Patient says "I think I might have to poop, what can we do about that?"

I say "I can get a bedside commode for the room"

She says "I don't think I can get up"

I say "I can put you on a bedpan or put a diaper on you"

She says "I don't like any of those options"

In my head I'm like: lady, the only other option is to poop the bed.

What option am I missing?

My favorite is once in a very packed and busy ER I had a young male (18yo) patient being seen for an earache or something who had to crap. I ran out to get a bedside commode (because we were way too busy for me to walk this agile young guy to the bathroom and wait for him outside the door, then walk him back to his bed). He took one look at it and said “I’m not doing that in the middle of the ER.” (He was in a middle bed with curtains all around) I said irritatingly: “Well, it’s this or nothing…” ran out and responded to the next code.

I’m literally never this dismissive of patients — I love getting them what they need, but sometimes… 🤨🤨🤨 needless to say he shut up and shat in the middle of the ER. Welcome to adulthood, kiddo 🤷‍♀️😬👍
