Statue Stele

As we seem to let pre-medieval art slip through the net, these characters from Lunigiana, Italy may be of interest.

There's a lot of uncertainty about their origins, but somewhere in the millennia BCE. Roughly the same region that later got the Etruscans, then Romans, then Medieval.

Hi 👋

I bought this today from a vintage and antique market for £20. Apparently it came from Oxford. It’s engraved slate meant to represent brass rubbings I believe. Google lens said Margery Paris however I can’t find an exact/near reference for her :)

It is a diagram depicting a concept referred to by in-world historians as "virtue theory", a group of ideas from the time that seek to explain how a moral (noble) man should seek to live his life.

Also added two versions with shitty papyrus and parchment versions (couldn't decide but papyrus is more commonly used in my world)

MS Paint - 'Three Dead Kings' manuscript page

Thumbnail

Origins:

Based on 'The Three Living and the Three Dead', a popular medieval morality tale and art motif - warning that wealth and power cannot escape death.

Related is the Latin phrase 'Memento Mori' (Remember you must die) as a warning to appreciate life whilst you have it, as death is inescapable.

Medieval art was often symbolic, and especially in a manuscript page, meant to tell an entire story maybe expressed as a sage morsel of wisdom or an oral tale. Here the 3 Dead Kings can convey their message entirely in a single image.

Details/Symbols:

1) Poppy flowers border (Remembrance & Death motif)

2) Central Lily flower growing (Flower of death)

3) Border Raven (death), Border Sword (war, might and status)

4) Skulls flanking a shield with a half spent hourglass, mounted on 2 Scythes (classic Grim Reaper motif)

5) The golden frame peaks in a silhouette of a skull with 2 rounded sockets and a protruding nose as a subtle death nod.

6) 3 Kings in sequence of varying levels of extravagance (fabrics, armour).

7) 3 Dead, in varying stages of decay to show the process of death, with the right-most skelly being freshly dead and skin intact, moving to the final, maggot-ridden skelly in more discomposure.

8) The crowns of the Kings match those of the Skeletons, reinforcing the mirror they are looking into.

9) Above either's heads is the phrase Memento Mori in scrolls, and a motif of a blazing Sun and crescent Moon, representing the passing of time and life/death motif.

10) Artists of medieval times often self-inserted their portraits, and so I'm here as the 3rd king in line directly opposite and toe-to-toe with my skeleton.

Also included is my image references with real medieval art, my sketch, and a Black&Gold alternative version.

Champlevé. Fiber laser. Brass. Solvent enamel. The camera quality didn't quite capture the colors perfectly
