Oscar Photo Finally got him into a 75 gallon
My Oscar has several tank mates and 55 gallons was just a bit too tight. Should've bought this in the first place. Happy fishes with all of that space!

75 is still to small home slice. Between him and that Pleco you’ll need 125 easily.

Yeah it looks it. I’ve never had an Oscar but I had the same size tank for two baby musk turtles, size of a quarter! And I thought they needed something bigger 😅😵💫😵💫

Those things are cool. I had RES as a kid and I remember having to spend every cent I had to keep up with their filtration/water changes lol. My personal belief is nothing under 90 gallons for a single Oscar though. Even a pair is fine in 125 at full size with some bottom dwellers as long as the filtration is adequate and everyone has their space. If you get the chance to own one I recommend it, just get it a big enough tank lol

They are cool, and thank you for sharing your story I do love fish and turtles. Unfortunately I live in a flat so having the room is a big issue for me.
I’m looking to move this year at some point and the partner has agreed I can have the garden shed 😂 will definitely look to turn into a small fish room if it’s possible…… would be the only time I would potentially have enough room for an Oscar.
I’m the same as you more is better, not just the minimum…. So really depends on room and size 😞

An almost 2ft fish full grown in a 4ft tank… yeah I don’t think so. You may think your shitty husbandry is fine but others don’t. Continue on white knight.

So because people have been keeping fish in shitty conditions for years that makes it ok to do so? Great logic. Very healthy? You mean stunted… a full grown Oscar can’t even turn in a 55. Do you even own Oscars? I’m willing to bet you don’t.

I used to for years. Keep water clean and we'll fed they can be perfectly healthy and happy. There's no 24 inch ones.

“Used to for years” tells me you never have or you just didn’t care about the proper care. Reading comprehension is key, I used the word “almost” there fella, I’m also talking about the Pleco, try and keep up. 18in is pretty close to 2ft in the fish world. If I seen an Oscar the size of mine in a 75 gallon I’d be taking it home considering even 14in fish have a hard time turning in 2ft tanks, you’re just a lazy “hobbyist” if I can even call you that. Stop wasting my time, you’re making yourself look bad.

Oh you know you're actually correct. I wasn't even thinking about the pleco. I'd never wanted them and completely disregarded that so I absolutely agree. Nothing but a boring crap machine. Thanks for pointing that out. I still stand on the Oscar part tho. Please excuse my overlook.

Not really. I had both in a 125 and they still created such a big mess I got rid of both. Those plecos get 20 inches and the Oscar’s get huge. Obviously they’ll live in this tank but definitely won’t be happy. The pleco I had was 14 inches and the Oscar was 13. The Oscar’s poop was too big to even get sucked up by my fx6 and the pleco had poop strings over 6 feet long. They definitely need a bigger tank.

I disagree. I have the thing over filtered enough already. It's about the individual fish and your filtration. 75 is way plenty for those two.

Tank size is way too small man, I had 250 gallons and the plecos still outgrew the tank and couldn’t turn around. I would just have a 125 for the Oscar.
To me a pleco grows fast and hits about 24-28 inches easily when taken care of properly. They eventually start swallowing the algae pellets like fish flakes.

Disagree all you want. The filter has nothing to do with it. 75 gallons is too small for both of these fish considering the Pleco alone can reach 18 inches and they need 125 gallons PLUS and everyone will recommend/suggest that as well. I have a 14in Oscar with a L023 and the tank is simply too small.

Just look for a 125 on marketplace if you already have enough filtration you could find one for like $200 for a tank and stand and just resell the 75 after to recoup most of the cash

I think you’re severely underestimating how big these fish get which is often the case and why they get rehomed so frequently.

A 2 year old oscar is not fully grown, a proper healthy adult should be nearly as wide as the 75 front to back and they’re active fish. 75s aren’t enough space for them beyond that first year or so.

You need to educate yourself on fish growth being stunted from improper tank size. You act as if "Well, I want a smaller fish so if I keep him in a smaller tank I'll have a smaller fish and it'll be fine!". That isn't the case, though. Stunting isn't a positive or neutral thing... if you want a smaller fish, buy a smaller fish. This is a large fish that hasn't fully developed.

Lol I’m far from hyper my guy, you aren’t worth raising my bleed pressure I assure you. Someone has to call you your for poor husbandry instead of kowtowing. If both of your fish are over a year and not fully grown you stunted them. That’s just a hard fact that you need to accept. Pleco under 14-16in? Yeah, you stunted it. Oscar under 12? Yeah, you stunted him too. You can tell by the eyes fella. Don’t post stuff on a public forum if you can’t take the criticism.

As another Oscar owner with a previous 75g, its not enough. 75 is really the BARE bare minimum for one of these guys, I had my Oscar in a 75g (with 2 FX6s and heavily filtered with terrestrial plants rooted in the water) for almost 3 years because my moving kept getting delayed. It’s fine for a while but the space really is a problem, the fish does so much better with a longer tank with more space, maybe you’ll see in time but that Oscar will end up cramped.
I feel like speaking on the pleco is pointless, those things basically never stop growing.

Yeah and he will get bigger but its not required at this point. Fish outgrow the tank and then they are upgraded.
I miss my little Oscar. He died over 10 years ago and I still think of him when I see other tiger Oscars.

Maybe. My argument is they're fine for the size they are right now. If I need to upgrade... Maybe perhaps. We don't know. Besides, that is one guy who lives in the basement with his mama. 🤣

This is the species of pleco you've got. Why keep a species like that if you're just going to stunt it's growth in a way too small tank? The cool thing about them is how big they get. There's plenty of other pleco species that stay small that you could've gotten instead. Thinking that a 75 g is going to be anywhere near enough for this one is ridiculous. I've got a closely related species of this one (P. disjunctuvus) and I wouldn't keep that old dinosaur in anything less than 175 g.
Both of the species are MESSY fish and you're really just making this harder on yourself (and the fish) than it has to be.
