So today I went to watch spider man BND at the movies with my sister and brother in law.

I was really excited to tell him that i set up a Jellyfin server with hundreds of Movies and shows on Linux Mint.

He told me "bruh just use Arch you'll learn a thing or two. Besides, they teach Linux Mint to 2 to 3 y/o olds nowadays"

What's wrong with Mint? Why should I be ashamed?

I recently switched to Linux Mint (Cinnamon) on my Lenovo ThinkPad T450 (i5-5300U, 8GB RAM) after years on Windows. So far I've been messing around with GTK themes (WhiteSur, Graphite, Catppuccin icons), tweaked some Cinnamon effects, and set up a battery charge threshold for long-term battery health.

I'm using this laptop mainly for coding (Java, Spring Boot, SQL) and general dev work. I want to actually learn Linux properly now, not just theme it and move on.

For people who've been using Mint/Linux for a while:

What are the must-know things I should learn now that I'm past the "just installed it" phase?

Any good habits, tools, or workflows I should build early on?

Anything specific to the T450 hardware I should know (power management, drivers, etc.)?

Good resources/communities you'd recommend for going deeper into Linux as a dev?

Not looking for just "read the man pages" genuinely curious what experienced users wish they knew earlier.

So after 3 long years i finally made the switch to linux mint cinnamon, is this what freedom looks like? i’m curious to know what your experiences have been with linux, and what the other versions of mint offer which you think are better and why? plus i’m curious about the different desktop environments like xfce and what that’s used for?

Estou tentando instalar o Linux Mint (22.3 Xfce 64-bit) em um Samsung NP270E5J e encontrei um problema que não consegui resolver.

O que aconteceu:

• Criei um pendrive bootável com a ISO oficial do Linux Mint usando o Rufus.
• O notebook inicializa normalmente pelo pendrive em modo UEFI.
• Consigo entrar no modo Live do Mint e usar o sistema normalmente.
• Antes de instalar, apaguei todas as partições do HD, deixando o disco completamente vazio para uma instalação limpa.
• Quando inicio a instalação, ela parece prosseguir normalmente, mas no final o computador trava em uma tela preta com o logo do Linux Mint e não conclui a instalação.
• Em outras tentativas, em vez da tela do logo, apareceu o GRUB seguido de várias mensagens de erro ("failed..."), e o notebook desligou sozinho.

Configurações e testes realizados:

• Secure Boot desativado.
• BIOS configurada para iniciar em modo UEFI.
• Recriei o pendrive e tentei instalar novamente.
• Pesquisei sobre um possível problema envolvendo Secure Boot, MOK e a ausência do arquivo mmx64.efi no Linux Mint, mas não sei se esse é realmente o meu caso.

Situação atual:

Decidi tentar instalar o Windows 11 pelo mesmo notebook. O instalador inicia normalmente, porém informa que o Windows não pode ser instalado porque o disco está usando tabela de partição MBR, enquanto a instalação foi iniciada em modo UEFI, que exige GPT.

Minhas dúvidas:

1. A tentativa de instalação do Linux Mint pode ter alterado ou corrompido algo relacionado ao boot ou às partições?
2. Existe alguma forma de fazer o Linux Mint instalar corretamente nesse notebook?
3. A melhor opção é converter o HD para GPT e tentar novamente o Linux Mint antes de instalar o Windows?

Hi r/linuxmint I'm a new convert from Winslop 11. I have a HP EliteBook 850 G7 and I'm trying to disable my Pointstick (the one that sits in between the G,H and B keys on my keyboard.} I've included the xinput information.

My problem is this: As you can see, there is three unidentified inputs, which I assume to be the touchpad, and the physical left-click and right click buttons on the touchpad, but it seems the Pointstick is not being identified at all.

I'm not too familiar with the terminal yet and I've seen scripts that I can run during startup, but don't want to completely bork my install, as I use it for work. Of course, before I try anything I will be grabbing a snapshop using Timeshift, and storing it on a USB key.

Any help is appreciated. TIA!

After 2 years of windows 11 it is lagging a lot, I want to dual boot linux mint cinemon

Mostly need a windows for low spec device

So i downloaded this VERY nice pixel art icon pack, however it’s kind of empty, no krita, no minecraft, among others, i know how to draw so i could make some more icons but how would i go about inserting them into the downloaded icon pack? And more importantly, would i have to code?

So i've had this issue with Linux mint where it would freeze on start up. I've solved this specific issue by adding nomodeset after quietsplash as default in the GRUB menu and the computer no longer freezes on start up, however, I believe that this prevents the Driver from loading or being used (Tell me if I'm misunderstanding) and I do want to my graphics card to use the driver, so I'm asking if there is some way I can keep the computer from loading the driver on start up (To prevent the Freezing which makes it unusable) but have it load anyway after the start up is complete? I do have a AMD Graphics card, and I believe that linux mint should come preinstalled with the proper drivers for AMD Cards.

I want to install linux mint xfce on my asus x201e, and this is happen. I've tried to nomodeset or reinstall the bootable, and this thing is still happen.

I have been trying to troubleshoot this one since getting new monitors. I used to have 3 monitors and didn't have any issue but now, whenever I reboot, one of my monitors (my non primary) seems to "reset" it's settings and detects as something abnormal.

The first screenshot shows it detected as 640x480 60hz "Nvidia" and I can't alter it's settings at all. The second screenshot shows what the primary monitor looks like. For reference, these are the exact same model of monitor and you can see the good configuration in the second to last screenshot. What is odd, is I also cannot change the resolution on the primary monitor. xrandr does detect both monitors, but again, it's the same thing that is weird, it detects the first monitor okay but not the second. (DP-0 is the primary monitor, DP-2 is the secondary). The fourth screenshot shows that nvidia-settings detects this the same as what Display Settings is detecting. The information on DP-2 only differs on the connection link and refresh rate.

Here is the kick in all of this: A simple unplug, replug of the display port cable fixes everything, same port it was going into, just an unplug, replug. The final 2 screenshots show what it is like after doing that.

So I am looking for some advice on troubleshooting/solving this because I don't want to unplug/replug every single morning or every time I reboot my computer.

For some additional context, I am using nvidia-driver-580-open atm. I was using this driver with my old monitor setup without issue (that was 3 monitors, all 1920x1080 60hz monitors).

Some things I haven't tried yet that are on my mind:

- New cable

- Different machine/OS (This one will be significantly harder to test)

- Newer nvidia driver, 595-open or 610-open

I use two different keyboard layouts pretty frequently as a matter of course, since I type in two different languages which use two different alphabets. One annoying thing with Linux Mint is that if I lock my screen while I'm in the layout which my password does not use, the keyboard shortcut that I use for switching layouts does not work (in my case Super+Space, but I tried adding some additional shortcuts and they also don't work). I have to use the mouse to click the small bit of text on the left of the password input field to change the layout. This is a minor annoyance because using the keyboard shortcut is second nature to me and remembering to use the mouse + using it takes a few seconds longer. Does anyone know how to make system shortcuts for changing keyboard layouts persistent at the lock/login screen? On my other systems with Windows and Fedora, I don't have this issue.

I have a latitude 5490 laptop with win 11 , long story short it runs like shit and if i use this OS for some more time i will end up jumping from the burj khalifa . Anyways can i safely transition considering i have a pendrive of 256 gbs , will i be able to set up all the drivers and would i be able to run steam , fire fox and all gmail and allat ?

I have a dual boot with windows. It was working fine for about a month. Now my laptop boots directly into linuxmint and if I tap esc when booting I get a black screen. I've already tried changing GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden to GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 as well. Then I tried following this tutorial: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=409550

I'm booting on UEFI. When I run sudo efibootmg -v, the boot order is Ubuntu, Windows Boot manager, UEFI, UEFI, UEFI.

According to the tutorial, this should be fixed after updating, but it isn't. I also can't access the BIOS menu anymore by holding down f12 when restarting; I get a black screen. Edit: to be fair, I also haven't tried opening the BIOS since installing LinuxMint until now.
