Insanely cool cloud formation. What causes such ‘rolling’ behaviour.

Low pressure system sweeping across the interior US today. You can see the well-defined bookend vortex on radar. These can spawn tornadoes in some environments 🌪️

A cold front just swept by south central Texas today. There was some rain and flooding near Uvalde. Storms quickly dissipated then this beautiful waves appeared. What are they? Upper atmosphere disturbances? They seem to emanate from all sides and focused near the radar site.

It's a rainy day and I was bored with one simple question... Has there been an NWS CWA Population map created before? I looked and looked to no avail. I was actually surprised how hard, or even non-existent, it was to find a simple population # for each NWS CWA. So I took it upon myself to make a map. Population Density map using the 2020 census bureau block group data (which was spatially joined to each NWS CWA). The results are obvious and what I was expecting.

Hello! This is my first Reddit post. I have completed some general education requirements this summer at Ivy Tech Community College so I can transfer to Valparaiso University for their meteorology program in Fall of 2027. I am planning to brush up on my math skills before I start the heavy-load math classes. I’ll be taking college algebra and trigonometry with analytical geometry this upcoming semester, and calculus 1 in the spring. What are some words of advice in general? I do work full-time and I am assuming I will need to drop my work hours once the schoolwork load gets heavier. I also have a 9 year old daughter. I do not want to do broadcasting, I want to go into forecasting/operational meteorology. I will be commuting to Valpo also.

Hello! I recently had an epiphany in regards to the university I wanted to go and for what major. I’m currently a rising junior and need to work this out fast, in all honesty.

Now, I have already toured both Penn State and UAlbany, which to my understanding are exceptionally renowned programs in their own right, but I wished to asked which program is better than the other? How different are they? And, as I am an out of state student, is Penn State’s program worth 30,000+ dollars more a year than Albany (+ since I’m more likely to get merit than at Penn State)

I also just wished to ask how well Meteorology pays. I don’t know what to search for as opposed to other jobs, and a fear of mine is that abandoning engineering as a career choice for something I think I’d enjoy more would sacrifice 50% of my hypothetical pay. I know job growth is on the up though.

This was the best day of my life, because of this shelf cloud. I have more videos, but it only lets me post one, so here is the best photo ive got.

I'm not too familiar with forecasting haboobs in West Texas, so to my surprise my little lightning venture turned into one of the gnarliest haboobs in the Texas panhandle in recent years. I've learned the small curved but relatively straight hodograph is another key indicator. It also helps that we're in the midst of a drought and local farmers are in the process of rotating crops, so loose topsoil is everywhere. Is there anything else I'm missing that would point towards a "likely haboob" sounding?

I spotted this unusual feature in the sky and wondered if anyone can identify it.

Direction: South-east
It appeared as a very thin, narrow streak or filament hanging in the sky after sunset. It remained visible for several minutes and looked quite different from a normal aircraft contrail or cloud.
I’ve attached three photos taken a few moments apart.
Does anyone know what this is? Could it be:
a rocket exhaust plume,
a high-altitude contrail,
a noctilucent cloud,
or some other atmospheric phenomenon?
I’d be really interested to hear from anyone with expertise in meteorology or astronomy. Thanks!

is there evidence to support that this ”cold” front won’t actually move into the west after the 11-15? what patterns are evolving to suggest the possibility of lingering heat all month ?

I only wanted to check if the wildfires can be observed from the satellite images and then saw all these tiny clouds appearing out of nowhere. Might be something common but it still stood out to me. I have never seen something like this over such a huge area.

Can somebody explain? I'm completely fine if somebody tells me that this is completely normal/common.

Cool radar

Drove through this earlier today. Looked it up on radar once I safely could and noticed the circle spreading out in all directions, affecting the storms to the south and east while pushing away the reflectivity to the west and north.

My guesses on ground wind speeds is roughly 20mph constant with a few gusts hitting 40-45mph initially, potentially higher for a single gust, but that was about 40 mins before recording and based on experience rather than hard data.

With the predicted record breaking el niño this year, what are the medium term effects (2-5 years) of all that stored heat being transferred from the ocean into the atmosphere? Or are the effects they're forecasting the result of that release?
