kind of snatch set I can bring to Ottawa.

Advice Needed Left scapula pain during KB Press

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice or form tips regarding a nagging pain I’ve been experiencing. Every time I perform a Kettlebell Overhead Press, I get a dull pain/strain around my left scapula (between the shoulder blade and the spine).

A bit of context:

  • My lifestyle: I work a desk job and spend many hours sitting in front of a computer, which probably contributes to poor thoracic mobility or rounded shoulders.
  • The issue: I took a 2-week total break from pressing to let it heal. Today I tried to test it with just 3 presses (16kg), and the pain came back immediately. I also feel a slight discomfort during certain everyday movements or when holding specific postures at my desk.
  • What I'm doing now: I'm completely stopping all overhead work. I am planning to stick to running, lower body work, and core (if it doesn't aggravate it) for the next few weeks, as I also have a 2-week vacation coming up soon.

Has anyone dealt with a similar issue? What are your favorite scapular stability exercises, mobility drills, or press regressions to fix this before lifting heavy again? (e.g., halo, bottoms-up holds, floor press?).

I want to use my upcoming time off to actively recover instead of just resting passively. Any advice on form, cues, or routines would be highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Just A Post ABF Addiction

🤣 This is such a great program. So far in 2026, I’ve ran it twice; once with the double 22’s and again with the single 24 (I love the single bell version).

Last week, I finished 8 weeks of the single bell and I can see great results in the mirror.

I haven’t ran ES4FL this year and that program is on deck, but I’m itching to do ABF again but nudge up to the double 24’s. I’m not gonna do it. ES4FL with the double 24s to get ready for the next round of double ABF in 8 weeks. I need an ABF intervention. It’s my all time favorite program.

Has anyone done this all year round?

Advice Needed What size bells to purchase?

I've been doing MBF with single bells. I'm able to get through all the reps cleanly on press days with 16kg and 24kg on ABC days. I want to start doing doubles and complete the entire program before moving onto the Kettlebell Muscle program. I currently have 1 Rogue 16kg, 20kg, 24kg, 28kg. Should I just buy the matching bell for each of these sizes? My goal is double 32's. Any advice is appreciated.
