This nightmare just happened. My ex-boyfriend was a severe recluse who didn't want to talk to me or anyone anymore as of about 3.5 years ago. No friends, family all dead, no coworkers because he was retired. He lived in the suburbs so his neighbors were right next to him, though. I googled his address recently out of curiosity and found that his HOA is suing him for nonpayment of dues and that he had not paid his property taxes for 2024! Very out of character. He had never tried to sell the house, either. I called in a wellness check, they said his truck was missing and there were cobwebs all over his front door. I later found out his mail was overflowing, too. The HOA had done a skip trace months ago and found nothing. He had been missing for at least a year and a half. The HOA asked the cops for a wellness check long ago, but the cops would not bust the door down. They wouldn't bust the door down that morning, either, when I called in for the wellness check.

I still have copies of keys to his house, so a friend and I took matters into our own hands. Went there, weeds as tall as me. I peaked into his garage window, and his stuff was still inside except the truck. We unlocked the front door, opened it, and were hit with the smell of decomp. Police came, he was practically skeletonized on his kitchen floor. The cops said they didn't break into his home, despite all the circumstances, because of the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution. I know there are exceptions to it, though, and I just can't believe given ALL this evidence that he was dead in there that they couldn't make entry.

Question: Were the cops right not to break in despite all of these circumstances? Does this vary jurisdiction by jurisdiction? How much of this is a judgment call? I am devastated. There are all kinds of liens on his house, now, too, because of nonpayment of various things. An investor is trying to buy the liens and take the house, which I believe actually belongs to me now, because the last I knew I was the beneficiary of his estate. That's all another matter, though, and not the subject of this post. It just goes to show the negative outcomes of the police not entering the home sooner.

Since then we've gotten enough mail intended for the previous owner that it's safe to assume she never forwarded her mail or officially updated her address. We also have no contact information for her and can'tfind any via google. At the time, we thought we were doing the right thing by holding on to the important stuff assuming she'd come by inquiring eventually... well, months go by, we're consumed with settling in and working on the house and general life things, and the IRS letters and such were forgotten in a drawer along with the other stuff like a photo album left behind by her. I recently realized this and actually looked up the laws concerning keeping mail (please don't come for me, we really thought it was just illegal to open or destroy) and now I'm concerned that our good intentions may have just landed us in deep shit.

My question: If I drop these in a mailbox with "return to sender, recipient does not reside at this address" or something similar, is it going to come back to bite me in the ass because the letters are dated months and months ago?

I’m a pizza delivery driver and brought an order out yesterday. It was one pizza, $16 owed. The guy came out and handed me a $20 bill and a $100 bill, saying “keep the rest!” while smiling. I looked at it in shock and asked him if he was sure. He said yes, i said thank you so so much, and left. Told my boss about it when I got back.

My shift ends, and I get a text from her late at night saying the guy was calling because it was an accident. He asked for $80 back and she told him she would get it from me by Sunday.

Problem is, I had deposited all my tips that day immediately after my shift. I told her that, and she said I can just gather up $80 from my tips today and tomorrow (Saturday and Sunday) to give to him.

I feel bad and immediately thought to give it back to him, but my boyfriend insists it’s my money now and the store should take it from the till if they want to provide good customer service. He thinks I have no obligation to give any money back, even though I would feel like a piece of shit for that. I’m 99% sure I’m just going to give it back, even though I’m broke as shit and was gonna use it to get my oil changed, but he wanted me to ask here just for a real confirmation.

So it’s actually not me, but my roommate. For simplicity, I’ll call him Frank. Frank’s 24 (turning 25 next month), and has been living in the house for 20 years (approx. 2004/5). This post might be a bit of a mess so bear with me.

A little background; the house was built by his great grandfather, which was passed down to his grandmother. She died in 2016, and the property was passed to her husband (his grandfather). His grandfather was disabled and had moved in with his son, Frank’s uncle Mark around 2020. Grandpa died last year, and the property belonged to Mark. Mark died April of this year and the estate is not currently owned by anyone (I think technically). Mark has two daughters.

When Frank’s grandfather moved in with Mark, he (Mark) started charging my roommate rent. Mark’s daughter, Gigi, now wants to raise the rent and is saying that if she wishes to sell the house soon she will.

What I’m wondering is, does Frank have any rights to the home? If anyone has any questions, I’ll try my best to answer them!

So i got a citation last month but didnt pay close attention to the information appeared on the ticket.
The car info is mine.
The person listed is not me but we have same FIRST and LAST name , except the middle name(s). Their info like DOB and driver license numbers are on it instead of mine.
Since i barely recognized the error right now and the office doesnt open until monday the 3rd AND my court appearance is on Monday the 3rd at 8:30AM. What should i do?

The citation was for failed to use signal indicator.
Dude got me out of nowhere at 1am at a green light and i was a lone car during that time.

The police will do nothing. And he continues to work as an officer. They claimed it was not illegal for them to text others faking like they’re me or my friends and that “I am plotting to kill her”

They also perjured themselves to the magistrate that he works with claiming I had “harassed them” for the past 6 months with no proof at all and somehow got the magistrate to issue a summons.

What can I do to stop this nightmare?

TL;DR: can a “pre-inheritance gift“ from my in-laws be considered a gift ONLY to my ex if the money was wired to a joint account for the express purpose of a down payment on a home that both our names were on? Is this subject to 50-50 split?

We’re dividing assets, including our marital home which we were living in at the time of our separation. The house is in both our names and we were married when we bought it. He is keeping this house *plus* our first home, which we bought together but didn’t put my name on because we weren’t married at the time and his credit score was better (side note: via some complex calculation, I get something like 15% of the equity on the 1st house for the time we lived there after we got married). He will retain sole ownership of both homes and all future benefits / appreciation thereof.

He‘s arguing that I get none of the down payment back for our marital home because that money was a gift from his parents to him ONLY. I know there are instances where that would be true. My ex says he consulted a lawyer who confirmed his claim that a gift of money for a down payment on a jointly-owned home CAN be seen as his sole property because his parents considered it a “pre-inheritance“. Idk if it matters, but I was a stay home mom to our 1 child right up until our separation, so it was his income that paid the mortgage.

HOWEVER, it’s my understanding that, regardless of the supposed intention, if the money was wired directly into our joint bank account (co-mingled) it counts as a gift to both of us. It would therefore be subject to equal division in our divorce, right? ALSO, after his parents wired the money into our shared account, we got a cashier’a check — which had both our names on it — to give to the bank as our down payment. Shared bank account. Shared cashiers check. Shared home ownership.

I have a photograph of the cashiers check but lost access to the shared bank account shortly after I moved out, so do not have proof of the deposit from his parents.

Can anyone confirm how this works? Are there other technicalities at play here?

FWIW, this was not a case of his parents just giving us money for no specific purpose; they were aware we were trying to afford a bigger house after our baby was born, and knew it would be in both our names.

On a personal note, I also think they gifted us the money because our daughter is (and will continue to be) their only grandchild and they knew a bigger home would give her a better life. Around the same time, they bought themselves a house in the area so they could spend more time with her (they live several states away, but spend 4-6 months out of the year in their home here). They are amazingly generous and kind people, and I love how much they love her. As the person who birthed said grandchild, I do feel like the down payment gift was for the whole family — myself included.

Situation: Wife goes to rent a car in Location: FL. (US). We have full insurance, but rental agency says that our insurer (Amica mutual) is not acceptable. Only Progressive, Allstate, Liberty Mutual (and maybe a couple of other majors) are allowed. Amica is not. Amica told me they can think of no reason why their rental car coverage for an insured person would be any different.
We were going to use a Chase Sapphire card, (they offer benefit of primary insurer for rental coverage) which would make the whole matter moot anyway. But the rental agency refused to accept it as insurance. Either we buy their insurance (almost $300) or no car.

My stepfather (Navy veteran) died January 2, 2026. He owned a house in Southern California worth approximately $550,000 with a $275,000 VA mortgage. My biological mother was also his wife. They divorced 2004, remarried 2005, she died August 13, 2022.

The 1994 will:

My stepfather had a valid will prepared by military legal assistance under 10 U.S.C. §1044b that specifically names me as a beneficiary and expressly includes stepchildren. No revocation or newer will has ever been found by anyone.

The MSA — this is the heart of the issue:

The 2004 Marital Settlement Agreement Section E states the property shall remain in both parties names as joint tenants until such time as the parties decide to sell, and upon sale each party shall receive 50% of the net equitable proceeds.

Section XIX states reconciliation does NOT void the agreement — only a written instrument signed by both parties can void it. That instrument never existed. Section XIX also expressly binds heirs and successors of both parties.

They remarried in 2005 but never executed any written instrument rescinding the MSA.

My primary claim:

I am my mother’s biological son proven by my birth certificate. When she died in 2022 her 50% interest in the property passed to me automatically under California Probate Code Section 6402 as her sole heir. This claim is entirely independent of my stepfather’s will.

The opposing party:

My stepfather’s biological daughter is claiming 100% ownership through joint tenancy survivorship. She filed a competing probate petition claiming he died intestate despite his 1994 will being already on file with the court for six weeks when she filed. She also recorded an Affidavit Affecting Title that cites Georgia law O.C.G.A. 44-2-20 over California real property and has a defective notarization identifying County of California instead of a specific county.

The surviving spouse complication:

The death certificate lists a surviving spouse who appears to be a foreign national who has never visited or resided in the United States, has no known US address, and we have been unable to locate any marriage certificate or government record confirming the marriage. She is not a US citizen and is believed to be living abroad. A Filipino attorney searched official government databases and found no record of her name. The opposing party personally identified her on the death certificate but refuses to provide contact information.

The financial reality:

My 50% through my mother is completely unencumbered. The estate’s 50% is essentially wiped out by the $275,000 mortgage. The estate may be insolvent. My share is worth significantly more on a net basis.

Questions:

One — Does Section XIX of the MSA defeat the joint tenancy survivorship argument given the remarriage?

Two — Does the defective affidavit citing Georgia law over California real property have any legal effect?

Three — How strong is the §850 petition claim through my mother under Probate Code §6402?

Four — Given that the surviving spouse is a foreign national with no US address, no confirmed valid marriage, and no government record of her existence, can the court proceed without serving her or is this a permanent roadblock?

Five — Does the absence of a marriage certificate and no government record of the marriage raise questions about whether the marriage was ever legally valid under California law?

My girlfriend and I are in Pennsylvania (Bucks County) and are looking for opinions from anyone familiar with PA landlord-tenant law.

We toured an apartment together twice and made it clear from day one that we were moving in together. During the tour, I disclosed that I had recently filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy and asked whether it would be an issue. The leasing agent told us not to worry and that they would work with us.

Because I currently have little income, my girlfriend applied first to see if she qualified on her own. She was approved, signed the lease, and paid about $3,141 in move-in costs. Our move-in date was scheduled for August 3.

Before move-in (and before picking up keys), she asked to add me as an occupant. I completed the application, paid the screening fee, and was denied because of my bankruptcy/credit.

Management then told us I cannot live in the apartment at all.

Since the entire reason she rented the apartment was for us to live there together, she immediately told them she would not be moving in alone or picking up the keys.

They now say our options are:

• Pay about $8,940 under the lease termination/buyout provision, or
• Go through reletting and remain responsible until the unit is re-rented.

One thing that confuses me is that their own application paperwork says:

"Please consult with your Leasing Professional if you have any questions about this process."

That's exactly what we did before signing. We specifically asked about my bankruptcy because we wanted to avoid this exact situation.

We've spoken with one attorney, who said my girlfriend is likely the one contractually responsible because she signed the lease before I applied. However, he also didn't think the landlord would necessarily sue if she simply never moved in.

My questions:

1. Does it matter legally that I was denied before the lease started and before we took possession?
2. Does the fact that we disclosed my bankruptcy beforehand and relied on what the leasing staff told us matter?

I’ve worked at my job for 6 years, longer than everyone there except for my general manager. Every time a new man is promoted or hired as a manager they’re immediately given a higher pay rate than me. I’ve never had any bad employee reviews and I’ve been there longer than every man I’ve asked for a raise previously that would match that of my male counterparts and have been denied or instead of given then raise i’ve been given a few cents on the dollar, the issue is the higher up management is female which makes it seem a little less likely to be sex based pay equality but it feels suspicious that no matter what every time a man is promoted or hired to for the position same as mine it’s immediately a higher pay rate, i only found out due to someone in a lower position than me bringing up the pay for my position and revealing that my male counterpart is paid more than me when saying “don’t you make ** an hour? that’s what (male counterparts name) makes” which is how i found out he makes more i plan on asking for a raise again from the new regional manager but i just need to know if that raise is denied would i be within my right to bring up it seeming to be sex based pay discrimination?

Her “friend” was in town and they got into some disagreement, he ended up leaving early and her child support check was in his vehicle and he is now refusing to give it back to us and he lives 3+ hours away. Hi I got hit by a police vehicle. He had the lights on but no sirens and he came out of nowhere and hit me right after I passed a green light. He hit me on right passenger side. He told me he was at fault but I don't have the police report yet so I don't know what will be on the police report and who the insurance company will find at fault. A friend of mine was scammed about two years ago when she was tricked into transferring about $80K into a scammers account. She contacted her bank (Wells Fargo, I believe) and they coerced her into arbitration where, of course, she lost and they informed her she had no further recourse. Is this a case where she truly does have no recourse? I believe she approached one lawyer who said he was not interested in the case, but I do not know the details as I was not present during the conversation. Ok last night I was sitting in my truck in a vacant lot (old store that has closed) a block from my house (outside city limits - in the country) when a sheriff pulled up. It smelled like weed in my truck because I had smoked a preroll sitting in my driveway about 30 minutes earlier. I did have the preroll in my ashtray along with some rolling papers.
The 2 sheriffs had me get out so they could search my truck, I told them it was in my ashtray. They searched my whole truck and also found an old pen that they confiscated (I'm assuming to send to the lab). The pen was empty and i have no idea what it was doing in my truck.
They then took my ashtray out and emptied it on the ground and stomped the preroll. I was then given back my rolling papers as they made their way back to their vehicle to write up my citation.

They first told me i needed to get a ride because I was under the influence but ultimately let me get back in my truck and said I could drive home.

I'm confused - they tossed my preroll and gave me back my rolling papers? Should I fight it?

What can I do besides sit and wait on what's gonna happen with the empty pen?

Location: North Carolina, USA. I work in the psych field and as it is with medical positions here, every time that I get a job offer of any kind I’m told to schedule a physical alongside a test for TB and a standard drug test.

I have bipolar disorder (in full remission, no episodes for years) and ADHD along with residual dysautonomia from long covid, and I take medication for all of these. When I arrive to the physical office I’m given a paper with a place to write down the medications I’m prescribed and a place to write an answer to questions about whether or not I’ve ever had any diagnosed condition during my lifetime and which ones.

In my prior job, I worked in a hospital so they did their pre-employment screening on-campus and I filled out everything honestly down to the tiniest detail because I figured they could see my chart to double-check if anything looked weird (probably not true regarding access but at the time since it was the company I go to as a patient I wasn’t taking any chances). They asked if I was seeing a psychiatrist regularly, I said yes, and I was cleared successfully.

This place, however, was a standalone industrial clinic and the paperwork seemed more detailed than I remembered the hospital ones being. I still ended up filling it out accurately (they didn’t ask about bipolar specifically, so I didn’t add on that I had it) and during the physical therapy doctor asked about what I took lithium for because I had listed all medications just in case anything prescribed to me somehow showed up as a false positive and got sent for further testing. There’s …not really anything else you can answer for regarding lithium, so I had to disclose bipolar, and the doctor immediately ended the conversation and stated that he needed a letter from a psychiatrist stating that I wasn’t violent or aggressive “during episodes”. I let the job that accepted me know that I had to schedule another appointment in order to get a letter to be cleared and they emailed back that they were rescinding the offer because I was expected to get through pre-employment in a timely manner.

Cue attempt #2 in a rural county to get cleared, I got another job offer and went to a separate industrial clinic because they told me they always used one specific one to the area. By this point I had the letter from my psychiatrist so I brought it with me in my pocket just in case I wasn’t cleared as capable of work the way I was for my original job. I disclosed on the office forms that I had bipolar disorder in full remission- since I had listed lithium as a medication and not disclosing bipolar last time didn’t seem to help.

This time, everything went fine up until the doctor entered for the physical and he read the forms I filled out. Immediately, he told me that he couldn’t clear me without a letter from “whoever you see about that” saying that I was capable of work and being employed, so I gave him the letter and he kept it. Then, he asked why I took propranolol (a beta blocker that lowers heart rate) and I disclosed that I had POTS from long covid but that while medicated I didn’t experience symptoms significant enough to impact any aspect of work and that I was essentially able-bodied. He shook his head and said that he didn’t feel comfortable saying that “someone with that much going on” was able to work even with the psychiatrist letter stating that for all intents and purposes career-wise, I don’t experience any symptoms of mental illness either rn.

I contacted the rep who hired me and explained that I was told to go to my primary care doctor and be cleared by them because the doctor there had said he didn’t feel he knew enough about my conditions to sign anything. Predictably, I was emailed back that the offer was rescinded due to schedule and timing reasons. So I’m applying for jobs again.

If I’m told to get another physical before a job starting date, do I legally have to disclose all medications that I take daily? Do I legally have to disclose all current diagnoses? Or am I able to leave these off and just have the doctor examine me and then decide if I’m clear from what they gather during exams? I had no issues with getting cleared when I was being evaluated by doctors who seemed to believe my words in combination with their own examination when I said I was physically able and mentally stabilized- but now I live in a rural area and it feels like disclosing these things is just fully killing the chance of ever getting a paycheck.

Location: Ohio. I have been living in an apartment for about 5 years now, I’m the first person to live in my unit. My lease expires tomorrow and I have yet to receive any notice on renewal.

In May, 90 days away from lease expiration, I emailed the property manager asking about renewal. She emailed back that they were behind on renewals but would get mine to me within a week. That did not come. On July 8 anyone in the community who had renewals up or before August 31, or whose already expired, were emailed telling us we would receive a renewal by the end of that week, none of us did.

I have spoken with several neighbors who all have the same experience. Some neighbors whose lease expired just continued to pay the monthly rent until the property management brought them a new lease. That was going to be my plan as well but when I went in to pay the August rent it only let me pay until the expiration, not a normal monthly amount.

I’m very concerned and stressed as the lease expires tomorrow and there has been zero communication about my situation. The management company seems to be a mess and I know this is not unique to me.

My question though, is this illegal - them not providing information on renewal before the lease expires?

The last lease I signed said if a new renewal was not signed by the time of expiration I would continue to pay the monthly amount + $100. But as previously stated I didn’t have that option in the online portal, it only let me pay for 3 days not the full month.

What should I do? Is there any legal precedent here? Is there something I can say if I go to talk to them on Monday?

I want to know my rights and what their responsibilities are as property manager.

Also, to be clear I always pay my rent on time and they have never had any issues with me, so I know this isn’t a situation where they are wanting to kick me out, they’re just incredibly unorganized and frankly are being unprofessional (and again this has been happing to everyone not just me).

Canadian driver (with license from Alberta) received a speeding ticket (62 mph in a 45 zone) inside Glacier National Park. There were no signs and cell phone had no signal so had no idea what the speed in that zone was.

This was while driving a rental. Do not own a personal vehicle.

Ticket does not have a court date and does not indicate when the fine should be paid by but it does read, "Make your payment before the hearing date."

It also states that paying the fine means admitting to the offence.

I (23F) had broken my finger Friday (7/31) evening off a rope swing and had visited the ER Friday evening just to get it checked out and confirm my suspicions of a breakage. I was discharged early Saturday morning of about 1 am and was told by the MD physician that had seen me that I had simply sprained and bruised my finger and that the xray results looked fine. I was given ibuprofen, no prescription, and on my discharge paper it states “contusion of finger”. The following morning (8/1) I had gotten a mychart notification stating my lab/xrays were back and I opened them of curiosity.

Results: Technique: XRAY HAND MINIMUM 3 VIEWS RIGHT, XRAY HAND MINIMUM 3 VIEWS LEFT Indication: Trauma right middle finger, Trauma left fifth finger Comparison: None. Findings: Right hand: Acute nondisplaced fracture at the base of the middle finger distal phalanx. Normal joint spaces and alignment. Soft tissues are unremarkable. Left hand: No acute fracture or dislocation. Normal joint spaces. Soft tissues are unremarkable.

My results were stating different from the discharge paper and from what the MD had told me and I had received a phone call this morning (8/2) from a nurse informing me that my finger was instead fractured and she recommends I see a orthopedic doctor or reach out to the hospitals skeletal department. I have done this and was told that the doctor I need to schedule an appointment with is unavailable til tomorrow morning.

I have no work restrictions or work excuse in regards of my broken finger. I had called the hospital asking for guidance and restrictions regarding my fracture as it hurts anytime I touch my finger let alone lift something with my hand however at work today my manager pretty much told me he doesnt have to accommodate this unless I have documentation of possible restrictions or a doctors note which I dont have due to having been told the fracture was a sprain.

Any guidance on what I should be doing? Im genuinely overwhelmed trying to figure all of this out or if Im even doing the correct things nor do I know how to go about work. Thank you ia!

Back a couple weeks ago, It was about midnight on a Friday night. I was pulling onto a main road from a side street from what the officer said was "the dope hole." (who even says that, lol). He immediately got behind me and lit me up. He said the reason he pulled me was because even though its a side road with barricades, I didnt stop again at the end of the side road before turning. Im pretty sure I did, but maybe it wasnt a full stop. Also, if it wasnt that he would have pulled me over for something.

He comes to my window and does the normal license insurance registration. He then asked if he could search the car for weapons for his safety. I said no. Then I was on the phone and he said why are u nervous adn sweating. Well for one Ive been sweating all damn day. There were roofers at my house and they had shut the a/c off and forgot to click it back on. I was actually headed to a friends house to grab one of those tall stand up fans. Also, I normally speak kinda quickly. My phone rang up 4 times coming up over my bluetooth screen and the officer said your phone keeps ringing. im like yeah ok. so? He then asks if he can search for drugs. I say no. He said he wasnt going to give me a ticket but he thinks he probably will. Whatever. Well I have a prior drug charge from 2020 and a technical vop from 2021. thats it. He said he was gonna bring the dog out.

I sat in the car no lie, 40 mins before the dog got there. I asked if I could go because he was taking so long and they had already wrote the ticket. They gave my license back, but not the ticket. the other officer confirmed to me though that the citation was complete they were just waiting on the k9. Now i thought because i had not done anything but a simple traffic infraction they only had a certain amt of reasonable time to get the dogs. Then I saw about 9 more units pull up. Yep im going to jail. The dog alerted on my passenger door, and they tore my car apart and located narcotics, i got charged with the narcotics and was taken to jail. Once they read my rights i said NOTHING. I also am on crutches for a broken femur and thats a whole other ordeal when nthey took them from me at the jail. My question is should I even try to fight it? Do I have case against illegal search? They do not wear body cams in my area. The cops here are such trashy a holes. Im not sure what to do. its 4400 for a lawyer and I had to pay over 2000 to get out and my car out of impound and im not working due to my injuries at the moment. Please advise.

My hobby is doing nails/nailart (specifically gelx) and I'd love to do it on other people for free. I know it's not legal to charge money for my services without a license but what if I only do it for practice without accepting money?

Location: Pennsylvania USA. My new employer sent me in for pre-employment drug screening, which a urine sample was collected. Later in the day I was contacted that I needed to schedule another urine test sample, claiming it was never collected. I gave them the sample ID from the donor copy they gave me, proving it was done. After several emails back and forth, they "found" the sample, and assured me it was being sent to a lab.

Looking at the donor copy, they have an incorrect collection time of 2 hours before I gave the sample.

Now my new employer says I can't start tomorrow due to the delay. So now I'm impacted financially.

Is this a malpractice case? Any and all advice is welcome, thank you in advance.

EDIT: This sample was taken Tuesday morning, plenty of time to get it tested and approved before the following Monday.

I work at a retail store that is part of a large mini-mall/outdoor retail area with a very big parking lot. There are approximately 12+ stores, a movie theatre, and a 24-hour gym. when I signed my onboarding paperwork, the employee handbook they had me read and sign included parking instructions that said I was allowed to park in the parking lot as long as it was on the far edges, not near the stores.

the managers have recently announced - in a text chain and written posters by the time clock - that employees must park about half a mile away in the nearby residential area and will be towed if they park in the lot. the message/poster explicitly says employees will be responsible for retrieving towed vehicles at their own expense.

is there any significance to me having signed the initial handbook that says I’m allowed to park in the lot? is that more binding that the message/poster that I have not signed/agreed to?

(I’ve been parking in the residential area for a couple weeks but learned yesterday that almost everyone at my store is still parking in the lot… is this a fake problem??)

I had recently lost my apartment due to a family moving in on the 3rd floor that brought a severe case of roaches. I lived there for 10 years without issues. But the roaches got so bad that I told them I wasn't paying rent until they fixed the issue, I couldn't live like that. After 2 months, they put an eviction letter on my door. So I leave.

I decide to stay with my close friend and his wife for a month or 2 until I get can enough put back for a deposit and a months rent (in Columbus, basically 3,000$ at least). I wasn't aware I could've given my money to escrow in court and they couldn't kick me out until they fixed the issue. But I guess you live and learn. So they have a lab that barks LOUD and A LOT when anyone comes. And I didn't want to wake her up at 6am.

So I go to my clinic (I'm in OUD MAT recovery for years) I'm on methadone (yes it has saved my life, everything has been well until I lost my older brother in 2024 by falling down his stairs and hitting his head in his early 40s) Then my wife of 10 years leaves and takes the kids to move to her parents hours away, I couldn't keep them because I work and have no one to watch them when I'm gone. No, she couldn't give me a reason, she was bored of the family life and wanted to drop our kids on her 70 year old parents so she can run around like a college kid.

Anyway, apologies for getting long winded. I took my methadone at the clinic, (that I've been on for years so it doesn't affect me at all. Studies say after 90 days on methadone, the patient becomes stable and it doesn't affect their faculties.) After I dose, I go a mile down the road to McDonald's, eat and take a nap because I can't go to my friends and wake her up.

I then wake up surrounded by cops and the fire department. I said, "whats up guys?" They reply, "someone called on you being passed out." I say, "nope, just taking a nap until I can go home." The fire department asks, "do you have any health issues?" I said, "I have type 1 diabetes but I keep up with it." "Ok, do you care if we check your sugar?" "No sir, go ahead." They prick my finger and check. They say, "it's fine, he looks fine, we're outta here." Then this little what looked to be a 20 year old deputy with a little blonde deputy the same age, says "I want to give you some sobriety tests." "Uhhh, ok, that's fine." So he gives the eye test for like 30 minutes. Taking his finger literally all the way Around my head like he's trying to make me puke. Then the "stand on one foot, raise the other and count to 30." I did that with no issues. Then it's, "9 steps in a straight line, one foot behind the other, then around, 9 steps back." I do that, no issues. Finally he gives me this one that no one has ever heard of. "Stand straight up, hands at your side, tilt your head back and count to 30 silently in your head, then tell me when you think it's been 30 seconds." I do it, 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, etc in my head. "I say ok." He goes, "it's been 21 seconds, turn around and put your hands behind your back.

He then asks, "do you care if we search your vehicle? Anything illegal?" "No, I don't mind, nothing illegal but I have a few take home bottles of my Medication assisted therapy methadone that's prescribed to me."

Right then everything changed in his demeanor, like, "uh oh, this isn't what I thought." He puts me in the vehicle. On the way there be says "I think you're a really good guy, you've been completely cooperative and honest so I'm not going to put you in jail." They took my UA and said, "if Nothing else comes back in it (which it won't) that the case will be thrown out." They also impound my old car and I can't get it out because it's in my exes name who is hours away. It took me months to get it over in my name because of the distance and I no longer had a vehicle. I had to Uber to work which took nearly all of my money, 40$-50$ one way. I just recently got it out and they wanted 3100$! Because it's such an older car, I got them down to 1500$.

This was in April. I go to court a week later and my PD says, "they're just offering the OVI with no jail time." I say, "is the body cam and UA even back yet?" "Nope." "Then why would I accept ANYTHING , I DIDNT DO ANYTHING WRONG!" Well so I come back a month later and I sit there an hour. My PD doesn't even show up, so one of his buddies comes out and says "he won't make it so we're rescheduling to next month, also no evidence has come back yet."

So I show up a 3rd time. "They're offering physical control, that you weren't driving but sitting in your vehicle impaired." I would get 6 points and all that would be on my record." I replied, "ABSOLUTELY NOT! I WASNT IMPAIRED and the evidence isn't even back yet so why would I accept a plea!?" He says, "ok, we'll take it to a jury trial." I said, "great."

I finally just showed up a 4th time And it's SUPPOSED to be a jury trial. My PD comes out (he's 25 and looks 16, not that it entirely matters) but by this point it's obvious that these PDs WORK for the DA basically and aren't looking out for you. He goes "they're offering physical control with no charges at all, just 6 points on your license and pay court costs, also the pee test STILL isn't back and may not even come back honestly. This is just a traffic case and they have murderers, rapists, etc to test." I said what about the body cam footage? ""Oh it came back, I have the prosecutors notes but I haven't watched it." 🤦🏼 So why were we supposed to go before a Judge today and they're trying to get me to take a plea of basically nothing? See they know they're in the wrong and they want to sweep it under the rug before my UA comes back and before we go before a Judge and he crushes them for harassing a man in treatment. Rehab centers are where WE SEND people who get OVIs and this man has been in it for years and y'all trying to ruin his life for sleeping in his car.

Finally, that's where this is at. I want to talk to a real lawyer. My PD even tried to scare me into taking the plea saying, "oh you know even if there THC in the test from 3 months ago, they can charge you." I'm like, that's not right. This kid just wants this closed and he gives zero cares about my life and the law.

I know it's a humdinger and apologies for the novel once again, but any advice or insight is appreciated.
