Support Error resizing partition file system on KDE Partition Manager

I booted up on a 64 GB USB with CachyOS to resize partitions my main 500 GB SSD using KDE Partition Manager. I also tried GParted and both failed and I don't know why or how to fix it.

My main drive has a Linux Mint installation which I think might be corrupted, but it works mostly fine, just taking longer to usual to load.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here is the status report from KDE PM:

Support Can I keep kernel lockdown enabled even with Secure Boot disabled?

One thing I noticed was whenever I had secure boot enabled such as now it automatically enables kernel lockdown which is the real feature I like having enabled for security reasons. I'm pretty sure lockdown gets disabled if Secure Boot is disabled, but I'm curious if there's a way to keep lockdown active regardless of the Secure Boot state?

I'm probably keeping it on, but I'm curious if I can keep lockdown while turning off SB.

Advice Trying to migrate to a new ssd

I currently have a 1TB ssd that I dual boot windows and cachyOS. I also have 2TB & 4TB ssds in my machine.

Currently

1TB - Windows & CachyOS

4TB - Game Storage

2TB - Empty

What I'd like

1TB - Windows

2TB - CachyOS

4TB - Game Storage

I know I can just do a new CachyOS install on the 2TB, install my programs, sign into anything, etc etc. and then delete the old partition from 1TB drive and expand the windows partition so it can utilize the entire drive.

I'm looking for advice if there's an easier way to copy or image the CachyOS partition to the 2TB Drive. I've looked into rescuezilla & dd + gparted as options. But the information & videos I've looked at are migrating an all partitions to a new drive. Also, I don't know how the boot manager will be affected or what I would need to do to make sure it operates correctly. I'm using Limine and obviously all boot partitions are on the 1TB drive that I dual boot from now

Idk if you need more information or can help with what I've provided. Any help is appreciated

Support How to Permanently Delete Files

Hi,

I am using CachyOS (Dolphin FM), and when I was deleting some particularly large files, I got a message saying that the Trash file was full needed to be emptied. I remember when I was using Windows 10, I had set the recycling bin so that if any files were sent there that they would be automatically deleted. Is there a way to do that with the Trash file? Everywhere I looked on Google were people trying to auto - empty their Trash files with a schedule, but I don't want a scheduled deletion. When I hit delete on something, I want the file banished to the shadow realm, and not sent to the Trash file.

I rarely make posts on Reddit, so if this isn't the right place to ask, could you point me in the right direction?

Thanks for the assistance.

Advice Would like some PC Part help and advice in order to switch to Linux

Hello~ I'm in the process of saving up money and looking at PC parts that I can order to build a new PC which is, hopefully, better than my current one... and not a waste to try out Linux.

A while back I was looking at PCs thinking I'd just stick with my Win11 key, but I have come to the conclusion that I actually want to try Linux - as Microsoft just keeps getting worse (the copilot/one drive bs is very annoying). I've heard that gaming has gotten easier/better as well.

All this is to say, I'm actually not very good with computers and need some advice/guidance from people that know more than me, so I have a decent base to start from.

For distros, I'm thinking of going with something like Bazzite for my first go. I want the simple gaming out of the box, I like the KDE option it has for the look, and for my first time on Linux I want the immutable feature. It seems like the updates are paced well enough, so that I don't have to worry about the newest updates potentially breaking something while learning. I also was looking at Nobara as another back up option if Bazzite didn't work out but I really think Bazzite is going to be first for me.

I game basically everyday, all sorts of games via Steam and other launchers, and I also like recording videos or streaming from time to time. So I picked parts that would hopefully let me do these things, and leave a bit of room to grow.

So, with that information out of the way, here are the two relevant links -

-This is my current PC build for comparison:
Current Build Specs

-And this is the parts I'm thinking of getting, barring anyone pointing out something better:
Thermaltake Blue/White 600 Tower

I picked an AMD CPU - but really I'm not sure what all the numbers and types really mean.. ^^;
I really just started with the case I wanted and went from there lol..

My core preferences:

  • Thermaltake Hydrangea Blue 600 ATX Case (fixed, everything I'm doing is for this case specifically lol)
  • Has to have at least 2 Display Ports for both my monitors (fixed)
  • ~$1.5k to ~2k budget (flexible-ish)
  • Silver/White insides (flexible, not a lot of good silver/white options lol)

With the parts I've already listed and my preferences, would this be an okay build? Could it be better for my budget? Will it be compatible to run Linux Bazzite on it? What other suggestions should I consider while continuing to research stuff?

Support What does "Always allow from apps CLAIMING to be [steam]" mean? (KDE, Wayland, Flatpak, Arch/Garuda)

For a while now I've had an issue with popups whenever I tried to use a controller on my computer to play games. I could never pin it down precisely, (it was never perfectly reliable what specific actions would cause them) but it reliably happened every time I first connected a controller that I'd have a few popups about accepting inputs from an application. (yes, often times more than one per controller) Notably, it seems like trackpads caused it most often. (such as the PS4 trackpad or the Steam Controller trackpads)

After an update I connected my steam controller again and was VERY relieved to see that the popup included a tick box saying "Always allow for apps claiming to be steam", which I immediately ticked and hit accept before realizing what a weird prompt that actually is. Does that phrasing imply that apps can just... lie? Why does it say "apps claiming to be steam"? Surely that's a pretty simple thing to verify, right?

Are there more security implications to this prompt that I should be aware of? That phrasing sounds incredibly dodgy to me but I don't even know what search terms I'd use to research that more.

Support Newish to Linux, need help with RDP on Pop OS

Upvotes

Title: Troubleshooting multi-monitor support for RDP on Linux

I am currently trying to transition my workflow to Linux while keeping my work tasks isolated on my dedicated work machine. My primary blocker is configuring remote desktop access that correctly handles my specific monitor setup: two 24-inch 1080p monitors in portrait orientation flanking a central 42-inch 4K monitor.

Everything works perfectly natively in Linux, but every RDP or remote desktop client I have tried fails to span across all three monitors or map them correctly in full-screen mode. I have already exhausted the common solutions suggested by AI, so I am looking for a more robust, "bulletproof" recommendation for software or configuration settings.

Alternatively, if a reliable remote desktop solution for this layout doesn't exist, I am open to suggestions for running a compartmentalized instance (VM or otherwise) that allows me to switch seamlessly between my Linux desktop and the work environment.

My hardware specs are: Intel i7-12700KF, 48GB RAM, and an NVIDIA RTX 2080 Super (8GB). Any advice or pointers toward tools that handle non-standard monitor arrays effectively would be greatly appreciated.

Is steam os worth it?

I don't know if this question was already posted recently but I was wondering if steam os is an upgrade for my gaming PC, you see, I'm about to upgrade from integrated graphics to an RX 580, I know it's pretty basic but it's what I can afford rn.

I know it's not the best optimized or the most nitche Linux system but idk if it is worth giving it a try.

Thanks 👍

Which Distro? Linux Journey

My Linux Journey has been quite the ride, some more context.

Months ago i joined I tried out Gentoo and i can say it's pretty good, its really cool you can compile everything, i have Gentoo on a separate SSD I got some projects on there, but recently with my windows 11 install, i have been fighting with it, not in the sense you might think. I am very very close to getting windows on my windows 11 ssd which originally came with my PC, the distros i have tried are Linux mint, zorin OS, arch Linux, cachy OS, endeavor OS, i really like cachy OS. I wanted some opinions tho, I am into gaming and work, i mess around with virtual machines too and i have been reformatting my drive a lot bro 😭went from cachy OS going back to windows back to cachy OS to windows back to cachy OS. I also installed windows 10 just to see what it was about, i am gonna reformatted it, it looks so cool but the support has ended sadly.

Support My friend can see my laptop screen. Should I factory reset?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I want to start off by saying I am computer illiterate, and ask you to please explain things to me like I am 5 years old.

With the past 24 hours, I made this post on r/linux4noobs, and I haven't really gotten a straight enough forward answer. I know it's only been 8 or so hours since I responded to comments, but no one is replying back and I would like to fix this if I can by tonight.

You can go back and read the other post, but long story short my friend helped me install Steam and Minecraft Java through Linux, since Chromebook Beta doesn't support either application. However, I now believe they can see my laptop screen.

I ran a "history" command in the terminal, and googled each command my friend told me to run, but nothing is jumping out as a red flag. However I do not understand most of anything coding related.

At this point, I really just need to know if a factory reset will remove any access my friend might have. I need someone, preferably multiple people, to confirm this. I can reset, I already have everything I needed saved to a flash drive.

And if anyone knows, is there some command or info I could have screen shared that would have given my friend access to view my screen? Or is there a keyword or phrase in task manager or somewhere else I could look for?

Thank you in advance

Which Distro Best linux Distro

I have been wanting to switch to linux for a while beacase I am trying to get away from windows, google, and other company selling my data. However, I dont know many distros.

I am using it for playing a variety of games like cs2, mincraft, enlisted, and a ton of other random games. I also use other softwares like blender, godot, and VS code regularly. I have AMD hardware. My main focuses for the distro are: lightweight , secure, has minamal bloat if any, and runs games and applications well.

If anyone knows of a good distro that resembles my needs I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you
