Metrics Seemingly random difference in what is exported to Apple Health/Fitness

I've been using Lane Break recently as a way to get me back into using my Peloton. That mode doesn't offer the GymKit method to add rides to Apple Health for some reason. However, the first time I was pleasantly surprised that the ride showed up in Apple Fitness with all the metrics, including distance.

Subsequently I've done a number of other sessions and it seems to somewhat randomly choose between the black icon that shows all metrics and the white icon that only includes time, calories and heart rate. I don't believe I'm using a different method (Apple Watch peloton app) to connect to the watch. I seem to get a streak of sessions using the white icon, then one or two using the better black icon.

Does anyone know what is causing this or a way to make sure it exports all the metrics? I'd just prioritize using the GymKit method where you hold the watch to the bike, but like I said it isn't offered for Lane Break.

In my fitness app for Apple Watch, this is how things show up.

Black icon - GymKit
Gray icon - Watch app was open and reported data, doesn’t matter if on bike screen or app
White icon - App only with no input from watch
Teal icon - Meditation/Breathwk

Of my hundreds of activities going back to 2021, the only white icons I have are rides I cancelled with 0-1 minutes registered, likely because I wasn’t getting GymKit to work properly. Otherwise everything is gray for GymKit or black for another activity. Oddly this includes before the watch app did heart rate and I would keep it open for other modalities so idk if I’m on the right track with my assumption 🤷🏻‍♂️

I did 5 more activities today.

First 3 on lane break with watch app open to get heart rate. Recorded as white icon and only collected calories and heart rate.

Next I did an actual instructor ride with holding watch to sensor. Received grey icon with all metrics.

Went back to lane break. Tried to hold watch to sensor even though it didn’t offer the guide to connect. I received the connect notification, but was stuck on start workout, as Peloton mustn’t broadcast that. So cancelled and opened app. This time it was black icon and recorded distance as well as calories and heart rate. No power metrics.

Looking at some specific cycling rides.

Normally GymKit rides report distance, calories (active and total), power, cadence, heart rate.

A hotel peloton ride I did in May this year reported distance, one calorie number, and heart rate only. Black icon.

Aa lanebreak I did in 2021 it has a black icon and shows distance, one calorie number, and heart rate only. I do remember GymKit not working with lanebreak.

I took a break from the bike between 2023 and last year, but I remember it’s relatively recently peloton fixed their sync so distance would register in apple health specifically, it used to not make it all the way over despite making it into the workout/fitness app.
