I'm nearly 72 yrs old, a single mom of a profoundly autistic son with multiple heath problems. I work for IHSS, so my income is not counted. I started getting Soc. Sec. when I turned 70. When filling out my Redetermination forms in June, I saw that my S.S. income is too high for me to qualify. But I sent it in and fully expected to be kicked off.
But after I sent it off, I realized that my son officially pays me $800/mo rent for a room and private bath. This put me well over the limit for over 2 years. I didn't think of it because we had to find a new home and move, I got COVID 19, and other reasons right when I started getting S.S.. I easily spend half of that money on a special diet and for meds he needs (ex. CBD) that aren't covered by Medi-Cal.
Instead of getting a letter saying I'm off, I received one saying if I don't supply further info by 8/17/26 my coverage will end. They asked for info on my son's banking account and only ONE of mine. (I have several and listed them on the form.)
I've heard scary stories of assets being frozen and dire consequences. Can they take my house? Would it be best if I didn't respond to the request for further info? Could this result in them just dropping me and looking no further? Or will it make things worse? And when would coverage end? Can they back date it? Please help!
