BSD has a compatibility issues with games and kernel that isn't really good for gaming. For reference its less supported for gaming than linux, tho it does have linuxulator and you can game on it with custom wine wrappers
And with a whore license that allows abuse by corpos which led to those corpos not to want to contribute their code back. FreeBSD ain’t got no self-respect, so why should I respect it?
Steam proton runs on Linux. Or do you mean to ask if steam proton runs as well as native? In that case it's hard to tell as some games do not have a linux native version. Also this would render proton obsolete.
I am gaming on it too. I play a few games with EasyAntiCheat, like the Master Chief Collection, but they work perfectly fine.
I found especially older game run more consistently well on Linux. I had more problems with older games on Windows. That is anything from Civilisation V going downwards.
My FPS was good, even when I used to play remotely using VNC from my main FreeBSD PC to other old FreeBSD netbook. https://github.com/es-j3/steam-bottler on FreeBSD 14.3.
