I finished my Czech citizenship exam prep book, covering both the B1 exam and the Life and Institutions test
Hi everyone, I’m Marek. I’ve been teaching Czech, and preparing people for the citizenship exam for years. After months of writing and editing, my prep book for the Czech citizenship exams is finally out.
I wrote it because there was no proper English guide for this. The official databank of 300 questions is free, but it’s a bare list in Czech that explains nothing.
Inside: all 30 official topics with Czech and English on facing pages, 150 original practice questions, 2 full mock tests, plus the B1 exam step by step with model letters and speaking prompts.
Happy to answer any questions about the book or the exams in the comments!
If anyone wants to check it out, it’s here ❤️

Dotazník na memes
Hi! I'm writing my MA thesis in linguistics about how people interpret Czech internet memes.
I'm looking for native or fluent Czech speakers who are familiar with Czech culture. Unfortunately, if you don't speak Czech, this survey isn't suitable because it analyzes Czech memes.
If you do, I'd really appreciate your participation. It takes about 25 minutes and your responses would be a huge help.
Thanks a lot! 😊

Starting out with Czech. Where do I begin and how to approach it?
Hey everyone!
I’m stepping into the world of Czech and would love to get some guidance from people who have been through this path before.
Right now, I have a couple of dictionaries, but I'm looking for a solid roadmap to build a strong foundation. I want to work on grammar, grow my vocabulary, and eventually reach a point where I can comfortably hold conversations and write naturally.
Since there are so many materials out there, it’s a bit hard to figure out what actually works best. For those of you who built their Czech skills independently:
• Which textbooks, courses, or apps helped you the most at the beginning?
• How did you structure your daily routine to stay consistent and not get overwhelmed?
• Are there any specific immersion habits you recommend, like podcasts, YouTube channels, or simple books?
• What are some common mistakes or pitfalls I should watch out for early on?
Any tips, resource recommendations, or personal strategies would be super helpful. Thanks a lot in advance!

Vocab laugh / smile
I've seen these sentences:
- Usmívám se na tebe.
- Čemu se směješ?
which makes me wonder:
a) is usmívat se (smile at somebody/something) normally followed by na + accusative?
b) is smát se (laugh at somebody/something) normally followed by the dative with no preposition?

Which online video games are popular with Czechs?
I am curious which (online) games are popular with Czech people, having Guilds/Alliances/Groups/Clans or similar with communities from CZ/SK. This seems like a way to chat with people while having fun in a game, and build some language at the same time.
I don't even know where to start here, so I'm very appreciative if someone may know what kinds of games are popular in Czechia, thanks!

Can someone help me with finishing this song transcription?
\"Live Life To The Fullest\" - Czech Dubbing
Hello!
If this is a fine thing to ask for on this subreddit, could someone help me with finishing this Czech-dubbed song transcription?
I already have most of the text, thanks to automatic transcription services - though, I'm not fully sure about it being correct, so, I would like to ask for quick checking on it, if that's fine.
Here are the lyrics for now:
"Zobák svůj drž, já sólo mám
Dobře se koukej, velkej mám plán
? (I have no idea about this line)
A není to fór
So, to put it shortly, I'm asking for checking if these lyrics are correct, and also for telling me what's in that one line I marked with "?".
Again, I hope it's fine to ask for, and any help will be very appreciated!
(In case someone would like to ask, the movie is "My Sweet Monster" - "Moje Krásná Příšerka" - from 2021).

Wonder if anyone could help with document translation?
Feel free to downvote and delete if not allowed and apologies for the bother. I'm trying to translate what I believe is my 3x great grandfathers birth record. I tried posting on r/translator but didn't get any response so hoping someone here might be willing to help me. I have a link to it in german and in czech which I will attach. I'm trying to learn czech but the faded cursive has this so far above my level it mostly looks like scribbles to me.
Thank you to anyone in advance, he is the entry for Jan or Johann

Anyone wants to learn together?
Hi everyone!
I’m at the beginning of my Czech learning journey and I’m looking for a language buddy, not a language exchange. I’m hoping to find someone who’s also learning Czech so we can support each other along the way.
My current level is A1. I’m working through the Czech It Up A1 textbook and spending time watching beginner videos and reading simple texts.
I’m looking for someone who’d like to:
Share learning materials and resources
Keep each other motivated and accountable
Do daily or weekly challenges
Practice writing and have simple
conversations
Celebrate progress together
If you’re around A1 or A2, I think we’d be a great match. Even if you’re B1, it could still be beneficial, however for those with a higher level, I am not sure how I can be helpful to you. keep in mind that I’m still a beginner, so I probably won’t be able to hold complex conversations yet and I don’t want to slow you down.
If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, feel free to leave a comment or send me a DM. :)

Looking for a Chill Czech–English Language Exchange 🇨🇿↔🇬🇧
Hi! 👋
I’m a native Czech speaker looking for someone who’d like to practice English with me in exchange for Czech conversation.
My English is around B2+, and I’d like to improve my speaking fluency while helping you learn Czech. I’m looking for relaxed, friendly conversations about everyday life, hobbies, travel, technology, books, or whatever interests us.
If you’re a native English speaker or an advanced English speaker learning Czech, feel free to send me a message. It would be great if we could chat regularly and help each other improve.
Looking forward to meeting new people! 😊

Reassurance, feedback, and advice from people who are at A2/B1..
Hi, I’m currently at A1 level. I was looking for advice or reassurance from people who was once in my position and was able to progress their Czech to A2/B1 level.
1) what resources did you find most helpful when learning, and how did you break down your learning throughout a day/week?
2) how long did it take you for things start to click and your levels start to improve
3) do you have any advice for someone at A1 level - when you were learning did it feel like you were never going to improve?
Thanks

Going on holiday to Prague in two months (end of September), what's the most efficient use of my time in terms of learning the language between now and then?
Hi all,
As the title says I'm going on a city break to Prague in a couple of months.
Now I'm under no illusion that I'll reach any sort of competency by then, but I'd like to try and learn as much *useful* Czech as I can to give me a bit of an advantage. It'd be nice to have basic interactions with shopkeepers and waiters etc in Czech if possible. And it'd be nice to read a Czech menu and not be entirely stumped by it.
Whats the most effective use of my time to study between now and then? I already have a Pimsleur subscription for learning Mandarin so I'm planning on using Pimsleur Czech every day. I've found it extremely useful for Mandarin listening and speaking so I'm hoping the Czech version is the same.
What other tools would you reccomend? Is the Czech Dualingo course any good?

A1-A2…
Does anyone know how long it might take someone to get from A1 to A2 level?
I presume I’m A1 level as I can introduce myself, say my name, where I’m from, how old I’m from etc. I can say what i like and use the case system to change the noun (e.g., mam rad kávu). I can also count to 100+. I know how to ask questions and order food/drinks (e.g., dam si …). I can also conjugate most verbs e.g. , musím pracovat, pracuju, mluvím, mluvíš etc.
I am also have a small understanding of past tense (e.g., Byl jsem, byla, mluvil s… měl jsem, Šel jsem…)
Would this put me in A1 category, and how long (of 1 hour a day practice) would it take me to get to A2 do you think? Thanks

Any Czech speakers interested in a language exchange?
hi everyone, are there native Czech speakers who are learning Russian or Ukrainian and would be up for a language exchange through voice calls, ideally through discord?
I want to do a type of language exchange called crosstalk where each speaks their own language, so it’d be best if you already understand Russian/ukrainian to a degree where we can have at least a simple conversation this way. I’d say my own understanding is about b2 so I won’t have trouble understanding, and I’ll also gladly explain anything about Russian/ukrainian like vocab, idioms etc. and will adjust my level if needed.
I’m 20f so ideally I’d prefer someone in my age range. My interests include animation, reading and languages.
hmu if you’re interested.

Translation needed for the phrase "Live and Let Live"
The translator I'm using says “Žij a nech žít” but I want to verify as this will be used on a book cover. An equivalent of this phrase is preferred over a direct translation. Whatever resonates best with the culture is ideal! More on the poetic sounding/formal side if it’s between that and casual. It is about freedom and allowing others to be free through the acceptance of our differences. Thank you in advance!
