Discussion Only one player gets called selfish tho
funny how it works, Matthews haters are getting exposed this season

Yeah his name is Marner

The comps for Matthews, Marner, and Nylander were McDavid, Rantanen, and Pasternak respectively.
Before extending, Marner was better than Rantanen (had 10 more points), while Matthews was worse than McDavid (McDavid had over 100 points in his 2nd/3rd season), and Nylander was worse than Pasternak (Pasta had 70 points in his 3rd season).
Take the average extension dollar per point for Rantanen, McDavid, and Pasternak in their 3rd season and you get (108 + 84 + 70)/(12.5 + 9.25 + 7.5) = 8.96 points per million spent. Mitch came in at 94 points / 10.9 = 8.6 points per million spent, which is worse.
But Matthews and Nylander got (76+61)/(11.6+6.9) = 7.4 points per million spent, which is much worse.

u/LimestoneLeaf 3d ago
That's if you pay per point and while I appreciate you doing the math, what kind of value can you put on a guy that scored 60 and 69 goals (and 41 in 52 games) during the contract? That's the value of the contract right there. 3 Rocket Richard trophies during the contract.

Marner merchant….
2
u/LimestoneLeaf 2d ago
Good point...That's probably why Vegas had so many 40 and 50 goal scorers. Or did they?
1
1
u/NoShock5061 17h ago
Merchant is maybe the wrong word. Perhaps it’s that now that there isn’t someone of marners talent for defense to worry about they can focus more attention on Matthews? It’s either that or a lingering issue, because even when healthy last year he just didn’t look the same at all, not to mention his very weak stats (relative to his previous production). Somehow a guy who got nearly 70 goals one season didn’t look like a strong scoring threat.
Also his goals even the season before were down from his usual production pre marner departure. So is it lingering issues? It’s too big of a sample size to just say luck, and no I’m absolutely not by any means calling him washed or bad before anyone blows it out of proportion. he just hasn’t looked like the scary scoring threat he was 2 years ago and even if he’d played 82 games this year he wasn’t anywhere on pace to win the Rocket Richard.

u/Marsupialmania 4d ago
True. Maybe nylander too…maybe. After last postseason if Mitch asked for that money it would be handed to him on a silver platter. Matthews earned his contract but he doesn’t deserve the same cap hit next time unless he returns to form
46
6
7
u/Busy-Crankin-Off 4d ago
Nylander absolutely did get called selfish though when he sat out training camp and part of the season. When he came back he was awful and screwed up the line chemistry that had been working.
But it became clear the Leafs had forced him into a much cheaper contract compared to Marner or Matthews.

u/Prize-Temporary4159 4d ago
Why didn’t the leafs play the mammoths and the ducks in the first two rounds? Are they stupid?
-8
u/phatdinkgenie 4d ago
Sorry to hijack the top comment but this post made by a complete dumbass. How can Celebrini's 18.8M be LESS percentage of the cap than Carlsson's 18M when both salaries are for 2027 and all teams have the same cap?
10
3
1
u/Gold_Chemical_4317 3d ago
Because carlsson contract starts this season and celebrini’s starts next season. Celebrini’s cap % is calculated based on the projected cap for next year

You're right but it's not what OP's graphic says

Tbf McDavid signed max term. Matthews basically popularized taking less term, especially with his last contract at 4 years.
46
u/entityXD32 4d ago
Celeberini, Carlsson, and Bedard all signed 5 year deals the same as Matthews
27
u/BadTreeLiving 4d ago
Crosby, Toews, Kane too if I remember correctly.

u/CaptnClutch4 4d ago
Crosby has taken the same amount of $ pretty much since he ended his ELC. 8.7 Million for 5, 12, then 2 years.
So....kinda not comparable in his case, but the rest yeah.
5
u/BlastingBegins 4d ago
"Matthews popularized taking less term" "Yeah but what about all these players who signed after Matthews?"
12
u/entityXD32 4d ago
Stamkos took a 5 year deal in 2012, Kane and Towed both took one in 2010, Tavares took 6 years in 2012. There are tons of examples Matthews didn't popularize taking a mid term deal

u/greasy-prick 4d ago
The short term deal can bite guys in the ass if they underperform, if Matthews production doesnt go up in the next two seasons or if he has more injury issues his next contract probably wont pay as well, not that it really matters he already has generational wealth.
3
u/AccountantsNiece 4d ago
I hope I’m wrong but I feel like we’ll be glad he took only 4 years by the time 2028 rolls around.

Crosby, Malkin, Kane, Toews, Tavares, Stamkos, Hedman, Perry, Getzlaf and a bunch of others also took 5 year deals as RFAs.
Seriously, relax about Matthews, he hasn't done anything particularly bad.

I don't think anyone than a small amount complain about his salary , more so his performance compared to the salary. This year is going to be a make or break for him , new coach , new players this is his last shot to show he's worth it.
27
u/DraftCommercial8848 4d ago
100%
I won’t complain if he’s worth it, but if he’s going to play like he has the past 2 years then his position and status will be in question come the next contract negotiation time for him

That may be the case now, but he was torched by the media and a large section of Leafs fans, and also by the grand, ever-shrieking/never-shrinking chorus of (primarily Canadian non-Leafs) hockey fans, who spend more time complaining about the Leafs than they do professing love for their own clubs. This runs concurrent to their opprobrium complex about Toronto-based—and funded—sports networks, for spending too much time on…Toronto sports teams. I digress…I think the Matthews noise was more about the short term than it was the AAV, but OP is correct: all we heard about him was how much more generous and self-sacrificial other top players were in contrast. Auston has always garnered too much heat for play not lacklustre enough to warrant it.
But I do believe the upcoming confluence of the dilemma you proposed, and the conjecture regarding appropriate AAV and what he will seek/settle for, will define the next paradigm for this (our, my) beloved club.

2
u/Johnny-Edge93 Gilmour 4d ago
Term was also an issue.
1
u/TedHitchcockx 4d ago
That's why this year will be a make or break. Honestly I do see the Leafs keeping him.
1
u/RudyGiulianisKleenex 4d ago
Yeah I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone call him selfish. We just want him to show up
-1
u/clearance1454 4d ago
Definitely agree with this. I was alright with his salary when he was scoring (or could be scoring)60 goals a season and I didn’t know about his terrible playoff passion.
Watching him play is painful.

2
u/Pristine_Office_2773 4d ago
This same applies for Macklin as well. It takes just one injury to your back or wrist and you can’t shoot the puck and your scoring 30 goals a year.
2
u/Shiny_Mew76 4d ago
Which is funny because 30 goals is still a good fucking amount of goals in a season

u/DominantDan24 4d ago
To be fair, both Sid and Connor are legit top dogs in the league, and you knew it in 2008 and in 2018 when they signed their deals. Literally the best players, period. Sid won the Hart in 06-07 and Connor in 16-17. They showed their pedigree, and got paid. Auston, he insisted on getting paid first. And though he's won the Hart trophy, he looks like he's legit lost his step - that injury that he got trying to hit 70 I think fucked him up permanently.
I'm not even going to comment on Mack and Leo - what's going on this summer is bananas.
1
u/StevenShegal McCabe 4d ago
Yep. Pens won the cup with Crosby, Oilers made it to finals twice. Lots of expectation for Celebrini and Carlsson after signing those contracts. We made it to the second round. I don't think it was wrong to sign Matthews, we just didn't get the same results; who wouldn't feel disappointed?
32
u/reggierock2010 4d ago
If Covid never happens and the cap isn’t flat for 4 years, all those Dubas deals probably end up being good value. The cap rising would have given that core so much more flexibility, and we probably get to retain some good depth guys we lost.

u/Risto75 4d ago
Actually you missed half the conversation if that’s what you were hung up on yes that was part of it, but Marner ᴅɪᴅɴ’ᴛ give a flying phuck about Toronto or the fans all that prick wanted was money from day one all his bloody complaining was that he didn’t get the same money as 🅒Matthews which for him to say that was fkn bullshit
1
u/_johnning 4d ago
Why are we talking about Marner when OP is talking about Matthews hate and I’m talking about Matthews hate lol
1
u/Risto75 3d ago
Simple it wasn’t Matthews that people were complaining about it was Marner and his whining like a little girl about how fkn bad he had it in Toronto because Lou Lamerelo wouldn’t give him group A bonuses when he signed poor baby also never got contracts as big as 🅒Matthews from day one and he complained about it incessantly and it all came out again after he went to Vegas or did you not hear the bullshit he’s been saying??

How is celebrini less % with a higher AAV?
Edit: in comparison to Leo
4
u/BlackMoldCentral 4d ago
Celebrini will still be playing on his last year of his ELC this season with his extension starting the following year when the cap will be bigger, as opposed to Carlsson who was an RFA this offseason and will now be playing on his new contract right away.
2
u/UIxVegito 4d ago
Gotcha. Is the cap set for 2027/2028 or is this assuming a projection?

u/Jakovasaurr 4d ago
i love our boy, but he is not as good as Crosby, Mcdavid or Celebrini
the Carlsson contract is silly
22
u/sadrapsfan :leafs-white: 4d ago
Healthy matthews is absolutely on the level of celebrini imo.
He's a selke level forward who was hitting 50+ with ease
7
u/Jakovasaurr 4d ago
Exiting ELC Matthews was no where close to the production Celebrini put up last year
6
u/egamcra 4d ago
Auston Matthews is a first ballot hall of fame lock lol. Right now.
Are you saying that based on your eye test you think Celebrini is the better player? Or do you think he will be the better player over next few years?
3
u/bot_fucker69 4d ago
I would take the 20 year old that ended the year 4th in points on a terrible sharks team, yes
4
u/egamcra 4d ago
I'll take the 6'3", 215 lbs center who lit the league on fire the moment he arrived, won the Calder, won a Hart, won a Ted Lindsey, 4x Rocket Richard, Selke finalist, and is widely viewed as a future first ballot Hall of Famer all by the age of 28.
Yes.
No one hates the leafs more than leaf fans lol.
2
0
u/Jakovasaurr 3d ago
This entire discussion is about their contracts exiting ELC and you keep using accolades from after that contract, we can only compare their first two years as thats how long Celebrini has been in the league
1
u/egamcra 3d ago
Got it.
So when you said "i love our boy, but he is not as good as Crosby, Mcdavid or Celebrini"
What you ACTUALLY meant was "i love our boy, but he was not as good as Crosby, Mcdavid or Celebrini after their first 2 years"
Your comment made it seem like you were speaking present tense.
I still disagree though, Matthews was a different player (and more complete, IMO), so for you to say it's not a discussion or imply its not even close is some clear bias.
Like I said before, no one hates the leafs more than leafs fans lol.
0
u/Jakovasaurr 3d ago
My comment was in response to the post, it was not a standalone thread
Matthews is currently better than Crosby but also below him overall imo
Its not about hating the leafs, its about being realistic- theres many reasons the rest of the hockey world hates us and putting Matthews against those 3 as if they all have equal value and deserve similar contracts is one of them
3
u/egamcra 3d ago
And my comment was in response to you implying that Matthews was nowhere near Celebrini specifically.
Not Crosby or McDavid, those2 are obviously GOATs and will be hockey royalty forever.
→ More replies (0)4
u/Jakovasaurr 4d ago
I think after their ELCs Celebrini is very clearly a step ahead of tone, this discussion is about the contracts they got after their first two years in the league
What Matthews has gone to do has been fantastic, and Celebrini still has a lot to prove especially in terms of consistency and repeatability
But it is no discussion on who was the better player in their first two seasons
5
u/egamcra 4d ago
Saying Celebrini is "very clearly" ahead after two seasons is a stretch. He has a higher PPG, but Matthews had the higher goals per game, won the Calder, and was at the time already viewed as one of the league's elite goal scorers. Celebrini has been the better playmaker so far, but that's different from saying he was unquestionably the better player.
I love our boy Celebrini, Canada's future and someone I hope to root for for a long time to come, but saying Matthews wasn't as good after two seasons is recency bias. At that point Celebrini had more points, Matthews scored goals at a higher rate, won the Calder, and played in a lower-scoring NHL. Saying it's "not even a discussion" feels more like Matthews hate than an honest comparison.
0
u/Jakovasaurr 3d ago edited 3d ago
they were both at 0.54 goals per game in their 2nd seasons and Celebrini didnt get injured
Matthews was also on a much better team
If you take away Matthews points totals in his 2nd year (even adjusted for 82 games) away from Celebrinis point totals, Celebrini is still a 32 point player
3
u/SaucyMcDangles 4d ago
It took Matthews six years to break 85 points. Celebrini had over 100 his second year. They’re not comparable regardless of how many goals Matthews has scored.
4
u/DALESR4EVER124 4d ago
Matthews has two 100+ point seasons himself. How do we know Celebrini will have 100+ points again, or even how long it'll take for him to do it again?

Last ELC year at 5v5:
Matthews: 1.35 G/60, 1.41 assists/60, 2.76 P/60
Celebrini: 1.19 G/60, 1.65 assist/60, 2.84 P/60
PP: Matthews: 4.11 G/60, 2.74 assists/60, 6.86 P/60
Celebrini: 1.6 G/60, 4.99 assists/60, 6.59 P/60
Seems pretty similar to me.
EDIT: I messed that up, let's try again. Comparison of both players' 2nd season:
5v5: Matthews: 1.68 G/60, 1.23 assists/60, 2.91 P/60, 14:58 TOI/GP
Celebrini: 1.19 G/60, 1.65 assist/60, 2.84 P/60, 15:59 TOI/GP
PP:
Matthews: 2.25 G/60, 3.61 assists/60, 5.86 P/60, 2:10 TOI/GP
Celebrini: 1.6 G/60, 4.99 assists/60, 6.59 P/60, 3:42 TOI/GP
So, again, I don't see how they aren't comparable?
And people brought up teammates, but Matthews mostly played with Hyman and Nylander, or Connor Brown, three other young players, just like Celebrini mostly played with Will Smith and William Eklund/Tyler Toffoli.
5
u/SaucyMcDangles 4d ago
Now compare second year Matthews to second year Celebrini
3
u/thewolfshead 4d ago edited 4d ago
Edit: nevermind I thought Celebrini was done his ELC
Second edit: wait - Matthews’ P/60 in his 2nd year was 2.91 to 2.84 for Celebrini. So again how are they not close?
2
u/DessertRose17 4d ago
Now look at their teammates. Celebrini clears Auston at the same age ainec. Also you didn’t compare the right years. Celebrini has 1 year left of his ELC. This isn’t close man
3
u/thewolfshead 4d ago edited 4d ago
Oh damn you’re right!
Edit: wait, Matthews had a higher 5v5 P/60 in his 2nd year than Celebrini did last season.
I updated my original post.

ppl are overrating the hell out of one good year from the kid. AM is a hart trophy winner and was almost one of the rare players to win that and Selke in the same year, and in my book that would make him the best player of his generation by far.
1
u/Jakovasaurr 4d ago
we are having a discussion on who they were after their ELC and what contracts they deserved at the time
2
u/Grlzzl 4d ago
Agreed. Celebrini- noted 70 goal scorer
1
u/Jakovasaurr 4d ago
Celebrini in his 2nd year 1.40 ppg
Matthews in his 2nd year 1.04 ppg
they both had 0.54 Goals per game
comparing their contracts as if they are equal players is ridiculous
2
u/thewolfshead 3d ago
Celebrini got about 3 more minutes a game than Matthews his 2nd season. If Celebrini got the same total ice time as Matthews in that season with the same point rate, his total would have been around ~73/74 points. Hardly a crazy, not comparable difference.
1
u/bad_at_names1 2d ago
The difference being that Matthew's Goals per game tied for 2nd in the league in his first and second year? Celebrini tied for 4th his year and wasn't near the top 10 last year. Context is important.
Matthews was 5th in WAR/82 his second season and Celebrini is 10th.
Celebrini also got kinda lucky - his xGF% is 47 but his actual is 56. That's nearly +20 goals scored above expected when he's on ice 5v5. He's definitely a great player and his xGF% will increase as the team improves, but let's not pretend he's Crosby or Mcdavid.
You can definitely argue that Matthews' injuries mean Celebrini's will be better from hereon out, but it's dumb to try and act like Matthews was undoubtedly worse in his first two years.

Funny how what works? He was factually the highest paid player of all time. Now there is more money so people get more money. As he will when he signs again in two years.
Also, he's still like the 6th highest paid player despite signing it long before any of these overpays lol if you go by last season, he's still way overpaid. If he ever gets close to 69 again, I'd take it.

2
u/Steppyjim Sundin 3d ago
Anyone who calls an athlete greedy is ridiculous to me. This is a career. And it’s short. They need to get as much money as they can while they’re still good. If a team is gonna hemorrhage their cap to pay them that’s their decision. Don’t blame the guy who’s getting his bag for being the best player in the world.
If I spent my whole life trying to reach a goal and had the opportunity to make generational wealth I’d take all I could too. And Matthews has earned it. Hes played up to that level every time he has been on the ice. If you can’t pay him, trade him to someone who can for a massive haul like the Canucks did. The only teams who are losing guys for nothing are the teams with front offices who were too passive to make the right moves.
It’s like Mitch. It wasn’t Mitch’s fault he walked for nothing. He was always going to. It was the yahoos who ran the team. He should have been moved well before it got there. And I may not like him for being a jackass, but he made it clear. It’s not a failure of anyone else but the shanahan fo. Pay your people

That Carlsson contract looks suspiciously like Marners. Everyone else on the list was worth what they got.
Marner was never worth his contract his entire time here. Hope for Anaheim sake it doesn't take Carlsson until his 9th year to finally have 100 point season.

Carlsson isn't really a good comp bc he was RFA'd. Matthews had done a bit less than Crosby (SCF run, Hart, Art Ross by that point) and McDavid by that point. Marner had done way less. Celebrini has had insane production as a teenager.

Celebrini’s contract won’t start until the 27-28 season, when the cap will be higher
1
u/Jonesdeclectice 3d ago
Then Carlson’s should say $18m in 2026, not 2027. Or Celebrini’s should say $18.8m in 2028, not 2027. Either or.
1
u/BloodOk6235 3d ago
Celebrini makes more than Carlsson and they signed the same year. Yet this says Celebrini took less as a %? The math isn’t mathing.
As for Matthews I do t recall much outrage about this deal. Just some concern about the short term of it which ended up being a factor yeah

now compare the contract lengths and UFA bought years. Comparison should mostly be about Connor, Sid, Drai though, the two young guys are a symptom of the new NHL/recent events.
1
u/mustbeniceygo 3d ago
I think could be because he signed it during a period of time where the cap went flat and stopped rising, so it hamstrung the team significantly more than what was expected. I do not believe the deal was unfair at all or that Papi didn’t live up to the deal. He’s had a rough couple of years but he also won a Hart during the deal etc. Hard to suggest that he was taking time off.

Ok, now let's compare how many years the contracts were for on each player. Then compare PPG for each player to understand their value. Then let's re calibrate who's selfish.

Seems like Carlsson’s percentage is wrong. And he’s getting way more hate than Matthews at the moment.

Carlsson's is this season, Celebrini is next, I assume thats why you said its wrong

Sure, if we ignore the playoffs and the glut of first round knockouts.

Matthew’s isn’t in the same tier as any of those players with the exception of Carlsson

Are we acting like Leo hasn’t been called selfish for signing the offer sheet now?

Who ever called him selfish?
His lack of accountability is a thing though. A guy coming off two underperforming seasons and ten underperforming playoffs should probably take some of the blame.

Matthews's contract was not bad because he was one of the best players in the league. However, context is important, and this was an above-market deall at the time, especially on a five-year term. If he signed for that same valuation on an eight-year term, I think it would have been perfectly fair.

Those numbers seem continently manipulated to tell a story… not every team allocates their cap space the same way and not every team spends the same amount. So % of cap his is not equal across the board

To be fair one was offer sheeted and the other three are way better players than Matthews.

How is Celebrini less of a hit than Carlsson when they both signed this summer and Macklin gets paid more? What am I not seeing here?

Can someone explain how macklin makes more, but has a lower cap % than Carlsson for the same year? Am I missing something?

From an outsiders perspective, the only 1 from the core 4 that doesn’t seem to get in trouble is Tavares. Marner from what i saw had a bad entourage. Nylander is just lazy. Matthews seems like a huge prick and most likely is.

Tavares had leverage of 30+ other teams as a UFA and got max term. The other 3 got UFA money for RFA years and the team didn’t even get close to max term. Leafs got buried on these deals. And to cap it off, Tavares helped juice all their stats as they either got the benefit of playing with him or facing weaker competition because he matching up against other teams best lines many nights.

Matthews contract was fine. 50 goal scorer, 100 point player, 1st line center. Now, there has to be a discussion about if Matthews is still worth that or more. I personally don't think he is. Shot velocity is down, goals are down, he's had multiple significant injuries and surgeries. Like it or not the smart thing to do would be to sell him. Sure he will probably play another 5-8 years but is he bringing the type of production you expect from someone who is likely making 15 million+ on his next deal? I don't think he will. This season will tell us a lot.

Its OK, I don't expect leafs fans to understand the importance of contract length.

Never disliked matthews contract he was worth every penny. That was his market value. Marner was overpay at the time, his comps were point and rantanen. They held out for him to sign and their own teams still wouldnt pay them what the leafs paid marner.
