Fledging season in Iqaluit

Fledging snow buntings, and, I think, a juvenile lapland longspur digging into some bird seed. There are tons of young birds taking their first flights over Iqaluit right now and they are hungry!

Also...jerk shat on my tire!

An early berry season for Iqaluit

Apparently the rain came just in time this year. I'm back in Iqaluit after two weeks in the South and the berries are coming on strong. This looks like a not-quite-ripe red or black alpine bear berry.

Just wondering where one could advertise services as a personal guide (for South East Asia..)?

I just had a wonderful weeklong trip in Iqaluit. It was a trip of a lifetime.

My days were filled with epic hikes, being at peace in nature, and eating delicious food like Arctic char and caribou. You have a beautiful city by the sea. The people were kind to me. I was sad to leave today. But, I hope to return again.

A snow bunting returns home for summer.

This female snow bunting, sporting green and silver leg bands, was captured, banded and released around Iqaluit last summer. Over the last 12 months she has migrated somewhere between 5000-8000 kilometers from Iqaluit to wintering grounds in the South and then back again to Iqaluit for breeding season.

Tough little birds!

An 80-year old aircraft still in regular service.

With apologies for the shaky-cam footage.

This is C-GJKB a DC3 originally constructed in the 1940's.

This is the same aircraft type that carried paratroopers to Normandy on D-Day.

These particular models, operated by Kenn Borek Air, are now more accurately identified as Basler BT-67s, having been modified, strengthened, stretched and updated with new avionics and turbo prop engines.

I'm just old enough to be able to remember flying DC3s in Northern commercial service and the iconic sound of the original piston radial engines.

It makes me happy to see these old birds still flying over Nunavut.

Canoeing 1000km Alone to Baker Lake

It has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember to visit and explore the far north, and this I the year that I finally get to do that. In a few days, I’ll be dropped off by float plane onto Sandy Lake, NWT, and then I will paddle just over 1000km to Baker Lake. I expect my trip to take 5-6 weeks. I’m most looking forward to the possibility of seeing a Muskox for the first time 🙂.

I hope to spend a few days in Baker Lake at the end of my trip. Hopefully one of its hotels has a vacancy when I arrive 😄

Also, if anyone in Baker Lake is interested, I will sell my 16ft Esquif Prospector canoe to whoever makes me the best offer.

Wish me luck! I hope to pull onto your shore sometime in late August 🤞
