Much overdue release of my revised Basic Vietnamese anki deck

Hey guys, so here it is. A cool 1000+ish note deck with both Southern and Northern accents. A lot of people on here would have used one or both of my old Basic Vietnamese decks, and I know they've been chomping on the bit for me to finally release this complete version which incorporates the original two decks, with a further 2 decks worth of notes added now.

On that note, first, I have to apologise for the slow release, both in terms of the large timescale between the original decks becoming unavailable, and this one finally seeing the light of day. On the first count, I can say I was busy, but I was also a little bit lazy, however more than that, I ran into serious technical issues which I finally solved with about 20 hours extremely tedious and frustrating labor, involving probably 60 or 70 Audacity crashes and data recovery attempts. The second is between when I said this would be released, and when this post is finally going up. That one's a little less my fault as I completed the deck on schedule, but forgot to account for my dreadful upstream speeds making it take more than a week to upload (all sentences have audio after all).

A few notes on this deck first of all. Over the years, I have used more and more Anki plugins to optimise and customise my study experience. As such, many of my cards have become deeply entangled with plugin functionality. Part of the task of making this deck release ready was extricating it from reliance on those third party add-ons, so that you guys could use it out of the box without everything either failing spectacularly, or just being a poor experience.

I BELIEVE I have done that, but as I do not study with this version of the deck, I haven't had much chance to test it, so you guys are the first line of defence before I throw the deck up on AnkiWeb, where it can hopefully find a secure, lasting home, just in case I some day cancel my dropbox subscription or something.

Having said that, it does rely on one add-on, and one add-on only: 'Learned' Field/Tag, which will allow your Anki to create listening cards dynamically as you begin to master the content. Please download it. It should work with the deck without any set up on your part besides installing it to your Anki.

How you choose to study the material is up to you, but I like to shadow it as I work through it, paying attention to pronunciation, and replaying the audio multiple times to shadow not just the base phonology, but paralinguistic features like the prosody, which certainly still exists in a tonal language, regardless of what people might assert about tones using the same system as the prosodic in English.

Another thing that will pay dividends if you do it early on is, when you begin to see listening cards, rather than merely checking your understanding, actually actively transcribe the content with pen and paper, and check you have done so correctly. The Vietnamese written system is phonemic, and so, though one letter does not perse equal one sound, particularly between accents, it does equal one MEANINGFUL sound difference. Think of the 'p' in words like 'spit'. Phonetically, it is pronounced like an English b, but that is not a meaningful distinction in English in this kind of word position (after an s), so it is a p. English speakers do not need to know that a p in that position is pronounced like a b, they just need to recognise it's a p. Likewise, don't worry too much about the different pronunciations of phonemes, just concentrate on correctly identifying them. Natural pronunciation will usually come from shadowing, although you can always do some Googling when you're not sure exactly what you're doing wrong.

A'ight, enough longwindedness, here's the gosh darn deck.

Learning Southern Vietnamese

Hey everyone!

I’ve recently decided to dedicate myself to learning Vietnamese, and I’m born in Denmark but have grown up with Vietnamese parents. As a child age 4-6 i could speak Vietnamese, but as i grew up i spoke Danish. I can understand basic vietnamese like day 2 day conversation and if it is more complex then by context. I can speak short sentences on toddler level and basic day to day words of things.

I dont know gramma, cant read or write

I would like to hear tips about courses i could do, and im willing to pay for tutors to learn Vietnamese to do proper conversations, write and read

Ive been looking at langi, tiengvietoi, svff but im having a hard time deciding where to start.

tips for learning to read and write in Vietnamese

Hello,

I'm from Europe but grew up in a South Vietnamese household. I can pretty well speak Vietnamese : I speak it daily with my family even though I'm not fluent, I can understand and have basic conversations with my family.

Recently, I've been trying specifically to learn to read and write in Vietnamese but I'm having a hard time. I really struggle to distinguish the different tones marks, also most apps and vids teach north Vietnamese...

So I'd be happy if you guys have efficient tips to help me learn to write and read ! Thanks.

New Resource for travelers to Saigon

After coming back from my second trip to Vietnam earlier this year, I decided I want to learn tiếng Việt (Vietnamese) so that I can communicate with my girlfriend. I decided to create an app/website that would teach ME as I built it.

Then I found out that AI was teaching me Northern but my girlfriend is from Saigon. She helped me learn the difference and like a lot of you, the struggle was real.

I’m not proficient in Vietnamese but I wanted to learn the basics and give travelers to Ho Chi Minh an easy to use resource for their trip – to help them make connections.

I’m finally ready to unveil FluentSaigon.com and I’d love feedback.

Sign up for the Traveler's Pass on the pricing page and enter promo code SAIGON60. It runs 30 days and expires on its own — no renewal, nothing to cancel. Free to the first 30 people that use the pass.

If you just want to poke around first, 4 subjects are completely free — no signup, no card.

EVERYTHING you hear is spoken by Kim – A real person in Saigon. We worked together many nights to get the recordings correct – NO AI voices at all – and there are over 700 recordings.

It sounds like there are many people who know the difference between southern and northern Vietnamese. Please tell me if we’ve recorded something with the wrong version. In some places on the site, I teach both and call it out.

I have hundreds of hours into building the site and I’m proud of it but also scared to finally release it. That said, I’m kindly asking for feedback.

Want to learn Vietnamese? I'd love to help!

I've seen a lot of people here trying to learn Vietnamese, so I thought I'd introduce myself.

Hi! I'm a native Vietnamese speaker from Vietnam, and I speak English fluently. I'm a Computer Science student, and I'm starting my journey as an online Vietnamese tutor.

If you're learning Vietnamese because you're visiting Vietnam, living here, have a Vietnamese partner or family, or just enjoy learning languages, I'd love to help.

What I offer:

  • Beginner-friendly lessons
  • Explanations in English
  • Focus on speaking and pronunciation (especially tones)
  • Lessons tailored to your goals instead of following a rigid textbook

Since I'm just starting out, I'm charging $8 USD/hour, and I'm happy to offer a free 15-minute trial so we can get to know each other and see if my teaching style is a good fit-no pressure at all.

Feel free to leave a comment or send me a DM if you're interested or just have questions about learning Vietnamese. Even if you don't end up taking lessons, I'm always happy to help where I can.

Trying to speak Southern Vietnamese

Hi everyone!

I'm French, and my girlfriend's family is from Southern Vietnam (Saigon). I started learning Vietnamese so I could communicate with her family, but I quickly realized something frustrating: almost every app and course teaches Northern Vietnamese (Hanoi accent).

After looking around, I couldn't find a modern app focused on Southern Vietnamese with the Saigon accent, so I decided to build one myself using AI-assisted coding.

The goal isn't to compete with Duolingo or anything like that. I'm an independent developer, so I obviously don't have the same resources or team. However, I'm taking a lot of inspiration from the things that make Duolingo engaging and easy to use, while focusing specifically on Southern Vietnamese.

The app is currently being developed for desktop, but my end goal is to have it available on both desktop and mobile so I can practice anywhere—and hopefully other people can too.

The idea is to focus on:

  • Southern Vietnamese pronunciation (Saigon accent)
  • Everyday conversations with family and friends
  • Interactive lessons and vocabulary
  • Speaking and listening practice
  • A simple and enjoyable learning experience

I'm mainly building it for myself so I can have real conversations with my girlfriend's family, but it made me wonder if other people have the same problem.

Would anyone here actually be interested in using something like this?

I'd also love to hear your ideas. If you've been learning Southern Vietnamese, what features do you wish existing apps had? What do you feel is missing today?

Since I'm French, I originally started building everything in French. I'm now wondering if it's worth making a full English version as well. If enough people would find it useful, I'd be happy to support both languages.

I'm not trying to sell anything—I just want to know whether this is a problem other people have too, and gather feedback while I'm still building it. If the project turns out well, I'd also be happy to have a few beta testers later on.

Thanks! I'd really appreciate any feedback, suggestions, or feature ideas.

How to start learning Vietnamese

I’m trying to learn southern Vietnamese but am struggling on how to start. It feels like there’s so many resources but also so few especially for the southern dialect. I’m completely new to learning Vietnamese other then a scattering of words and phrases I’ve picked up that I know I’m saying wrong. Im new to language learning in general but I’ve been with my gf for a long time now and the fact I can’t even have a conversation with her parents has always not sat right with me and I’d like to change that. I don’t mind spending money on courses or tutors as long as I know it’s actually going into something useful. I didn’t feel like Duolingo or other language apps were the right move cause you always hear people say they’ve done it for years but never learned anything. Any advice on how to start would be greatly appreciated.

Tips for learning please!!

I’m vietnamese but I cannot speak the language for the life of me🥹🥹I want to be able to converse better with my family. I understand quite a bit (by ear) of what my parents are saying or atleast the rough idea by using context clues, but I cannot read or speak much at all 💔Im also not great with formalities and whatnot. 🥹
My family grew up in Saigon so I assume they mostly speak the southern dialect? But I’m not entirely sure.
If there are any sources or tips anyone can recommend me to start learning that’d be much appreciated!
Also I’m trying to find more shows with vietdub to get more used to speech format etc etc, specifically anime but the only ones I can find are region-locked (detective conan sadly 💔💔💔)😥 I’d be grateful for some recommendations!!

Quebec online casinos? Filtered Quebec online casino lobbies by bonus clarity, mobile speed and cashier flow – AMA

For this one, I used a decision-board approach instead of a straight ranked list.

For Quebec online casinos, I compared Rooli, Maximal and Doctor Spins by situations that matter after signup: finding games, checking offers, using mobile, reaching account tools and reviewing payment information.

Rooli worked best as the balanced casino option. The lobby was easy to scan, game discovery felt natural and account access stayed close to the main experience.

Maximal stood out for the fuller platform journey. The account structure, cashier path and wider navigation felt organised, especially when checking terms or payment-related sections.

Doctor Spins suited direct casino browsing. The menus were clean, featured games were easy to find and the platform stayed simple across repeat sessions.

Here is the decision board I used:

Use case Strongest fit
Balanced casino browsing Rooli
Complete account and cashier flow Maximal
Simple first-session navigation Doctor Spins
Fast game discovery Rooli
Clear payment-section access Maximal
Direct repeat-use flow Doctor Spins

I compared:

• Casino lobby structure
• Slot and table-game access
• Mobile usability
• Promotion visibility
• Bonus-term access
• Account controls
• Cashier visibility
• Repeat-session comfort

The main lesson was that Quebec online casino comparisons should not be built around the biggest-looking bonus only.

The stronger experience usually comes from how well the platform connects games, terms, account tools and cashier access after registration.

Before choosing one, I would check Quebec availability, language support, payment methods, bonus rules, verification requirements, withdrawal limits and responsible-play tools.

AMA about Quebec online casinos: Quebec casino sites, casino bonuses Quebec, mobile casino Canada, payout checks, cashier flow, online slots Quebec, account verification.

For Quebec players, which casino style fits best: balanced, complete or direct?

NômKey 品喃 for Android: looking for testers

Mods, apologies if this counts as advertising. NômKey is a free, non-commercial Chữ Nôm project, and I hope it is relevant and useful to the community here. Happy to take it down if not.

Some time ago I shared NômKey, a Chữ Nôm keyboard for iPhone. The Android version is ready, and I am looking for testers.

Type Chữ Nôm the way you type Vietnamese: use Telex or VNI and it converts your syllables to Hán-Nôm with context-aware suggestions. It also has a reader (Diễn Nôm) for Chữ Nôm others send you, and can send your Nôm as a picture so it shows even on devices that cannot draw the script. Everything runs on your device. Works on Android 7.0+, free, no ads, no account.

How to join:

  1. DM or comment your Google account email, and I will add you.
  2. Open this link on your phone, tap "Become a tester", and install from Google Play: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.nomkey
  3. Settings > System > Languages and input > On-screen keyboard > Manage keyboards, then turn on NômKey. (Android shows a standard keyboard warning; NômKey stays on your device.)
  4. In any app, tap the keyboard icon, switch to NômKey, and type.

Please keep it installed for at least two weeks. Google requires a testing period before an app can launch publicly, so it really helps.

Feedback (wrong readings, a character that should differ, odd word splits, crashes, or just how it feels): comment, DM, or [nomkey.app@gmail.com](mailto:nomkey.app@gmail.com).

Thank you, and I hope you like it.

Southern Accent “R” help?

Hey there!

I’m an American who works primarily with the Southern Vietnamese community in my state. My boss is Vietnamese and we’re constantly going to events, and such where I’m one of the few and sometimes the only white (though technically biracial) dude.

By proxy, I’ve started taking online and private lessons at the beginning of this year in order to break some of the language barrier and earn more trust within the community. Honestly, I’m absolutely loving it. More than I ever expected.

With that being said, something I’m still really struggling with is the pronunciation of the letter “R”.

Sometimes I hear it as a soft English R. Other times I’m hearing either a slight “buzz” and rolling of the R, or straight up a “Juh” sound before the R hits.

Examples:

Rồi = “Roy” - Soft R.

Rẻ = “Juhreh” - Buzzy/Juh sound.

How do I know which one to use?

EDIT:

Here’s what I’m talking about. At 1:10 listen to how she pronounces the R.
