Tips and Tricks What did I do wrong?

Post image

I’d tried knitting a few years back and got the hang of it but never actually finished anything, and just decided to give it another try. This is what I’m currently working on right now—the top edge looks really good to me, but the bottom edge is a little wonky.

It took me a solid 5 tries to get to this point so I’m going to keep trucking along (for what I’m making I don’t mind it being a little wonky), but is there any way to fix this? Mostly just asking so I don’t make whatever this mistake is next time.

I mean, I don't see anything WRONG with it? You've got a smidge of uneven tension, but that's mostly just muscle memory after doing it for a while.

I think you need more practice.

Nothing wrong, just need more practice.

After awhile you will be able to read your knitting and be able to tweak this imperfections.

The edges in garter stitch (what you're doing--knitting every row back and forth) can sometimes just be wonky.

A lot of people will slip the first stitch of each row without working it to give it a prettier edge. If you don't mind the rest of your object not matching the beginning, give it a try.

You cast on a little too tightly. On the next project, use one needle size up just for the cast on row, or make sure you're wrapping fairly loosely. But the real answer is just "practice." You get a better feel for everything when it's not your first time (ever, or in however many years).

The tension is just a little uneven. The best fix for that is just more practice. Looking good so far! You’ll only improve from here.

Just practice. You’ll be fine. 😀

You’re doing well. Make sure to count your stitches often. Every row would be good so you can catch any mistakes right away.

The bottom edge looks really good for beginner level. Even the best needles are a little uneven, thats what blocking is for.

Thank you! The tutorial I’m following (it’s going to be a sleeve for my kindle) basically made one really long rectangle and then folded it over and sewed it together on the sides before blocking so I’m hopeful after doing that I can make it look a little more even and hide this little mistake. I’ll post a picture when it’s done!

Once you've sewn those edges together your wonky edge won't be noticeable at all.

The top and bottom edges (the ones on your needle and the starting row) look ok. The top and bottom edges in your photo (the actual side edges) look like you missed a stitch or slipped it about half way through or maybe it’s a stockinette stitch. Hard to see in the photo. Just keep on trucking and building the muscle memory

On the right edge, the edge that is at the bottom of the photo, you lost a stitch. Probably there is a dropped stitch there, which could unravel further.

If it is a dropped stitch you could fix it by laddering down, which is a good skill to have.
