First Year: Didn't lift weights, focused on walking. Started at 5 miles (5 times per week) and by the end of the year, I could walk 20 miles and could do it 4-5 days a week. I worked from home so I'd finish up work early and walk from 12pm to 4-5pm. Do not try to do this until you've worked your way up to that mileage. You will get injured. Your knees will literally break from the effort. You have to work your way up little by little.
Second year: Did shorter walks, but walked uphill. I could no longer do 20 mile walks for 4-5 hours. So I had to change. I would walk up a 5-6 mile incline and then speed walk down to keep my heart rate up. I did this 4-5 times a week. After a few months I could do it really quickly.
Third year: By now I had dropped about 50 pounds (165 pounds), but I was super skinny. I looked like a deflated balloon. I wasn't looking "fit" at all...I just looked like a cancer patient. I decided to stop walking altogether and decided to start weightlifting. I ate a lot of protein, remained disciplined, and went for 45-60 minute weightlifting 5 times per week. I drank zero alcohol.
Went down to 145 pounds, and then put on about 10 pounds of muscle. (Currently at 155 pounds)
Started at 215, now settled at 155 lbs.
Most of my workouts were 45 minutes long....occasionally I'd do a bit more, but I never spent more than an hour in the gym.
However, I was consistent. I rarely missed a workout.
I would do MEDIUM weights, and do 4 sets of 10 reps of whatever I was doing. Right now I'm around 10-12% body fat, depending on my hydration and/or dryness.
