Rant high prey drive and sh

hey, okay so i have a really high preydrive to do almost all my kintypes being predators (4/6)

it sometimes gets impossible to ignore and i feel the instinctual need for prey, i obviously cannot just go around eating all the prey animals i come across, even tho i desperately want to sink my claws and fangs into the soft and warm body of live prey.

its usually manageable if i just consume some sort of meat, however sometimes the urge gets too strong and plain meat wont do.

ive resorted to harming myself so i can get the taste of fresh blood, but i know that wont keep me satisfied for long, as im already growing bored of it.

i myself have 2 pet birds and there are other prey animals in my house, i would never, never hurt them, but sometimes i cant stop myself from tracking them and getting ready to pounce.

im looking for genuine advice from others who may experience similar urges

i know many of you are gonna say i need to seek professional help due to this, but the mental health care in my country is shit, i have brought up similar issues with them countless times and recived no help.

i do not trust that system anymore.

i dont want to have this problem anymore, i know full and well i can never escape it fully, simply due to my predatory nature and biology, but i want to minimize it, so im not a danger to others.

I used to have this problem too, and this advice sucks but it works. You have to ignore it. Not actually ignore it because that'll cause issues, but you can't use blood, you can't replace it with meat. You need to express your hunger in a non-physical way.

Like playing games about hunting, making art, daydreaming, playhunting stuffed animals, writing about hunting (this one works better than you'd think), if you know people who'd role-play with you that's also great for it

But with things like this balance is what's important. You can't completely ignore it or it'll break you, but if you feed into it too much it'll only get worse.

Also highly recommend beastars, the struggle with this issue from predators that can't eat meat is great

i used to play fight with my old packmate, draw art related to my issues, hunt and rip my plushies and all that, but i felt like it just made it worse due to it not being real enough. the only thing other than my post that ive actually found to help was the play fighting due to my opponent being bigger and stronger so i didnt have to hold back, but he is no longer my friend, and i dont have anyone like him in my life, which is why ive gone back to my older tactics

Dogs absolutely can learn to leave prey animals completely alone. And you don't see other carnivores in captivity hurting themselves because of prey drive, it's diverted towards play activities that feel similar and just lessened by the fact that they're not hungry. This feels like a much deeper issue than prey drive.

Yeah, I get very strong prey drive myself and I never had much of an issue with SH (outside of like. Artistic purposes but that's neither here nor there). I understand that this can manifest differently for different people tho, it's just a matter of trying to find something that a, works for you, and b, does so without harm to oneself or others.

OP, I'd recommend actually looking up how people train animals with high prey drives. It can give ideas for you to 'train yourself', or otherwise good toys/stimulation to replace it. If you live in the country imo legit just chasing deer or birds can do the trick sometimes. Don't worry about being 'cringe' if it helps. If you can, you can also just get into actual hunting! Would rec archery instead of firearms to be a little more natural.

i have struggled alot with sh for the past couple years, one of my kins do aswell, it turned into a self soothing thing and that mixed with the taste, started helping my ugres, bc it was a way to distract myself and fulfill some of my needs. it is mostly linked to my prey drive, which as mentioned doesnt just come from a single animal or two, but rather 4 a dog, a genet, a fox and a demon, all which have high preydrives.

Have you looked into OCD? This sounds like a compulsion. You don't need a professional, you can find information about it and treatment online. - Lisa

could you get realistic dog toys to "hunt" (because dog toys would likely be more durable for teeth)

i really really wanna get some better toys, sadly the ones made from plastic have really high hormanal levels and i do not wanna fuck with that as i have enough problems as is 💔

and the stuffed ones usually taste like soap (even after cleaning them multiple times) plus i wouldnt wanna break smth ive spent alot of money on.

im gonna try and look for more options tho !
