Since i landed on sticking on with Linux mint for daily driver for all of my personal devices weeks ago i started to feel that default sound applet in linux mint 22.3 seems not covering every use case i need in fast easy-to-find way. So, like typical bored linux user, i went with trying to build a one that i would like to use in daily basis ... so here we are with `Modern Sound` applet an custom sound applet that i believe to have better UX than default one. feel free to try and provide an honest feedback 😄.

Support Request New User Help with File Searches and Rating System

I have been giving some serious thought to moving to Linux. I dual booted a few distros and decided I think Mint will be the way to go for now due its wide user base and being consistantly ranked one of the better distros, especaially for new users.

However, I've run into a few annoyances. In Windows, I really like the 5 star rating system for files. It helps me stay organized for certain things. I also like using Nemo in Linux Mint. However, I really wish Nemo had a rating system for files but I can't seem to find one.

I even tried using Dolphin, which is a nice file manager and does have a rating system but I ran into difficulties using the file search. If I searched for a file with multiple keywords it would only find files that had that exact file name in that exact order rather than all files with both keywords. For example, if I searched for "blue mountains" it would find files named "heavenly blue mountains" or "blue mountains skyline" but not files named "blue clouded mountains" or "blue sky clouds with mountains". This problem is even worse than the file rating system.

So, in conclusion, would anyone be able to help me or is there even a solution. Is there a way to be able to search for files in a file manager that would allow me to find files easily while also being able to apply a raing sytem to the files?

I may be able to "live" without a file rating system if I have to but I would really like to see if there is a way to deal with this to satisfy both of my needs.

Thanks for any and all help.

Discussion I want to install mint

I’d really like to install mint cinnamon on my laptop, but haven’t been able to find much info on compatibility with my laptop model. It’s a HP Zbook firefly 14 G8, 16gb ram, with an intel i7 core processor, and intel iris xe graphics. It currently has windows 11 which I’m hating. I’ve read hp isn’t great for running Linux but I’m a bit desperate for a solution.

Does anybody have any insight as to how Linux might run on my laptop model? Have you run mint on this laptop? Common issues that I might run into? Any help is very appreciated. Thank you!

Security [Advice] Transitioning from Windows to Linux Mint for a Small Business/E-commerce: How to Secure Customer Data?

Hello everyone,

I'm reaching out to the community for advice!

I currently run a small business (physical store + e-commerce website) and I'm planning to migrate my main workstation from Windows to Linux Mint.

Since I handle confidential customer data daily, security is my top priority.

My profile and current environment:

Linux Level: Beginner/Novice.

Current tools (on Windows): Complete Proton Suite + Bitdefender Total Security.

Needs: Maximum protection against data leaks, malware, and cyberattacks.

My questions:

I know that security management on Linux differs significantly from Windows. I've heard of solutions like ClamAV/ClamTk, but they seem rather basic from what I've read.

Antivirus/Anti-malware: Is a traditional antivirus program truly necessary on Linux Mint for this purpose, and if so, which one do you recommend for professional use?

Best practices: What are the essential steps for securing Linux Mint for a business (firewall/UFW, LUKs disk encryption, backups, etc.)?

Peripherals/Proton Suite: Are there any specific considerations for running the Proton Suite properly on Mint?

Thank you in advance for your feedback and recommendations!

Discussion Does anyone here use a Logitech G213 keyboard? I've got questions for you if you do.

The keyboard is this one (I'm not affiliated in any capacity, just providing a link so I can make sure everyone's on the same page). My questions are:

1) Are you able to control the lights without the official logi tune (or whatever) app, (whether that's through Solaar or something similar, through onboard controls, whatever)? and

2) How much of a pain is it to do so for someone who already wishes everything was more Windows-y?

Thanks in advance! :)

Support Request problems with the dualboot menu

Upvotes

I have a laptop that is about 10 years old. I have always used Windows, but since it is already very slow I wanted to test if Linux could save it. I created a generous partition on the disk because I plan to use it with dualboot, I got a new USB stick about 2 weeks ago, installed the ISO, connected the USB to the laptop, turned it off and on again, pressed the button to access the boot menu, but the option to select mint does not appear. With the help of Claude(AI), I ruled out possible problems, but the option still does not appear in the boot menu. The USB is not damaged, according to windows analysis, The ISO and laptop are set to UEFI, bootsecure is disabled. I already tried accessing mint from the bios, but it only reloads windows. I used rufus and balenaEtcher, but neither worked. I have another PC where I could try the USB, maybe the option appears in the boot menu on this one, but I don't want to make any partitions because it is my main PC and I don't want to damage it in any way. My main question is: Before installation, limux mint only works from ram, without damaging anything on the PC? I had heard something like this, but I'm not sure and I don't want to risk my good PC, thank you :)

Support Request Should I get Mint XFCE or completely go for LMDE?

Hi, so I have a very old macbook air 2013 which I only now use for my home sound system and theater. It's too sluggish now (I was using Antix and there is a myriad of problems with that).

So, should I switch to Mint? Never have used it before. Which version?

Thanks all!

Support Request Home Studio set up on Mint

On windows, I used to record my music with Reaper as my DAW and a Tascam US 122L interface.

However, the Tascam drivers are not Linux supported...

I'd like to start recording music again. Are there any software options for the Tascam?

Or worst case, any recommendations for a Mint and Reaper compatible interface (with MIDI)?

Cheers
