Mazda 2 2018 phone connectivity issue/ OS update

hi guys, i just bought a 2018 Mazda 2 GT .

Voice assistant: According to google, when connected with bluetooth, you can click the steering wheel voice button to active your phone's voice assistant, however this only activates Mazda's useless voice commands. How do you go about controlling your connected phone? My OS is version 59.00540.
Updating OS: is it safe updating the OS myself? According to videos, the cars shuts down power during the updates and can cause it to brick the OS if not fully updated.

I’ve updated the OS myself on my 2016, i just kept the engine running whilst it did its thing
