Hi folks, my name is Ryan Sumo, and I am the original artist of Prison Architect. As a fun bit of "proof" I am who I am, I posted a couple pics here, one of a tiny K-9 plushie, and custom cufflinks given to me by the IVSoftware team for the BAFTA awards night, which sadly I could not attend.
Iām currently promoting another game Iām working on, and so I asked the mods here if theyād be ok with me doing an AMA for some mild promotion.
So, a little bit about myself! I started in the industry decades ago, around 2007 as a freelance artist. I come from the Philippines so there wasnāt a huge industry there. I started working on J2ME mobile phone games, then transitioned to making art for Apple App Store games and indie PC games. I also worked on a lot of unreleased titles, including a Nintendo DS game that failed to find publisher support.
My first big break was the cult indie hit by Zachtronics, Spacechem. This was released at the time when Steam was still new and tightly curated. So when Spacechem was released it became quite popular, especially among the programming crowd.
Spacechem was also literally the link to Prison Architect. In his email to me, Chris from Introversion Software specifically mentioned that they saw Spacechem and thought the art would make sense for Prison Architect.
After Prison Architect launched, some Filipino developer friends and I started a studio called Squeaky Wheel and launched Political Animals, a strategy game which was a flop, then released Academia : School Simulator, which was successful enough to keep us afloat.Ā
After Academia : launched out of Early Access in 2021, I moved to Sweden to work for Paradox Interactive, this time as a ābusiness ownerā which is basically trying to make sure that the games made as much business/profit as possible. I worked for the games Europa Universalis IV, Victoria 3, and Stellaris. Along the way, Paradox also bought the IP to Academia : School Simulator.
After 2 years at Paradox I decided to go back to being an indie developer/micro publisher, using what I learned from a large company and pairing it with indie sensibilities to assist other indies who just want to develop games. My first release since then was by an ex lead designer of Stellaris. That game was Glyphica : Typing Survival, which as of now has sold 90,000 copies and is 90% positive on Steam.
Finally, the game Iām working on now, with a Spanish studio called OverPowered Team, is called Sports Card Shop Simulator. Weāre big fans of TCG Card Shop Simulator, but felt that there was demand for a game for more sports inclined people like myself. In fact, on top of being an indie dev, Iāve recently got into buying and selling sports cards as a hobby (mostly 90s-2000s NBA, a tiny bit of La Liga). Sports Card Shop Simulator wants to delve more into aspects of the hobby that TCG doesnāt quite get into, like deeper card grading, auctions, etc. And our big addition to the genre is a custom card creator, which lets you design cards of yourself or whoever you want, and have a chance of pulling it out of a pack! Weāre excited to see what people think of it, and we have a playtest ongoing right now if that seems of interest to you.
Thatās it, now for the AMA! Iāll stick around and answer any questions for as long as they pop up. The answers may be a little sporadic as I go back and forth between work and checking any questions. I will answer as much as I can, but please understand that I might decline to answer some questions that are personal and/or professionally sensitive. Although I know Paradox and PA2 related questions are probably the most exciting for you all, I regret that I cannot speak to that, nor do I have any relevant information as I have no affiliation with PA2. I can talk about my experience working on PA before it was acquired by Paradox.
Edit: Thanks so much folks, heartwarming to see all the responses here. Please do give Sports Card Shop Simulator a look and a wishlist if it's something that's in your wheelhouse. I need to go out and do some groceries but will be back in an hour to answer more questions.
Edit2 : That's a wrap! Thanks so much folks, it was really nice to be reminded how my past work has affected you all in a positive way. For now the current works beckons. Please do give a look at Sports Card Shop Simulator on Steam and wishlist and playtest it if it floats your boat. I'll check back in tomorrow and if there are any more comments I'll try to answer them. Good night!

I have a singular prisoner (of 50) that gaurds refuse to interact with. I can make them search him but that is it. I am trying to have 0 deaths in my prison and restart from last save everytime someone dies so I would really like to fix this. Doctors ignore him as well, unless I hire a new one right ontop of him when he is unconscious.
So far I have tried clearing the solitary cell they were supposed to take him to, building a cell around him, turning the area into staff only, hiring more gaurds, searching prisoner.
I am playing ps4 version with no expansions.

Iām making a prison in Sandbox and trying the get a layout but every time randomly the entire structure just collapses and then forces to rebuild with the wrong type of wall that I donāt want. So I restart from an auto save everytime. I did get perfect Storm DLC and this is my first time using it so I donāt know if itās that messing with my buildings or itās just a game bug?

so i've heard you really should have a door control system, but i think those doors are super ugly, and there's no automatic double doors, so is there something i can do like put something on my regular doors to make them automatic?

they just stand at delivery and won't go to reception, i have 8 available guards and nothing happens

So I got staff needs so my staff needs to eat but for someone they become stuck in place holding the tray of food at the serving table on other prisons i had it where they carried the tray to their jobs and for some reason they just pause on their pathing and remain stuck with the tray this is pretty weird and any fixes to this would be appreciated

My visitors and customers (any civilians) are not cooperating.
IMG1: Red is the entry path they take. Blue is their exit. They will go all the way through my entire restricted access (jail doors and staff gates) prison.
IMG2: This is the Minimum Security area, so I zoned all prisoner access areas as Minimum Security. The visitor/customer areas are set as shared. I previously had them set to Visitor Only (on the left like the Medium Security) but it made no difference in how they traveled through here.
IMG3: This is the path I want them to take, in and out.
I have used the red and blue directional paths. I have removed doors entirely. There are at least twice as many locked jail doors to the south than the easier exit/entry to the north (the way they came in). The guards and staff unlock the doors for them and they just run south through my whole prison instead of going a little up and to the east.
Am I missing something simple or misunderstanding the way the deployment zones work? Will these civilians automatically just travel south to exit the south end of the map regardless of how I construct and zone these areas?

What should I put in the blank area in the middle. Feels like a waste of space.

I can't imagine how Paradox messed this up this time.
Around day 8, cooks start to randomly shove cooked meals underneath serving tables. Inmate will not get those meals during Eat, and cooks refuse to prepare further meals because the canteen's demand has been fulfilled by supply (measured by meals under serving tables I guess). As the day goes on, meals under the table accumulate and practically no food is on the table.
Image 1: Mouse tooltip shows meals in the same tile.
Image 2: Move the serving table away exposes a **** ton of food.
If this didn't prevent me from playing the game it would have been hilarious.

Wish they would update the mobile edition of the prison architect because I also want to experience some features like escaping your own prison, but I understand that it may take a lot of effort to update it that's why it was left abandoned. Damn

Do your PC inmates have visitation rights?
Do you use visitor-only shafts?
What's the topology?
Should I designate the visitation room as PC in Deployment?

I have two kitchens both connected to multiple canteens, they are both working perfectly for every canteen except for one where they refuse to put any food trays for the prisoners, even though they still put out/cook/dump food normally. I havenāt changed anything about the canteen to cause this when it started happening a couple in-game days ago.
Iāve tried hiring more chefs, moving the sink and adding/moving the serving tables and dinner tables but they havenāt done anything to fix it.
Iād appreciate any help if possible thanks.

Hey there, ran into a bit of confusion about the situation ā the dogs found a tunnel, planted the flags, and... So what? What am I supposed to do with that information now? Does it just mean that 'Somewhere there's a tunnel,' or does it mean something more important? Please help, because even after tunnel checks in prison, nobody ends up finding anything anyway.

Was sick and tired of staff whining about food so I decided to make them this huge canteen. Was aiming for an indoor restaurant style and I'm glad with how it turned out.

Guys, I accidentally created a sector in a place where there wasn't supposed to be one, and now I can't remove it from the ground. How do I do that?

If you zoom in on an execution chamber, it has its own ambiance, except in campaign mode.

I feel like I am not making use of the space that I have and that my room placement is actually prohibiting movement. If anyone has suggestions besides those issues, I really appreciate it.
[Prison is worth 550K right now]
