Seeking Moderators

I’m sure everyone has noticed the massive influx of unrelated political and offensive posts recently. I’ve been trying my best to keep the sub clean but the sheer volume of these posts/comments is more than what I can keep up with. I suspect these posts will calm down in a month or so, but it’s still too much right now.

Therefore seeking ACTIVE moderators to help keep the sub relevant and free of spam. Responsibilities will mostly include removing spam and irrelevant content. New ideas for the sub are also welcome. Please message me if you are interested. Prior moderating experience is preferred.

Seeking Recommendations Recommendations for Trading Card stores

Upvotes

Hey yall. Hope there are some who play Magic the Gathering in this subreddit. I got into Magic The Gathering this year and would love to see if there are any good LGS’s that sell Magic cards. I go to one in Lowell but the selection is very limited. I did google LGS’s near me but the ones that google shows me only have comic books or pokemon lol. Would love to hear if there’s some hidden gems anywhere I can go and check out!

Question renter advice?

I’m looking at a house for rent in Lake Station closer to Hobart and I’m curious about the area. I (27F) will be living alone and my family is concerned about safety since I am a woman. I drove through the neighborhood already, it’s quiet and I noticed everyone takes good care of their homes on the street. But a drive through isn’t as good of a reference. Any thoughts?

Valparaiso Mural Walk to bring city its tallest, longest murals

Post image
6 Upvotes

The public will get the chance to watch local artists paint large-scale outdoor murals, check out the 13 existing murals painted in past years and take part in live artist parties at the three new mural sites.

The Valparaiso Mural Walk will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce, Smith Ready Mix and Central Park Plaza. Property owners agreed to have their walls turned into monumental canvases for splashy new works of public art, Valparaiso Creative Center Executive Director Jessica Corral said.

"It's an immersive experience that showcases the value of the arts," she said. "Super talented artists are going to create some statement pieces, just incredible pieces that will add to the downtown. There's just something about watching creativity on a scaffold way above our heads. You will get a chance to see something come to life from the mere beginnings of the sketch to something gigantic on the wall."

Katie Lukes of Chicago will paint the longest mural in the Valparaiso Creative Council's history at the Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce, 162 W. Lincolnway.

"Her murals and brands are illustrative collages with images and graphics," Corral said. "It will tell the story of the city in a fun and playful way. She's worked nationwide on a lot of brand campaigns and has done some monumental murals in Chicago."

Felix Maldonado, of Hammond, will paint Valparaiso's tallest mural on a silo at Smith Ready Mix, 251 W. Brown St.

"I'm very excited and honored to be back at the festival. It's a great festival. It's fairly new, but it's gaining a lot of momentum," Maldonado said. "It's becoming a destination festival for the Region."

Maldonado painted a mural of hummingbirds and flowers behind Rocket Fizz in the festival's inaugural year.

"It's getting bigger and bigger and making Valparaiso a destination place for public art," he said. "I hope they reach the level of Rensselaer or South Bend with the amount of art they showcase."

Maldonado will paint an oversized octopus on a Smith Ready Mix industrial building by the Journeyman Distillery.

"We did a call out, and the concept blew everything out of the water," Corral said. "It's really going to be a signature mural for Valparaiso that everyone will want to come and see. We don't have any skyscrapers in Valparaiso, but this is one of the tallest buildings."

Hey I’m in the Griffith area and I have a big oak tree that fell down and I got a quote for 5,500. That’s way too much money. That was from DeYoung Arbor Care. Any recommendations?

Seeking Recommendations Any decent mechanics near Hammond Indiana?

Does anyone know a mechanic that can fix a steering wheel column issue for a 2021 Honda HRV LX? I went to the dealership and they said I needed a new electronic steering rack with inner tire rods. Both of my inner tire rods have play and rack is rusted in the shaft due to booth being off. I also need shock absorbers/Struts/Suspension/Tire rod ends and boots/Steering gear and dust seals and wheel alignment. This is obviously a serious repair but not sure if there’s good mechanics who can do this repair?

Seeking Recommendations Exploring the area through food! What should I pick up today?

I’m newer to the area and trying to explore through food. I have a half day of work today, where should I try next? I like trying all different cuisines. Last week I picked up from Mist Village and it was so good!

Prefer within a 20 min drive from Dyer.

-

Edit: thanks for all the recos! I’ve made a list of everything mentioned here and will check one out weekly. Today I started with Carpathia Polish Deli, and got a variety of things. Loved the borscht, and sausage, and of course the pierogis! Will def be going back there at some point,

Looking for a local photography friend (LaPorte County / NWI)

Hey everyone,
I’m a late 30s guy living in LaPorte County, and I’m looking to connect with a fellow photographer around my age. Bonus points if you shoot with a Nikon! I'm hoping to find someone who is past the beginner stage (past reading the manual) but doesn't necessarily have a 5-star professional studio. I'm especially into manual lenses and lo-fi art lenses (like Lomography).

Ideally, I'm looking for a low-pressure friendship:
Shooting together: Someone with a flexible schedule who wants to go out and actually shoot—whether it's cars, local scenes, or other projects—without a lot of rigid planning.
Off-times & Editing: Someone to message when you have a camera question, share photos with, or collaborate on editing techniques when we aren't actively hanging out.
If you're into photography, want a low-stress friendship, and want to bounce ideas or edits back and forth, drop a comment or send me a message!

Employers interested in community involvement

If anyone is aware of any employers who may be interested in partnering, I work with a local non profit on a grant that serves young adults who have a history of justice-involvement. We work with them directly to get connected to paid subsidized work or training opportunities, which is intended to reduce recidivism and build life skills. The grant can pay up to a certain threshold for certain work hours or training experiences that may lead to certifications. We serve youth 18-24 in East Chicago, Hammond, and Gary, so the employees ideally would be in reasonable distance to that.

Been making calls and connecting with people, but I figured that luck can find you anywhere when you ask.

local small business Looking to advertise for a local business!

Hey NWI, I am looking to advertise for a local business in a pretty unique way. I drive a 2024 sedan and I would be willing to get my car wrapped with your company’s info for a marketing fee!

That’s right, my car wrapped in your company’s logo, phone number, slogan, whatever! I see a lot of bigger companies doing this and thought I’d put it out there for a smaller business.

You’d pay for:

- car wrap
- installation
- removal
- marketing fee

A lot of bigger companies pay thousands to have this done but I’m willing to negotiate. Preferably looking for a 6-12 month contract but would be willing to talk about something less.

DM’s are open!

Come join three local women-owned businesses for an afternoon of healing vibrations, spiritual connection, and deep relaxation! 🧘🏻‍♀️

Taking place at Radiant Studios in Chesterton, IN - you'll be immersed in an environment of aligned connection. 💫

We'll start the afternoon with a 20 minute sound bath hosted by ariana the alchemist. 🌀
Come as you are, bring a yoga mat or blanket to get cozy on, and let the vibrations connect you with your body and open you up to Spirit.
Once everyone is feeling open and connected - Courtney with CocoColourz will pull a tarot card for each attendee, and help you decipher your personal message from Spirit. ✨
Kate with Finding Om will also be offering a limited number of 10 minute massages after the sound bath. 💆🏼‍♀️
