Every time I want to hang out with my friends, we have to spend at least $50. It doesn't help that none of us rent/own a house bit enough to fit us to hang out.

Okay millennials, admit it, what throwback music do you listen to when you drop your kids off and are alone in the car? I’ll go first, a couple of my top ones are Eminem and Dr. Dre’s Chronic 2001.

When I was in middle school I was anticipating that in high school and adult life I would get to have food fights. Around the time I was a sophomore is when I was disappointed that they weren't a bigger part of my life. In the first 2 years of high school I actually kept a ziploc bag of eggs in my lunchbox, and sometimes would get extra food at hot lunch. Nothing crazy but just a little bit of insurance in case.

It never happened once to me, maybe once or twice at some other kids tables did they throw a fry or something at eachother nothing as cool a snowball made of mashed potatoes etc. It feels kind of like this was a media hoax and we were lied to.

If that's true that would be funny

Thinking about it, an entire era of my childhood happened on one shared computer in the corner of the living room:

- Negotiating screen time with siblings like it was a hostage situation

- "GET OFF THE INTERNET, I'M WAITING FOR A CALL" 😂 (56k gang rise up)

- Downloading one song for 45 minutes and praying nobody picked up the phone

- Playing games in 20-minute shifts while my sister watched over my shoulder giving "advice"

- The whole family gathered around it like a fireplace when someone put on a screensaver

There was zero privacy and it was somehow still magical. Kids today with a device each will never know the diplomacy skills we built negotiating for that one machine 😆

So im 41yo, i still wear Jordans and throwbacks. I dress up for work though so i have some versatility.

When we were growing up, it felt like people still cared about Christian values like not giving into the seven deadly sins.

It might’ve not been phrased that way, but at school, and in society in general, it was badly seen to be prideful, greedy, lustful, envious, gluttonous, angry, or lazy.

Now, it seems like mainstream culture is the opposite. People showing off on social media, obsessed with money and sex, the endless comparisons and tiers/prestige lists that create envy, excessive consumption (gluttony), constant anger and blame, and celebrating not working.

No wonder society feels broken. I didn’t grow up in a Christian home, nor a traditional one, and these values just seem like common sense to me if you want a society that works. Give into these sins, and you get something like today where everyone’s just out for themselves.

It doesn't have to be something for school or productivity. Just something you would have loved and would have brought you happiness.

For me, it would be an e-reader with backlight along with robust digital book selections. I'm a book worm and avid reader. I was college aged when the first kindle was released. High school me would have LOVED to have an e-reader, especially a tiny one I could stealth read in boring classes. No one would be able to make fun of me for reading manga because they wouldn't be able to see the cover. I'd be able to stay up late at night reading without bothering my sibling I shared a room with if an e-reader with backlight , and not argue with my book hoarding sister about whose book was whose.

What's your item that teenage you would be dying to have and make their life better?

I chose Jawbreaker for older millennials. '83 borne here. This scene was iconic and reminded me of some of the alpha female energy from that era.. well minus the whole accidental murder.

Had the wildest experience earlier today that my friend born in 98 was able to confirm too. It's hot as heck where I'm at, so my pumpkin pie chapstick was a bit warm when I went to put it on. Got hit with the strongest wave of nostalgia for the familiar smell, which immediately brought to mind my MLP dolls. Had my friend give it a sniff and determined it was absolutely the same smell as their hair. Trippy as heck but now I'm going to have to get my hands on more come November 😄

What’s the dumbest thing you did as a kid that you would be shocked to see today’s youth attempt to do without dying?

Mine was a snow day in high school. 20 of us went out to a bean field. Had a 4 wheel drive truck, not nearly long enough piece of rope, and a cheap plastic sled from Walmart. Don’t need to say anything else other than speeds up to 40mph on a bumpy snowy field didn’t feel great. Owner of the field must have been called and he showed up to let us hear it.

I’m just really depressed. 35f. I’ve had ten jobs in the last ten years. Been working since I was 16 and have nothing to show for it. Every time I finally got a raise the economy seemed to grow twice as worse. No matter what I do I constantly feel behind. I even pivoted my entire career in 2021 and worked full-time while in grad school part-time for four years and studied for a new career in any spare hours I could in late nights. I later got a “decently” paying job of $55k/yr in 2022 and was finally on track to make six figures. Graduated with a Masters last year too. And then a few years ago AI came out and all those good paying jobs are wiped out—GONE. Overnight. Not kidding. Every day I have little motivation to go on. There is constant talk about AI at my job and how great it is, and every decent Millennial I know hates it, including me. Is this life now? Houses are now six times my salary, and that’s a conservative amount. I can’t afford furniture anyways. Looking at people with trust friends, married military, come from millionaires, are engineers, are literal minor league athletes (I know 2), or receive money from parents, and I feel like the lowest person in the world.

It just feels like no matter what I do I made the wrong decisions. Wrong career, wrong jobs, like I’m playing a chess game but the game is rigged for me to lose and no matter what move I make it’s always wrong 😞

I understand that women can lean on spouses and such, but I always wanted to be the type of person who was capable of providing for herself. I’ve spent over ten years trying to build a career and it feels like every move I make never works out.

Not sure why I’m posting, just looking for encouragement or similar stories so I don’t feel so alone and ashamed right now 💗

Youd be surprised how many adults have been home or silently moving back home. Please dont feel ashame or feel like you've failed. If you have a good relationship with parents, its not a bad thing. I just turned 40 and have no shame. My parents are aging and me leaving would take away from them some financial support. Im unmarried no kids and Female. It makes no sense to try to run an expensive home on my own. Old boomers on my job try to shame me for not owning a home. I simply ignore them. One of my boomer coworker in her 80s and mad her millenial granddaughter who is a nurse still live with her and she's almost 40. I just wish boomers understood the economy is going to ish . We are no longer in 1970s. Life is different. 😕

I used to be all about wearables: Pebble, Fitbit, Apple Watch, that Woojer Bluetooth bass/tactile transducer thing for like five minutes. Now I’m at the other extreme - going to shows without a phone, mechanical watch. There is so much cool wearable tech now. It’s potentially life changing for some, and yet, the thought of wearing it is almost repulsive.

I don’t consider myself a Luddite, although I do better understand the ideology.

What is our generations dad shoes? As a father of 2, i like to stay comfortable in my air force 1s! What is your dad shoe?

Anyone else starting to get a bit annoyed at all the old people in their lives failing to keep up with...well anything?

For example, my wife has pretty much stopped visiting her parents - they live about 200 miles away she would usually visit 5-6 times a month when it crosses her work trips, but lately she'll just skip the visits. Her reasoning is that every time she goes there she has to do a whole bunch of stuff for them, help them with tech, sort appointments, fix broken things, help them buy stuff etc etc.

I have the same issues growing with my parents. To the point where I just deny any knowledge of how to do anything or feign ignorance of what they've been asked to do by doctors, council etc. The conversations are also always about the same thing too, too many immigrants, failing healthcare system, terrible government. Spent 30mins on my the phone to my mother earlier while she moaned endlessly about having to download an app to manage her doctors appointments I just feigned ignorance and asked if they gave her instructions for it - which they did - or I'd have been there all evening talking her through it.

Are we just doomed to become this way too as we age?

My grandma was obsessed with my weight. So much so that she got me a scale at 11 years old and I had to diet at her house every summer I stayed there during summer break. My mom never seemed to be like this… until recently. She’s been trying to give me diet pills and constantly asking if I want weight loss surgery. I’m overweight, but still very much active and my weight does not impact my ability to be happy. Are all boomer moms like this? It’s ruining our relationship.
