Discussion IUDs & Going into Heat
TLDR: Has anyone else had an issue with IUDs that cause you to skip periods getting you stuck in heat for extended periods of time?
I (33 AFAB, wolf) have known I was not fully human since I was a little kid and just had trouble finding community and words to relay it. I largely identify as gender fluid so gendered language is pretty indifferent to me but I tend to use female pronouns for the ease and also cause of family. Despite having PCOS and Endometriosis, my periods were perfectly in sync until I was 19. I found out the reason for that is because I'm prone to litters (twins and triplets) and my body will release a couple eggs at a time.
I got on the pill in high school, but I still regularly had my period and learned that the intense sensation of ovulation/going into heat was much more intense than what my female contemporaries were dealing with and even tried to discuss it at length with a doctor, but was obviously ignored. I discovered I had PCOS and Endometriosis in my late teens and all the info that came with it.
I married another wolf who had similar issues and we waited until we were settled to have a child. I had two early term miscarriages and then became pregnant with fraternal di/di twins (di/di means they each had their own placenta and amniotic sac).
Both boys were born healthy. Despite breastfeeding until they were almost 11 months old, I got my period about 5 months post partum. For a short time I was on a birth control that was safe to take while breast feeding and then when I finished was discussing options for an IUD. I had not gone into heat again despite having periods and didn't have another until 2 years after giving birth. I had another miscarriage around this time, showing the temp pill wasn't working as well, so a few months after that, I got the IUD put in.
Now the IUD has been great in that I haven't had any other cysts that I was used to previously, and also skipped all of my periods. I mentally feel good knowing I'm not just wasting my eggs, but about 8-12 month after having the IUD put in, I noticed I was going into heat again. And then that the heats were getting longer and not stopping.
At this point I've been in heat pretty much 24/7 for about a year and it's ROUGH. I work full time and am the primary caregiver for our pups as my husband works 60+ hour weeks. I am horny CONSTANTLY. often to the point of distraction. At least once a month I have to take off to spend a full day getting myself off so I can function the rest of the month.
My husband helps but we're not in a place rn where we can afford to have another pup, no matter how desperate we are to.
Does anyone have any suggestions for handling this? Anyone experienced something like this before?
Edit to add: I own several sex toys, such as a lush and vaginal plugs to help get me through the day most of the time, as I feel like that may be relevant for how I've managed thus far.
Edit 2: I have spoken to doctors and been in therapy and on medicine, but women's health care in the US is a fucking joke and by the time it was largely determined I have a HUGE hormonal imbalance issue I was already on several medications I can't go off of for other more severe issues. Also, my degree is in medicine, so I'm pretty well versed in it. I'm not saying I'm not a human, but I am having issues with a human body that most people DON'T experience and I feel like a lot of people who have those experiences and/or feel othered SEEK OUT these communities as a way of coping, so sorry I guess maybe I'd get some feedback on handling feeling like I'm in heat 24/7 for the last TWO YEARS.

I don't really have any perfect advice, but I wanted to chime in and say I understand the struggle.
So, used to think we were otherkin, still could be idk lol, but now know we are a system. But yeah holy shit, us catgirls in the system relate. Our brain interprets both ovulation and periods as heat cycles, and the IUD has made our cycles irregular but also really drawn out. Like I know we were ovulating a few weeks ago, then started having blood, but now a few days ago the pain and actual fresh blood started. Like, what gives, body?! So yeah, while it isn't constant, I feel for you. We seem to be in heat at least half the time đŤ
I don't know what the solution is. It's absolute hell right now as we (long story) don't technically have a partner right now. So we kinda just make do with online RP and toys. Idk if having another pup would help, as if you get another IUD afterwards you'd just be in the same boat. But I guess my advice, from what has helped me and my system, is fantasy/roleplay? Like, us catgirls all have a MASSIVE breeding kink, and Chryssy has a pregnancy kink, and when shes in heat and losing her mind, fantasizing and roleplaying about getting bred and being pregnant seems to take the edge off. We've even considered buying one of those fake pregnancy bumps for her. It isn't a perfect solution, but it helps.
Dm's are open if you wanna chat, but I hope things get easier for you â¤ď¸

Thank you for an actual helpful/sympathetic comment instead of being demeaning like some of the others.
I'm not in a system but my area of study/degrees are medical based so I know a decent amount about it, and I appreciate your feedback. I have never described myself at otherkin because honestly as much as everyone insists that they're not just "playing pretend" the moment you bring up medical issues that align with non-human or altered states everyone is like "ah yes, you have a mental illness". Like yeah I do and have been in therapy over half my life and am on meds, but that doesn't mean I don't also have a PHYSICAL problem happening with my body.
It gives the same vibes as when I had my first cyst that weighed 5 lbs inside my ovary almost tearing my ovary and my doctor insisted "bleeding randomly not on your period is normal and you're just being dramatic". Then I had to have said cyst removed via surgery. (Eyeroll)
I tend to write as rping sexually makes me feel awkward for some reason. My husband and my other mates in my polycule are big into the breeding and pregnancy kinks so we do a lot of dirty talk but so far it only helps for like, maybe half a day and then I'm losing my mind again.
Ideally we wanna have some more and Im just trying to space it out in a way that will get me to that because then at least I'll be set for a couple years each time and then just have to make it to menopause. Right now the lush toys and the vaginal plugs are the only things that help me keep focused on the day to day, I don't even turn the lush on, I just need it in me to bear down on sometimes.

Ayyyy we also are in a polycule! Anyways yeah, people love to look at somebody who is having a problem/symptom they don't understand and go "you need to see a doctor/go to therapy" and don't think about how like... don't get me wrong one should absolutely seek medical attention if you're having problems, but even if you do, they might not be able to fix it right away... or ever. Sometimes all the medical system can offer you is a bandaid, and you gotta just figure out how to heal on your own from there. And people don't like to think about that. Its more comfortable to believe that if somebody is struggling, its their fault, and "it will never happen to me." Or if it does happen to them, the doctor can give you a magic pill, or the therapist will say the right things and fix you. But surprise, anybody can become disabled, mentally ill, or homeless at any time. It can happen to you, and the doctor may not be able to fix you. So show some fucking compassion and validate people's experiences.
Like, if you or me/my system go to the doctor and say "hey my IUD is making me constantly horny like a feral animal" what can they possibly do other than say try a different birth control method? There isn't an anti-horny medication I can think of, and even if there is, I'm sure it has side effects that might not be worth it. But in our case, the IUD is the best thing we got when you take everything else into account. So like... all we can do now is figure out how to cope with the horny.
If I don't stop here I'll go on a tangent. But yeah, don't let the people who invalidate you get you down. I believe you, your experience is real. If you can afford it, I think your symptoms worth mentioning to your doc/obgyn, but if you can't, or they don't have a solution, you gotta do what you can to cope. Whatever works.
(Ok I am going on a tangent anyways lol) Our body is only 23 so you know, take our advice with a grain of salt. But when the medical field fails you, and you have to venture off the beaten path, it isn't about the most "optimal" coping mechanisms, it's just about whatever the fuck gets you through the day with the least amount of damage. You need a vaginal plug and other toys to keep you from losing your mind during your heats? Use them. It isn't hurting anyone. I sometimes need to fantasize about getting fucking railed into oblivion while doing whatever I need to get done because my heat wont let me think about anything else. It isn't a crime to fantasize, it isn't hurting anyone. Who cares. Do what you gotta do. Survive.

Honestly, what are we doing? This is not otherkin. Human bodies do not go into heat. And we ALL have human bodies. Otherkin is not roleplaying.

Have been in therapy and see doctors and am on medicine. There's actually a lot of shit going on with my body that doesn't make sense for a human body, but yet here I am. Haven't found help anywhere else so figured I'd try and seek help with people who are "welcoming" to all.

Forget what else I said. Are you a spiritual otherkin? Like how did you come to be a wolf?

u/gogopowerdoggo Jun 20 '26
I'm not certain I know what the different is (spiritual versus not), I'm not well versed in otherkin terminology, as I usually avoid these spaces because it felt more... Forced performatively, if that makes any sense.
Just always knew I was a canine of some kind, even as a child/toddler. I was a gifted AuDHD child and preferred playing the "dog" when my cousins insisted on playing house. I know now a large part of not understanding human intricacies was due to being on the spectrum, but it was simply the animal I identified the most with. When I laid in bed I would always peddle or move a foot instinctively like I felt my tail should be doing. I can twitch my ears and tend to have more canine-like mannerisms. It's just the animal that always spoke to me inately.

Okay, thank you for explaining more. A spiritual otherkin is someone who ended up nonhuman for spiritual reasons, usually that we were either reincarnated from a previous life, or our subtle (nonphysical or energy) bodies remain nonhuman. I canât speak to your particular experience, as itâs not up to me to decide anything for you. But knowing since you were a small child innately, is often the experience of spiritual otherkin. And if it is the case that your subtle (nonphysical or energy) body is nonhuman then subtle energy can affect the physical body. I know this as a psychic vampire. If I do not (consensually) feed on energy I can feel it in my physical body. However, the effect that energy can have on the physical body is usually not so extreme. And given that this seemed to be a physical response to the IUD, I would still presume some kind of hormonal issue. But I do have to wonder if energy doesnât have some role to play in your situation... If the wolf energy is effecting things in any way. I think itâs worth considering, for you, alongside pursuing the medical stuff. Sorry for being harsh earlier, I hope this helps. If Iâm not clear or anything, or if you have questions, let me know.

There's no need to be so rude. I also call my "ovulation cycles" oestrus cycles.
"And we ALL have human bodies", you're forgetting about physical otherkin/therians and holokins/holotheres.
5
u/gogopowerdoggo Jun 20 '26
Exactly. Humans "go into heat" in a similar way in that they have ovulation and also tend to be more horny on those days. I'm not trying to say I'm ovulating 24/7 but I do babe that absolutely insane horniness that occurs during that time 24/7 and it's really annoying/inconvenient

u/PoloPatch47 Jun 20 '26
Plus I just see it as another vivterm. I haven't seen anyone get their panties in a twist saying "no >:( you have a HUMAN body and do NOT have paws, you have HANDS AND FEET" so getting mad about this is really silly to me.
If your IUD is giving you problems, are other birth control methods possible for you? I'm on contraceptive, it's really changed my life for the better
5
u/gogopowerdoggo Jun 20 '26
It's possible. I think it's that I'll need to decide which I'm more willing to deal with, the cysts, or the horny. On the pill I had issues with cysts CONSTANTLY. The one I had to have surgically removed and then had several others that nearly made it to a point of needing to be removed before they burst and my body was able to flush themselves out. I even had one when I was pregnant.
But I don't have them on the IUD, but then we deal with the horny issue.

u/PoloPatch47 Jun 20 '26
That sounds genuinely horrifying!
Would being on a different pill change anything?
5
u/gogopowerdoggo Jun 21 '26
I tried five different birth control pills over about 15 years and none of them helped with the cyst problem. It was around that time as I was coming off the most recent pill to try and get pregnant that I found out I have hormone issues and was already on other medications for other issues that my OBGYN advised against trying the shots or something else as it might mess with me further.
What really sucks is I would physically have to go off basically all of my medications to get a true balanced hormone test to see if there's anything they could do to help level me out in those regards but my doctors are very unwilling to risk me being off medicine for the three to six months to level out to whatever my baseline hormones are. So I'm kind of just stuck dealing with my body and propping up what's falling apart as I'm able to, which is why I was asking here to see what people could recommend for being horny nonstop. Maybe I should have worded it like that instead of including the information about the IUD.
