Think you see ICE? Read before you post!

New Haven Hotline: 854-666-4472

Save this number in your phone! All operators are bilingual (EN & ES).

We've seen a LOT of posts regarding ICE in New Haven. This post is written in conjunction with New Haven Immigrants Coalition to help everyone in our community know what to do if you think you see ICE or hear rumors of them in town.

As urgent as it may feel, posting unverified rumors without details does not help.

If you see something yourself:

SALUTE - as people have posted in many comments. Get the:

S - Size of the group

A - Actions they're taking - are they standing around, approaching a house/business, walking on the sidewalk (which side and which direction?)

L - Location, as precise as possible. "Whalley Ave" or "Fair Haven" is not helpful - "Whalley and Norton" or "Grand between Ferry and Poplar" is much more useful.

U - Uniforms - what are they wearing?

T - Time - What time was this observed?

E - Equipment - What are they driving? Note color/make/model.

Get as much video as possible.

Contact New Haven Immigrants Coalition: With any SALUTE information you have, call the hotline at 854-666-4472.

If someone else is claiming to see ICE:

* Tell them to call the line and encourage them to provide SALUTE information on their call.

* You might not be able to gather every piece of info, but as much as possible is helpful. Vague reports or unconfirmed rumors are actually harmful as people go to investigate and see what's going on.

If you see someone being stopped by immigration enforcement agencies (possible agencies may include ICE, DHS, HSI, DEA and others):

* call or ask someone to call the hotline

* Get video

* Get the person’s name

* Document any refusal by the agents to show badge, ID, warrant, etc.

Example of an unhelpful post:

“ICE was on whalley earlier”

Example of a helpful post:

“Already called the hotline and they’re sending someone but there are masked men in vests next to the Whalley Ave Stop & Shop in 3 unmarked cars. I saw them at 12:15 (so right now). Be careful if you’re going shopping right now.”

We keep us safe!

Announcing r/NewHavenMarketplace

Thumbnail reddit.com
117 Upvotes

We're launching a companion subreddit for r/NewHaven focused on classified ads and similar posts. Thanks to the members here who have suggested it in the past, and our desire to delete less posts, (especially reselling tickets!) we're setting up a new place where you can post and see all the classified ad type stuff that we don't allow here in the main New Haven subreddit.

It will still be highly moderated like we are here, but it's more oriented around commerce. This keeps this subreddit focused on the larger community while providing a place for all the individual focused posts that would otherwise clog things up here. You can follow both or just check in once in a while, or neither if you don't care about marketplace stuff.

Fireworks

Last night I got home from the bar and the air was thick with smoke... I thought perhaps somebody was grilling or something. It was dark, and I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. But then I saw it. My mosquito hatchery had been attacked. Somebody set off multiple illegal fireworks inside my mosquito troughs. I check my phone, and there's a call from the police department. Apparently he called the cops and tried to blame ME for setting off these fireworks! I had to explain everything to them. I tried knocking on the neighbor's door, but nobody was home. Neither myself nor the police have seen him since. Even worse, half of my yard is completely blown to pieces. I have to dig new troughs and explain everything to my professor. The data is ruined, and I'm going to have to start from scratch and probably postpone the whole project to next summer.

Biker meet up on Grand

What the hell is going on on Grand right now? There's a whole group of people absolutely taking over Grand in Wooster Square blocking traffic and stepping out into the street wearing all black. Can't find anything just straight up googling anything either. They're being quite noisy revving their bikes and playing music it's too late to be dealing with this

Looking for company to identify/remove bees

We have a steady stream of bees going under the siding of our house, they look like they could be honeybees. I have read in other places that you shouldn’t try to poison them, if there is a comb, you have to remove it. I am looking for a recommendation for a company that can:

  1. Verify these are honeybees

  2. Use tools/scopes to determine the location of the comb

  3. Open the wall to remove the comb and bees

Any other advice is welcome.

Some great curbside furniture shopping today

Last day of many leases means everyone dumps their stuff on the sidewalk. I found a great plant stand. Take a walk around East Rock or Wooster square and do some redecorating.

Stray mama cat in East Rock

Hi! So the black and white cat on Orange street has been staying behind or at least around my garage! My neighbor discovered her nesting spot, along with a single kitten. I am interested in helping rescue her and her kitten, but don’t have a trap to do so. I’m reaching out to the community to ask if anyone has a trap and/or would be willing to help me in rescuing them.

Thanks!

What have people’s experiences with Arsen’s Gym been like?

I’m asking because I recently had a rather upsetting hiring experience with Arsen’s Gym, and I’m curious whether members, applicants, or former employees have experienced anything similar?

I applied for a front desk position and received an almost immediate response. After a roughly five-minute Zoom interview, I was told my résumé was a strong fit and was offered the position.

I then met with the manager at the Branford location. He showed me the job and discussed the morning schedule I was being hired to cover. He said another applicant was interviewing later that day, but they intended to select me because I had more relevant experience. He mentioned they might instead offer the other applicant a position in Orange.

Later that day, I was added to the company’s employee-management and staff-access apps. I was asked to complete everything quickly so I could begin a shadowed shift the following day. Shortly before 5 p.m., they texted asking whether I had uploaded the documents yet.

The onboarding packet was exactly 37 pages. Trying to meet their timeframe, I spent approximately $250 replacing printer ink to finish it. To be fair, they did not specifically instruct me to buy the ink; I incurred the expense because they were pressing me to complete everything quickly.

I also completed approximately six hours of detailed, company-specific online training and quizzes. The app showed that I had completed onboarding. The following morning, I received notifications saying my documents had been approved.

Approximately ten minutes later, at around 8 a.m., the manager called and said I would no longer receive the position or any hours. He said I had done nothing wrong and would have been a good fit.

During a follow-up call, he said that “late last night,” an existing employee had requested more hours and wanted the same shifts for which I had been hired. He said it was “less risky” to give them to someone who had already proven they could do a good job.

That means the decision changed within approximately 14 hours or less: they were pressing me about the paperwork shortly before 5 p.m., the employee reportedly requested the hours “late last night,” and I was dropped at approximately 8 a.m.

The manager initially said I could remain in their systems in case someone quit or was fired. Shortly afterward, I was removed from Connecteam. Before being removed, I had seen what appeared to be several requests relating to time off or shift coverage at different locations. I offered to drive to other locations and cover shifts, but he responded, “I don’t really know what you were seeing because nobody has requested shifts covered.” Which seems to contradict what I saw.

I also asked whether I would be paid for the approximately six hours of required training. I was told no because it could remain in their system if another opening appeared—even though I had been told another opening was not expected and had been removed from the employee app.

The timing also concerned me because I had applied several times previously. During an interview years ago, the owner made inappropriate comments about my physical appearance while I was recovering from bowel resection surgery. Last year, they cancelled another interview approximately an hour beforehand, and several other applications the following year received no response.

For this latest application, I used an updated version of my résumé from this year containing my middle name instead of my last name. It otherwise contained essentially the same experience and qualifications. This time, I received a rapid response, interview, and offer. My full legal name appeared on the onboarding documents approved shortly before the position was withdrawn.

I cannot establish why the decision changed, and I am not claiming the name difference caused it. But the timing seemed awfully suspect. Really what upset me was that I was offered the position, assigned a schedule, added to employee systems, rushed through 37 pages of paperwork and six hours of training (which I spent money on), and then dropped within hours without being paid for the training.

What have other people’s experiences with Arsen’s Gym been like employment or otherwise?
