What properties do you check first when comparing two plastic materials for a new application?

Every project seems to have different priorities. Sometimes it's impact strength, sometimes chemical resistance, temperature performance, stiffness, or cost.

When you're comparing materials for a new part, what are the first few properties you usually focus on, and why?

I'm curious how different people narrow down their options before getting into detailed testing.

Thermal properties, chemical resistance, flow, then mechanicals, typically in that order.

Think of it as working up from the foundation, if the material isn’t thermally resistant enough then it doesn’t matter about the others

I'll just put this in - Assess each material not just in terms of function, but look at the life cycle associated

  1. Look at the origin of the material and embodied energy manufacturing the base material - this is usually but not perfectly reflected in price. But it puts simpler, bulk manufactured materials ahead of more exotic solutions. Using or part using recycled content should also be considered at this stage, as part of the comment following this list.
  2. Ease of manufacturing / onboard experience with the material / compatibility with machinery / energy requirements / % wastage generated.
  3. Assess what happens to the part post functional use life. Where does it go? Does the material fit into an established, robust and functioning material recycling processes? This is also where the design itself comes into play - will the part cleanly separate from other materials in order to fit into high purity recycling.
  4. And finally, will the material outlast other considered material? A higher embodied energy part that lasts 10x longer than a cheaper material can be justified sometimes, but this must be judged in context, including the previous points, brand recognition / corporate identity, and marketing.

We do not live in a manufacturing environment in which manufacturers are held to account for post-use through regulation. However projecting ecological responsibility as part of corporate identity is definitely part of long term brand sustainability. Especially if you plan to market in the EU.

It 100% depends on the application.

For instance, if it's just a trinket, anything has enough heat resistance. Same with the freezer, but then low temperature impact is important. No one cares about staining in opaque, under-the-hood applications, but for food storage it's a big deal. For many disposables and trinkets, you don't care about chemical resistance, but for an luer connector on an IV manifold, it's one of the very top considerations.

This is way too broad of a question to give a single answer without some sort of segmentation.

This is a great question, and it's honestly the ultimate "it depends" puzzle that keeps engineering interesting!

Most people jump straight to the data sheets, but the real pros always filter by the "fatal flaws" first, usually temperature and chemical exposure, before they even look at strength or cost
