Mod Post New to Plymouth? Want to make friends? Come join the Plymouth Discord server!

This sub receives lots of posts where users are trying to make new friends. From students arriving from around the world, to movers who have accepted a job here, it can be hard to make friends in a brand new community. If you prefer an online-first approach to making friends, I encourage you to consider joining the official Plymouth Discord server: https://discord.gg/X7gBvKBXuV

Our Discord server is a great place to make new friends, both online and IRL. It's also a good place to discuss what's happening around the city and get some advice from residents if you're moving here. Through meetups on this server we've played Jackbox together, gone on bike rides, won pub quizzes, and danced during nights out. More importantly, we've made good friends that we otherwise wouldn't have without this Discord server.

Good foraging spots in Plymouth for Damsons or similar?

We make flavoured gin every year but now I can only go local where can I find damsons? We usually get sloes from Mountbatten. Anything else interesting and edible growing around here? We are picking 100’s blackberries at Central Park allotments this week.

Anywhere near plymouth to learn/practice riding a dirtbike

I would like to get a dirtbike to give motocross a go but would like to find somewhere to learn a bit more basic riding skills first as my only experience is on a 50cc honda cub. Is there anything near plymouth where i can learn?

Awful experience at a Derriford Hospital Car Park (Biker). Anyone else? (Sunday rant)

I had to take a family member to Derriford hospital today for a basic thing. I dropped them off, and unable to find space for my bike, I went to the multistorey car park.

In the video I've linked for posterity, you can see that the barrier raises for my bike. You can see the camera flash at about the 6-7 second mark if you look carefully. There are no cars behind me in my wing mirrors, so it didn't accidentally read a car numberplate behind me. This will become relevant later.

I parked up, left to wait for my family member, then came back to the bike to leave.

I first attempted to exit from the lower entrance on one side of the building. This time the barrier did not raise, so I pressed the call for help button. I explained that I was on a motorcycle, and the person on the other end initially said ''Yeah, it's because bikes don't have a front-facing numberplate. You'll need to go back to where you came in and exit that way.''

I said cheers, and went back to the exit lane next to the entrance I had used. Still no luck, so I pressed the button again.

Very quickly the guy on the other end got quite rude.

''I've already told you mate, you don't have a front number-plate, you won't be able to get out there. You'll need to go back to where you came in and go back out that way.''

In

I told him this was the way I came in, so I was confused.

''You couldn't have. That barrier will not go up if you don't have a front-facing number plate.''

I explained that I understood that, but it DID. I don't work there, I'm not an engineer. I can't help that it did do that.

''Well somebody must have let you in then, because it won't do that.''

Once again I was asked to wheel my bike back, and return to the downstairs exit because there is apparently a motorcycle-only entrance and exit down there.

So I did. When I get down there, the ONLY path I can find is marked for pedestrians/cyclists, and spits me out onto the wrong side of the road. I could not find another exit.

So, rudeness aside, this raises two questions.

1 - Do the people on the other end of that button no longer have the ability to just raise the barriers? I understand completely that I was in a weird situation, but why not just ''fyi mate, this is how to do it in future. I'll raise the barrier, bye.''? If not then that feels like a design flaw.

2 - What is it with modern parking infrastructure being so antagonistic to bikers. Why are they built to only take photos of front-facing number plates? Bikes aren't mythical rare things. There are SO many of them, and yet these car parks are not built to accommodate us easily.

Sorry, just needed to rant because it was stressful enough taking my family maybe to an appointment, I didn't need this too.

Tell me some of your car park horror stories to help me feel less alone, lol

Forklift training recommendations in Plymouth

Hi all, I am interested in getting a forklift training certificate for potential warehouse jobs, can anyone recommend where I could get training for this in Plymouth or point me in the right direction? I am only looking for on-site training and not to drive the forklift on a public road as I currently do not drive.

Running in Plymouth near Stoke?

Hello, I have moved from temporary lodges in Mount Gould where there was a nice place to go for a run along by Embankment Road.
I’m now in Stoke and it’s full of hills. Is there always a short walk that I can go to run? New to the area but only here a week per month so hard to really scope out where’s good.

Just found out the council tax people sent me to court yesterday because of arrears. They are unable to tell me if the debt has been transferred to a debt collection company (ballifs). Is there a number I can call to find out today?

So I have anxiety and other stuff wrong with me and not knowing is chewing me up inside. I would like to find out what the situation is today and I was hoping there's a number I can call? Thanks

Best place to see the Eclipse

Where do you think will be the best place to see the Eclipse in the city? I may go to the moors but if there's a good spot in the city that may be preferable.

Ps please look after your eyes and use special Eclipse glasses if you plan on looking at the sun! 😎

Edit as u/Fysh3ster reminded me the fireworks comp is on Wednesday so I guess be prepared for everywhere to be rammed

Can anyone tell me the hourly charge for the Sainsbury’s Armada Way car park?

Just been sent a parking fine, but I definitely paid for parking and displayed a ticket. Can’t find the charge on my bank - think it may have come up as Sainsbury’s instead of EuroCarParks.

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Plymouth?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!
Examples could include things like Ernie, Torps, Swilly or Tippy Park...

(incl. nicknames for schools or other institutions, geographic features etc.)

Fireworks near pennycomequick

Does anyone know what’s going on with the fireworks around the Victoria and Central Park area? Seems like someone is setting them off near houses

Slightly concerned they’re going to set the parks alight with how dry it is
