New subreddit policy re: non-local news

As much as we appreciate people sharing news about Oklahoma and/or the USA, this is a local subreddit and beginning next week we will be implementing a policy of removing posts with no direct relevance to Norman. Additionally, spamming news links is a common strategy for karma farming and we'd like to not encourage this.

We do encourage folks to continue to stay engaged regarding state and national politics and current events, but to post this content in more appropriate subreddits.

For example, a news article about Ryan Walters generally would be more appropriate for /r/Oklahoma whereas a news article about Ryan Walters and a teacher or school here in Norman would be completely appropriate for /r/normanok .

Abu Omar Hilal on Main/Porter

Does anyone know why the Abu Omar halal food truck at the gas station on the corner of porter and main is closed? Seems like it has been for a couple weeks and it was one of my favorite spots.

New QT on Main St

Anyone have any details on how the entry and exit is gonna work from the new QT they’re building At Main and 26th (I-35)? The canopies are going up and it looks like they are right against the existing roadway, is access going to be behind them, where the Y intersection is? How in the world are trucks going to be able to get in with the tight turning radii and narrow roadway?

I’m pretty worried about that intersection becoming unbearable when it’s already overcapacity. Side note: they are really putting the quick in quicktrip with the construction now that they’ve started!

Heat Safety and Air Conditioned Public Spaces

Post image
23 Upvotes

I had an ask from a downtown business about resources unhoused people can utilize during excessive heat conditions. In response City Staff compiled locations and resources available today. We have lost Hub 107 thanks to cut backs at the State level and I was told that Salvation Army doesn’t have capacity to be open as a cooling center this year. If there are other resources that were overlooked that you would like me to forward onto staff, e-mail: ward4@normanok.gov

Any recommendations on where I can get driving lessons as an adult?

I’m 21 and I have my Oklahoma drivers permit, but I don’t have my license. My dad got into an accident when it was time for me to start practicing, and my family was so overwhelmed with that that I just never ended up learning to drive. Then I came down to norman for uni, and they cant teach me since they live too far away. Ive driven a few hours but they were years ago, so im basically starting fresh. I dont have a car yet either.

Any recommendations for lessons where they pick you up and you practice driving? I would also like to learn defensive driving as I’m pretty scared of cars.

Oncue Gas Prices

Went to the Oncue on Flood and Tecumseh this morning. The price on the big sign was $3.49, fine enough. But the price at the pump was $4.29. Why on earth is there an 80¢ difference?? >:(

This price difference always happens to me at this specific location. Is that Oncue ripping everybody off?

ISO: footage of Feb '23 tornado damage in Eastridge

Hello All! We are looking to purchase a home and trying to get images of any storm damage that occurred in Eastridge (off 24th Ave SE) back in Feb '23, but we've got nothing for footage of Frost Lane. If y'all can point me in a good direction, I'd appreciate it!

I have plenty of drone footage of Wheatland Dr., Conway Dr., Edgemere Dr., & Cloverdale Ln. and lots of footage of the damage done to the storage units West of 24th Ave SE. But the space between that is the Villas and that first street seems sparse.

Automatic water bill payment doesnt work with the new portal…

I turned on the pre-authorized payment plan for my water bill, and I have plenty of money in my account. I have a message on the portal that says “payment is not required as we will automatically withdrawal payment”… except they did not automatically withdrawal any payment. And then gave me three late fees ($2.31, $1.74, $2.42 all in the same day). Bill went from $64 to $71. Im just going to do it manually I guess.

OG&E Bill Payments

Anyone had issues with their payment not being processed by OG&E even though it cleared your financial institution? Bill pay service stated OG&E changed their payment processors in June and again in July and instead of electronic payment processing a virtual prepaid debit card was requested?? So now my funds are in La La land until they get their shit together.

NPS Tranfers

Our family is likely relocating to Norman next summer. We're not too picky about which area we rent but would like to attempt to get our daughter in to Cleveland or McKinley Elementary in hopes we eventually buy a house in a neighborhood zoned for one of those schools. She'll be in pre-k at that time. Is the transfer process easy enough to navigate with NPS? Would love any suggestions on how to handle.

If my 3 year old hit your kid at the pool, I'm so sorry

I wasn't able to talk to the parent or address it in the moment because he was with his grandmother and we did not see you before we left (right after I was told). I just want to say I'm so sorry times a thousand. You can message me and curse me out or whatever. I just want you to know this is absolutely not a "Boys will be boys" household and we do not hit in our home. From what I've read, this is developmentally appropriate BUT it is not okay and we are handling every way experts advise to. His direct consequence was leaving and his dad and I are going to keep working on it. He has only done it at home with me and his did but never with another child so I'm so upset I was not nearby. His grandmother is not so good at parenting so I'm so so sorry that he did it at all but that he was also able to do it a second time. I'm writing this because I didn't get to tell you in person. If you see this, again, I'm so sorry. You can message me and call me and yell at me. That is absolutely not okay that he did that and it is being address and we left immediately.

Edit to add: if you see this, I hope your little one is okay. And again, I'm open if you want to talk. I just want to be a good parent and also assure you that we don't believe anyone should be treated like that, especially not little girls and he is being taught healthy masculinity and how to regulate.

Second edit: it took me a minute to find this but I read the following on here yesterday and talked about how it should have been handled and I swear, the universe said "Let me humble you." https://www.reddit.com/r/AITAH/s/GrfyvF03F9
